In the market I saw beautiful red onions, flattened from above and below. The seller said that this is a Crimean bow. I have not seen a set of this onion for sale. Is it possible to somehow get the seeds on your own, for example, by planting a bulb and waiting for the arrow?

      - The Crimean onion breeds in the same way as any other. In the spring, plant the bulb in the soil - it will give feathers and arrows, on which peduncles and seeds are then formed. When they dry, collect and store them. And next spring, sow in the ground. As a result, you will get the so-called sevoc. And after further planting, already grow your own Crimean onion on the site.

By the way, in some cases, a full-fledged bulb is formed already in the year of sowing the seeds, but in cold regions it will definitely not be the same size as in the Crimea, and will be sharper. Do not forget that this southern onion and not in every region will form ripened seeds. If your summer is cold and short, then, with a high degree of probability, the seeds will not be viable.

We have been planting red onions for many years. But it is affected by powdery mildew. Last summer, the pen suddenly turned white all at once, literally in a day, covered with powdery mildew. The feather lay down, the bulbs did not grow, they remained small. Near the forest, where a lot of wild lupine grows. When it blooms, it is covered with a white bloom. I assume that disputes fly from him. Maybe it would be worth mowing it, but I don’t have the strength and opportunities for this. How can you spray onions from powdery mildew - when and how?

Dear Lydia Nikolaevna! Downy mildew, or onion peronosporosis, is a fungal disease that affects plantings of this vegetable in almost the entire territory of Russia. The spores of this fungus are always present in the air, regardless of whether there are nearby affected herbs. And onions usually get sick if they are overfed with mineral water or manure with excess nitrogen. I used to successfully use a preparation based on mandipropamide, (according to the instructions) - there are many names on sale, but now I just try not to overfeed the onions. I bring in only old compost and every week I spray the feathers with whey, diluted 5-10 times.

I really wanted to breed Yalta, but I could not find seeds anywhere. Last fall I saw it in a grocery store and bought two heads - I put one in storage until spring, the other I buried in the garden bed and insulated well.

And in the winter I again saw such an onion on sale, but with sprouts. I bought a couple of onions again, but now I planted both in pots and put them on the cold window. By spring, the feathers had reached a length of 40-50 cm, so they had to put up supports. In such a "violent" form, I planted them on the garden bed. So what? They fired arrows and changed their minds to bloom. I hope, however, that I will come to an agreement with the Yalta onion and he will give me his seeds.

In short, there are many plans. I'm afraid that even if I live a hundred years, I won't have time to complete everything.
