ALL THE TRUTH ABOUT ROCHAMPLE
Anyone who is going to make friends with this culture, should know that its value is measured not by kilograms of harvested crop.
ROCKAMBOL AND Tricky Scales ...
I've come across the fact that many truck farmers who are going to grow this culture have a bit of a misconception about it. For example, they think that its main advantage lies in the large size and weight of the heads. They are really big enough for a rockabilly, but their mass depends on the cover scales, which grow so juicy that after drying the garlic becomes easier by about 30%. Therefore, due to its succulence, the rockabilly requires a half or two months to dry completely. How to determine that it is completely dry? And for the same covering scales: they become very thin, airy and easily slouched. With further storage, the heads are even more lost in weight and by spring they are already quite light.
Here it is appropriate to ask the question: how much rockambole then generally lies? It is stored for eight months without any damage, and then it begins to dry out abruptly. For clarity, I’ll explain: if I usually harvest crops in late June - early July, then the shelf life is until the end of February, although individual heads can last until mid-March.
This should be taken into account if you are going to book planting material from the southern regions in winter. You can send it in April, and then, most likely, it will be dried bulbs, which in this condition are not viable. You do not have to rely on good rocambol planting material and when you are promised to send it in the middle of summer.
Buy it in the fall - this is a XNUMX% guarantee of obtaining high-quality garlic. And more precisely, the most ideal month for such a purchase is September. Well, how to get hold of the goods, immediately and start landing, do not pull. What for? And then, that when you grow your rock-ball next year (which by that time is adapting in your climate), its harvesting period will “automatically” be postponed for a couple of months and, accordingly, the planting material you personally collected can last until May. And then please - plant in the same month, and harvest in September. In general, you have the opportunity to "play" with the timing of planting, cleaning.
But what surely cannot be doubted is the cold resistance of the rock-ball. He is more afraid of stagnation of water than frost. Well-rooted heads are not afraid, even if the temperature drops to -30 °. Moreover, once in the winter, -37 ° happened to us, and nothing, normally then the garlic grew. By the way, if, due to the warm autumn, the rocambole suddenly begins to sprout, it’s also okay - then this will not affect the crop in any way.

... AND THE NAKED ROCKAMBOLES OF THE CHILD
Especially I want to draw attention to the fact that a huge rockambol grows only from large or medium single. Therefore, a very large amount of planting material will leave to disembark even one row. Because of its size, it is necessary to wag a fairly shovel to dig a deep trench. I'm even thinking about a motoblock for this business to buy.
By the way, what is the depth of the rockabilly planting? This is a general rule: it is equal to the height of the teeth, multiplied by two. But this is in theory. In practice, taking into account the fact that the embedding is measured from the shoots on the teeth, and plus the ground still settles, the total depth is equal to the height of the teeth, multiplied already by 4. Which corresponds to half the bayonet bayonet or even a little more.
And in general rocambol is better to fill in excess, than to muzzle. Although, of course, small teeth and babies do not need to be deeply covered.
But the children of rockambol are best planted in the spring, and the earlier, the better, although they have a strong double scales, and they can be stored in a dry cool place for two years, without losing their viability and vitality.
The main thing here is not to confuse the planting material, since two-year-old children are no different in appearance or quality from those collected last year. Before planting, I soak them for a day in water and then carefully remove the softened first layer of scales with a knife and then immediately plant them in open ground. If someone distracts me from planting or something, I wrap such “naked” children in a damp cloth.
Now about when to harvest. Of course, ideally, when the tops are yellow, which is a sign of full ripeness. But if there are continuous rains, I dig up an immature rockabilly. I spread it in the shadow into one layer and hold 2-3 weeks there. During this time, the leaves and roots dry out, and the heads mature and remain very juicy. After that, I braid them in braids and hang them in a well-ventilated shed.
But the odnokubok dried buckyls easily open at the bases, so they can not be braided in a braid. There is a way out: I lay them out for drying in one layer in wooden boxes and three or four times a week I always turn over that they have not braced their sides. By September all the dried single-handed ones are already gathered in large boxes.
I place a lot of rockabilly, because it is delicious. Only you need to consider that the taste of it varies with the growth: the young heads remain tender until the heat comes (I start using them already in March), and then they begin to ripen and acquire a specific taste, which not everyone likes. Therefore, a ripe rocambol, as a rule, rarely used in fresh form.

I put it in salads with a marinade (where there is a bow in the recipe, it can be replaced by a ripe rocambole), pickles, ajiku and ketchup. You can marinate it and separately. A fresh rocambol is good in soups, in borsch and in pilaf. And it makes cutlets especially tasty and aromatic, perfectly combining with any kind of meat.
