METHOD OF GROWING GARLIC (Ural)
What just do not get up with the planting material of this culture to get a good harvest! But summer residents go for even greater tricks in order to preserve the collected trophies without loss. Garlic, of course, endures all this generously - it has such a character, but in reality it favors only those who do not torment it in vain.
I’ve been reading our magazine for the fourth year, and I still can’t come to terms with the fact that he didn’t catch my eye before! After all, I’ve been doing summer cottage since 1989. At first, they worked on the site as a family — mom, me and sister and husband. Then my sister bought myself another cottage, and my mother and I stayed.
Time passes, and now I am engaged in land alone ...
I want to contribute to the development of gardening and tell about our family method of growing garlic.
So, I prepare the bed for planting winter garlic in spring. At the beginning of the season I sow peas on it, wait for it to ripen, then remove all shovels-pods, but do not touch the tops: I leave it on the garden bed, crush it and even lightly tread on it several times. The beds in my garden, by the way, are all stationary, reinforced with boards, so I’m not afraid that the earth will go under your feet and fill up the aisles.
On top of the “pacified” pea tops, I lay out the chopped calendula, which grows in abundance in my garden (I plant specially somewhere, but for the most part it propagates by itself), and water it abundantly, depending on the rains - 2-3 times in Week. While I drive with peas and a garden, you look, autumn is already in the yard. Two weeks before planting, pour a layer of compost about 10 cm thick on this grass cake and leave it to lie just like that, without closing. Everything - the bed is ready. And, looking ahead, I’ll say that garlic is very much liked by such an organic perink, which is why it grows without being capricious.
On the day of planting, I make grooves on the bed every 20-25 cm, sprinkle them with a little salt (the amount is approximately the same as for salting the soup), then dust with ash and plant garlic. And in the spring it rises evenly - at 100%! I never feed him anything, only after I break out the arrows, sprinkle plenty of ash in the garden.
I believe that the most important condition for the formation of large heads (this also applies to onions) is loosening. I do it once a week at least.
I water the garlic only until the shooters appear, and after it has been broken, and only in the absence of rain, once every 10 days. Garlic always grows in me large, beautiful, dark lilac. The taste is spicy, and also fragrant.
But back to the watering: I indicated the amount of water that garlic needs on loam. But my sister and her husband in the garden soil sandy sand, so they are more often watered, do it almost until the harvest.
In the past year, it rained almost every day, the water even stood in between, leaving very slowly due to heavy land. Garlic from such an abundance of moisture grew smaller than usual. And my sister’s is large, luxurious, the size of a woman’s fist, although we have the same variety.
So draw your own conclusions.

As soon as garlic is not washed over!
They keep it in salt, in beet marinade, and in protein solution (by the way, this is very expensive and troublesome), burn the roots of it, leave the stems long and dry in the sun. Nightmare! But in fact, garlic can lie without all these troubles, which only contribute to its damage. The main thing here is not to harm.
In no case should you dry the heads on the ground in the sun, because they will overheat and will not be stored for a long time - this is the first. Secondly, if you still peel dry garlic (and onions, by the way, too), then the lower, still unripe shells will not be able to protect it from moisture and temperature extremes.
But cutting off the wet roots and stems (still very juicy, because they just grew and pulled moisture out of the ground), you open a wide gate for an infection that immediately goes into wet heads.
I used to hurry to cultivate freshly dug garlic and onions, I dried them in the sun on the advice of “experienced” gardeners.
And already in March I was forced to buy garlic (and onions - in general since the fall), since the crop of our own production quickly decayed. The purchased onion was well stored, but it was clearly something heavily processed. Somehow I planted him in February on the greenery on the windowsill, so he did not even release a feather! Once I bought for divorce from one summer resident three large bulbs of brown color.
Planted in the fall, but they never rose later. I dug them up - the heads are fresh, even the primordia of growth are not visible on the cuts. And this is after a year of being in the ground! Apparently, here, chemistry was not without. Then I decided to learn not only to grow, but also to keep my onions and garlic until a new crop, all the more so since the prices for vegetables have become just cosmic.
Now I can boast: I learned it all the same.
What's the secret? I answer: late cleaning from the garden. Only when almost all leaves turn yellow. And no drying in the sun! I immediately take the crop to the shelter and keep the garlic there for two weeks, and onions - and all three. After that, I weave into braids and hang on the poles until completely dry. Almost until the frosts my trophies hang. And only then I begin to peel and prune the stems and roots, while separating the best onion and garlic heads for planting.
By the way, the onion heads for Chernushka also began to be planted in the fall and get an abundance of seeds. I repeat: the whole secret of late harvesting, late cleaning and pruning of finally dried stems and roots, only then the bulbs are inaccessible for infection!
Keep in a cool dry place. The basement is not good: it is always wet.
