GROWING OF THE UNDERSTANDING UNDER COVERING MATERIAL AND ON THE APPROPRIATE BURNS - MY REVIEWS
This article is another reminder that there is no bad weather for a real and hardworking gardener. And if you really get it, our reader will fight it.
Cabbage - Rainy Summer Leader
When a misfortune befalls me, the husband comforts: "Nothing, nothing, but now there is an experience." I prefer to learn from the mistakes of others and enjoy the experience of seasoned summer gardeners. And our large army of truck farmers has enough experience. Low bow to you and for your work on the earth, dear friends, and for the epistolary work, which is not given to authors at an age is easier than the struggle for harvest!
So I will talk about my battle.
Yes, this summer turned out to be wet and cool. Heat-loving vegetables were not very fun even on warm beds under a non-woven shelter. Cabbage was the best in these conditions. I landed this year white-fronted Flash, June, Glory, red-red Jewel F1, as well as broccoli Green Magic F1. All varieties, except mid-season Glory, are early ripe. I refused the late varieties due to the lack of space for its storage in our small ps'reb. And we eat the early varieties during the summer (we use glory for salting). In general, for insidious weather conditions, early ripe varieties are what you need.

The seedlings were grown by themselves. June and Slava planted in autumn in plastic boxes filled with nutrient soil (vegetable garden plus humus with the addition of ash), and installed them in the floor and carbonate greenhouse directly on the beds. Several times during the winter my husband threw snow on them.
The other varieties were sown in early April in purchased soil (in a city apartment) and immediately after emergence she brought out buckets with seedlings on a glazed but not insulated loggia, due to which the plants were hardened and did not stretch out. For comparison, I want to say that the germination rate of autumn crops was approximately 50%, and spring - 100%, but greenhouse seedlings subsequently outperformed home growth.
All the sprouts landed in the open ground in mid-May on an upraised bed. About her want to say specifically. Two years ago, my husband took the bedding out of the chicken coop. Last year, I planted potatoes here, and after harvesting it in August, I planted rye. In the spring, my husband mowed all this greens, plowed our heavy loam and made a bed. Since it was already well-fertilized, then when planting cabbage, I added humus and ash only in the holes. Watering them well, planted the plants directly in the mud.
Cabbage under cover
The only thing I did not take into account was the scale of weather anomalies. And who could have foreseen this at all? Knowing what awaits us, I would put arcs and cover the landing with non-woven material.
For the sake of justice I note that, despite several hailstones, the cabbage still diligently grew. True, with numerous cold snaps, she froze, but only a little warmer, she immediately began to grow.
About three years ago I sowed a ripe cabbage. Explosion. I planted it for several years already and very much liked our family. Seedling was still small, but not to delay with planting, I landed it in the open ground (actually it was more like a pick). My husband went on a business trip that day and, passing by the fields, saw something strange: people spread huge white sheets on the ground.
Parked the car, he was not too lazy to go down and find out what was actually happening there. It turned out that the workers were covering the planting with cabbage. Returning home, he immediately shared with me what I saw.
And we did the same with our cabbage beds, using the thinnest covering material. After removing the shelter in two weeks, we saw a strong seedling grown up to 25-30!
The lady of cabbage, in addition to well-fertilized land and abundant watering, which is abundant this year, loves sunny places, I had a sad experience: I planted 12 roots of cauliflower between two cherries, naively believing that she would like penumbra. Greens were born noble, and the heads were not fastened for a long time.
Only by the end of the summer there were only three pieces the size of a fist. Now I take away this capricious only open places.
But back to the cabbage planted this summer. I sprouted the grown seedlings, combining this with hilling to the first leaves with damp earth, and mulched the dried mown rye. Fertilized twice: the first time with fermented grass with the addition of ash (a day before watering), the second with chicken droppings. For prophylaxis against voracious insects, I sprayed it with the infusion of garlic shooters, but once I dragged it on with this matter, and the cabbage plants immediately attacked the plantings.
The neighbor advised to treat them with kerosene (100 g for 10 L of water). To make it dissolve better, the water took a warm one. After stirring the solution well, she poured it into a watering can with a spray and poured cabbage on the leaves. This tool helped to get rid of the pest, but burned some leaves, so now I will reduce the concentration.
Cabbage travels all over our garden, moving every year to a new place. I try to plant after nightshade, but if there is no such possibility, then after garlic, combining with planting beets. In the neighborhood, both cultures feel great! And at the edges of the garden I plant marigolds and calendula - both benefit and beauty. This year was no exception: they again bloom next to the cabbage.
