Pepper cultivation - planting and care (Vladivostok)
HOW TO GROW PEPPER IN THE PRIMORSK REGION - MY ADVICE AND CARE TESTIMONIALS
Sometimes things happen in nature that do not fit into the scientific canons. Our regular author just describes one such fact, which is difficult to explain from the point of view of agricultural technology. And there is still a lot of valuable information in this letter - not only garden, but also "market".
Thank you for publishing my article about tomatoes ("There are bad weather for nature"), and today I wanted to talk about peppers. For a long time there has been a polemic on the issue, how to plant sweet and bitter peppers, but I got this way.
In our family, I am the lover of sweet pepper. The husband can so, for the sake of respect, take a slice or two from a salad, and I love with great pleasure to "crackle" with pepper instead of an apple: and the taste is excellent, and the benefit is great. Juicy and fleshy pulp I use in various forms as an additive to salads, carcass and stuffed with vegetables or meat, and can still be preserved and salted. Pepper is a deposit of sugars, vitamins C, A, B1, AT2, mineral salts, calcium, potassium, iron. Of course, the content of utilities depends on the variety and climatic conditions: in rainy and cold weather, they are slightly less than in warm and dry conditions.
Deciding last year to plant pepper, I reacted to growing seedlings seriously. I selected from the purchased packages only the largest, full-bodied seeds, for fidelity, dissolved a strong solution of salt in a glass of warm water and covered them there for five minutes. Those that fell to the bottom, carefully washed, the rest, alas, had to be thrown away. Then, for 20 minutes, she dropped the seeds into a strong solution of potassium permanganate, washed again, and finally was soaked for 24 hours in a nutrient solution with a temperature of 25-28 °.
You can make the solution yourself - for 1 liter of water 1 tsp. ash, or use liquid potassium humate, and there are also special ready-made solutions for this purpose. I read that such treatment contributes to the rapid and friendly germination of seeds, accelerated ripening and increased yield. I bought the soil mixture ready for peppers, slept in 400-gram cups, moistened with warm water and sowed two seeds each. She put 2 cm of soil on top. She set the glasses in a pallet, put them on a loggia, where it was warmer, and made sure that the earth did not dry out, sprinkling a little water.
And really, in five days my seedlings amicably appeared from the ground. So they do not stretch too much, moved them for seven days to the floor, where the air temperature is lower. During this time they managed to build up good roots, and you could bring them closer to a warm place.
At first, peppers do not grow very actively, so do not overdo it with watering. I pour water into the pallet, necessarily warm (up to 28 °), and in the phase of two leaflets I feed the solution of calcium nitrate (1 liters per 10 L of water). If the seedlings were sown in small pots or boxes, then in the phase of two real leaves it can be dived, but I'm lazy and do not swoop: well, peppers do not like this procedure! They can stop growing at 1-2 a week, so as I grow, I simply fill the soil with cotyledon leaves.

Pour boiling water in a three-liter jar into a glass of used tea leaves, close the lid and leave for 5-6 days, then strain and water. If the peppers are weak, dilute 10 tbsp. In 1 l of water. l superphosphate and 1 tsp. potassium sulfate. You can add wood ash at the rate of 1 tsp. on three pots, only carefully - do not get on seedlings!

PLACING THE PEPPER
By the time of the landing, the pepper was growing according to 8-12 leaves, 25 rose in March, and I planted it on 12 in advance.
Try not to plant pepper after potatoes, tomatoes, fizalis and even tobacco!
I regulate the seedbed with peat, sand, humus, sawdust, and also add a glass of ash per square meter, according to 1 art. l. superphosphate and potassium sulphate and 1 tsp. urea. But it is better to refuse from manure, as peppers in return will give a strong leaf mass, and there will be no more forces to form fruit.
Since I plant peppers in paired bushes, I make more distances - 60-80 cm from each other. When planting, I do not rush, because the leaves and shoots are very fragile. Gently shake the plant, turning the glass upside down. I hold the stem with my second hand and lower the sprout into the hole, then I fill it with soil and only after that I water it and immediately put on top my favorite “mini-greenhouses” made of 10-liter cut-off bottles without a bottom.
All letters on this subject are either sweet pepper (Bulgarian) or burning. But there is a wonderful hot pepper variety - cayenne. To list all its advantages, there will not be enough two pages. It is extremely useful for the heart, vessels, gastrointestinal tract, spine, joints, is widely used as a prevention of cancer. It is the best of all natural fat burners. In the middle zone it is grown in a greenhouse.
Now you can not disturb the plants for a week, there is plenty of space for them under the greenhouse bottles. If it’s hot, I remove the corks, and so that the southern sun does not burn the leaves from the inside, I advise you to brush with lime and water-based paint with a brush - this experience came after the leaves facing the south side turned white.
Peppers grew surprisingly strong, I didn’t put any support for them, I was pleased with the harvest - I had enough of it myself and shared it.
OPTIMETABLE TASTING
You probably ask, what does the talk about sweet and bitter pepper? I'll explain now. I planted the peppers and found that the bed is long, you could make a couple more holes. I asked the neighbors, but I didn’t find any extra peppers, so I decided to buy it at the bazaar, since every time we pass by when we go to the cottage. And so she did: she found seedlings more beautiful, stocky, with dark foliage and strong roots. I asked for four pieces, and the hostess said: “I have everything arranged in ten, you want - take it, do not want it - no.”
Okay, I decided not to argue, took the “bundle” and went to plant. Arriving at the cottage, I immediately put them in the root stimulant for half an hour, and I myself think where to put the extra ones - the site is small, everything is planned out.
Then the husband prompted: "Sun," he says, "into the greenhouse, still empty." Well done, it’s said - done. In the purchased “bundle” there were not even 10, but 12 roots. Four, those that are better, planted in their own in the garden, and the rest in the greenhouse.
Yes, I almost forgot. When I bought, the seller said that in the "bundle" six red peppers and four yellow. In appearance, all one in one, but I still put the "yellow" on one garden, and the "red" on the other. When the growth began, I noticed that on the "yellow" seedlings the leaf is darker, and on the "red" a little lighter. Well, I take care, I'm happy, the peppers are growing higher every week, I almost reached the roof of the greenhouse, I had to pull the ropes, and when the fruits began to be tied up, they needed a backup for the branches.
But here's the thing. The "yellow" for some reason did not grow in thickness but in length, reaching 20-25 cm, and were of an alarming dark green color. I waited, waited for when they turn yellow, and in the end I decided to try: maybe in the stage of technical ripeness they have already gained enough sweetness? And I tried it on my own head ...
I did not have time to bite, as if my mouth had been burned from the inside, the bitterness was simply terrible! Long rinsed with water, but it helped a little.
Now I understand the secret of the bazaar traders: to be able to sell the goods to customers, which no one takes.

Well, the plants are not to blame, decided not to throw them away, but simply to find a fan of hot pepper. On the second bed, ordinary peppers, fairly small and thin-walled, were fastened, I decided not to try them at once: I thought, since the first such "evil", then do not expect anything good, because the bushes lay on each other, which means that there was a perforation. But no, everything was in order: usual sweet peppers, not large, but many, and fructified until the very frosts. "Bitter" bush, too, was hung with fruits that looked like saber curves, but I did not tear them to the cold, and then I found lovers and with pleasure gave a huge package.
Why, living in one greenhouse and touching each other, the peppers were not perepylyalis, I can not say for sure, but the fact, as they say, is obvious.
It is a pity that the photo, no matter how I tried, does not convey how much bitter happiness we have rolled over. The upper branch even broke - could not stand it.
