Growing cucumbers in a polycarbonate greenhouse - planting and care: my tips, reviews and secrets

HOW IT IS BETTER TO GROW CUCUMBERS IN A POLYCARBONATE GREENHOUSE (Oryol Oblast)
With greens, whatever you say, you always need to keep an eye out: they love that everything is in perfect order. For their sake, some gardeners even master "related" professions - they become plumbers and stokers!
Years of torment
I want to share the experience of growing cucumbers in a lycarbonate greenhouse. And although we are not newcomers in the garden business, but made a lot of mistakes. So, for example, in the first year in our hothouse grew impassable jungle. In the second year our plants fell ill without any apparent cause.

The third refused to bear fruit. And the fourth year has gone to ensure that, taking into account all the previous "vzbryki" cucumbers, establish in the greenhouse "communal economy." And only after that the crops were harvested until the frosts. But first things first.
In the fall, we begin to prepare the greenhouse for the coming spring - we wash the walls with a warm soapy solution. Then we plant compost or humus in the soil, loosen and sow mustard. In winter, in order to provide moisture in the soil, we regularly fill the greenhouse with snow. In the new season, we re-disinfect: light two sulfur blocks, put them in the center on the beds and close the doors for a week (if desired, this can be done in the fall).
Then we well ventilate the greenhouse, sprinkle the beds with ashes, loosen it and cover with black non-woven material, in which staggered holes with a diameter of 30 cm at a distance of 50 cm from each other (Figure 1). This litter warms the soil well, destroys weeds, does not compact the soil, while simultaneously protecting it from pests (photo 1).
To heat the greenhouse we use a metal stove. It works on waste oil, which is poured into a special container (item 1 in photo 2) and ignited. This heats the heat exchanger (item 2 in photo 2), which provides thermal convection of air in the greenhouse. And the temperature is regulated by means of a damper (item 3). Well, the combustion products are led out through the chimney (position 4). It is convenient to use this stove in the fall, if it suddenly turns out to be cold.
Designer Design for Greenhouse Cucumbers
From our own experience, we were convinced that regular, optimal (not excessive and not lean) watering is very important for cucumbers. How to achieve this? Buckets and buckets can only help at the stage of seedlings, and then all this turns into torture for themselves and for plants. Hence, it is necessary to build a system of drip irrigation. How? The simplest way is to buy everything at once in full collection. But, firstly, it is not cheap, and secondly, the proposed designs do not take into account the specific conditions of our landings, which will inevitably lead to alterations. Conclusion: it's better to buy everything in parts and adjust to each other already on the spot. On the family council and decided to do.
First we bought a plastic 200-liter black barrel.
Black - because the water in it not only warms up in the sun much faster, but also does not bloom, and this is such a “smut”!
In addition, complete with the barrel there is a tightly fitting cover, which in this case is simply necessary, otherwise the garbage will necessarily get different debris (especially during flowering of trees), and the irrigation system will clog.
To create the necessary pressure in the barrel we lifted the barrel to 1,5 m above the ground, placing it on a molded cork (Fig. 2). Water comes from the central water pipe through a pipe, inserted into a special neck in the lid. Approximately 10-15 cm from the bottom of the barrel, we drilled a hole in which the fitting of the adapter was mounted, and then assembled a chain of a tap, filter, droppers and trunk ribbons.
In the first year of operation, we laid the pipes on a fabric spread directly on the ground, but then decided to raise them to a height of 10-15 cm. This helped us less often to clean droppers from garbage, and besides, they are always now in sight. The productivity of each dropper is 1 liter per hour. Photo 3 shows how they are installed - next to each plant.
This drip system allowed the cucumbers to be watered directly under the root and only with warm water, while the soil does not swamp or dry out. With such an organization, planting is not sick and delights us with its juicy healthy fruits. In addition, drip irrigation saves our time, and most importantly - strength.

Finally, I note that without a stronger sex, we, women, can not do. For example, I am very grateful to my husband and son for the fact that they managed to do all this.
We grow such fruitful and disease-resistant varieties as Masha, Herman, Paratunka and Courage.

CUCUMBERS IN GREENHOUSE - LANDING AND CARE, TIPS FOR VARIETIES
TELEPHIC CUCUMBERS
For cultivation in a greenhouse, I selected hybrids Masha F1 and German F1. I sow seeds in mid-March in flower pots. I must say that I don’t have lamps for lighting (I can’t afford them, because I’m retired), and the greenhouse is without heating, but despite using only the light and energy of the sun, my seedlings are strong and healthy. This is also facilitated by its mandatory hardening: I take out plants in April on a loggia. By the way, I use the purchased land for seedlings, and I take large enough pots to send seedlings to the greenhouse at the beginning of May and plant them on a permanent place using the transshipment method.
I dig holes in a row of greenhouses in a row, into each of which I throw a little ash, crushed shells, humus and superphosphate and mix. I gently sprinkle the plants and tie them up. And then the sun does its job, and cucumbers grow rapidly.
So that they do not waste their strength in vain, I “blind” them: I cut off the leaves of each and tied to fifth leaves. At this level, I leave a leaf and an ovary, then two sheets and two ovaries, then three sheets and three ovaries, and finally pinch the tops and help the upper lateral shoots grow, which I tie and strengthen.
As a result, by May 10-12 there are already the first cucumbers. Beauty! But the main thing is that as soon as you start tearing them off, the next ones begin to keep pace with one another! The neighbors still go to the store for cucumbers and think about how to arrange the planting, and my husband and I are already crunching with fresh greens! Well and, of course, we treat the same neighbors.
Do not have to doubt
But with the planting of greenbacks in the ground, I never rush. I wait until the late frosts pass, and only then I begin to prepare the land: I make grooves with a chopper, pour humus in them, ash and a little horse peat, and then sprinkle it all. I sow the seeds dry (but before that I spill the beds abundantly with water) and immediately cover them with cut-off five-liter bottles.
I clean these mini-greenhouses when the plants in them become crowded. After that, the husband constructs a special structure over the garden bed (it is very clearly visible in one of the photos), to which I attach a grid over each groove so that the lashes cling to it and rise up.
By the time the ovaries begin to appear, those cucumbers that live in the greenhouse are already on vacation, giving me their main crop, but I still take care of them: I water them regularly, feed them, cut off the yellowed leaves. And the cucumbers in the open beds begin to work, delighting me with the strong and tasty fruits that I put on the workpieces.
By September, foliage begins to turn yellow and on open land. And cold nights do their dirty work with the fruits: they curl, the skin becomes stiff. Here, again, the hothouse residents help me out: although they don’t give too many cucumbers, but without defects, they just delight me and my husband until late fall.
Using this technology, I have been growing greenbacks for four years and have never once doubted the correctness of my experience. Of the varieties of open ground, I prefer the following: Mother-in-law, Zyatek, Parisian gherkin, Nezhinsky.

Tomatoes grow in one row in my greenhouse on the central bed, and at the beginning of the bed I make a warm hole and plant a cucumber (of course, good seedlings): it doesn’t bind to me, but weaves along the ground, I don’t cut off stepsons. And since the tomatoes are tied up, and we pick their leaves, some cucumber stepsons go on the trunks of tomatoes.
I often and well fertilize cucumbers, the crop is excellent until frost. I plant varieties Sibiryak and Zozulya. I cut off huge leaves: there is little sun, and the door rarely opens. Around the roots, the cucumbers are covered with covering material - they are warm. Especially good harvest in the fall, do not turn yellow. I once read this advice of a summer resident a long time ago. Thank you very much!
I put the first cucumber ovary in a 1.5 liter bottle, the cucumber is there and it grows to the required size. Then I cut it off the whip, pour it over the dressing. And at the right moment I put the bottle on the table, closed with a cork. And this delicacy is called “Try, snack!”. Guests have fun, they are intrigued, and I say: "Focus!" You can't get a cucumber from a bottle. But keep in mind that this is north, and in hot areas it can burn in a bottle.

I'll tell you how I mastered and comprehended the truths of a good harvest of cucumbers, tomatoes, aubergines in a polycarbonate greenhouse. This is our greenhouse for the third year, but I still get lessons on growing vegetables in it.
This year everything grew in the greenhouse normally, and when the fruits began, the tomato foliage covered with dark spots. Then I look, and cucumbers in the same greenhouse are covered with white spots. At first they were small, but soon grew and dried up. In order not to waste time in vain, she took a leaf through the filing of "Dacha" and rushed to treat. Applied everything: and sprinkling with serum, and kefir with greenery. Under the root watered with the following solution: 10 tablets metronidazole for 10 l of warm water. Every week I worked on my plantings. Thank God, I let the illness go! I was pleased with the harvest, and I was doing work on mistakes.
I came to the conclusion that it is impossible to plant tomatoes and cucumbers in one greenhouse, although many summer residents are sure of the opposite. My tomatoes fell ill because there was no through ventilation in the greenhouse, only one door was open and a nearby ventilator. When I saw that my tomatoes were stained, I decided to open the second door, which is opposite to the first one. After a while my cucumbers lowered their sluggish leaves, and after a while they became covered with white spots. Oh, and I namayalas with them!
It is still necessary to observe a crop rotation. It is impossible to plant tomatoes again after tomatoes. Apparently, this is one of the reasons for my failures. I want to advise the villagers not to repeat their mistakes ..
