Planting potatoes twice per season (Udmurtia)
TWICE YOUNG TATER
It turns out that double harvest of second bread is not at all difficult! One can only wonder why most gardeners are satisfied with one thing.
I was fascinated by the garden when I was still at school, I was the best student in biology. I corresponded with the director of the school of young naturalists, she even gave me a free ticket to a pioneer camp. But we will talk about potatoes. Suddenly, someone wants plant potatoes according to my method - twice a season? Yes, eat in June and in September young.
So.
In winter, I take a liter bag of milk or kefir, rinse with warm water and wipe it dry. So I cook about 20 packets. In the last week of March, I sprout 20-25 potato tubers (sprouts of about 1,2 cm each), then on April 1 I prepare the land - ordinary, garden, adding a little bought.
I pour a glass of earth into each bag. Then, gently, without damaging the sprouts, I put the potatoes and cover them with another glass of soil. I put the bags one after another in a vegetable plastic box, pour them into each glass of water - and that’s all.
I live in the city, so I put the box in the glazed loggia. In April, I’m not closing it, only sometimes covering it for the night, if a frost suddenly hits. Packages do not close, leave open. As required, I water once a week.
1 May we always go to the country and take with us this box of potatoes. We plant there where the land has already dried up (the garden is in our lowland). Dig a bed on 20 holes, then put a handful of manure into each well. We break the package, and there is already a whole bunch of roots! And sprouts about 30 cm long, i.e. This is already tops. Immediately spud, leaving only the top.
Sometimes frosts occur that can grab greens, but potatoes always grow well — we never harbor them. Although you can cover it with a non-woven fabric, from next year I will do so. After two weeks, we wind up again and feed with a solution of manure. When the potatoes bloom, you can dig 3-4 bushes, boil in their uniforms and serve with a herring. We have a little more tubers of chicken eggs, but there are also very large ones. Grandchildren always demand potatoes with herring for lunch, and we have five of them.
In June, we eat this potato, and then plant it a second time at the same place. Now it is warm, it grows very quickly. And in September we are with young potatoes again!

I want to share how I am relatively cheap (and early!) growing young potatoes.
We have a small garden near the house, enough only for the most necessary vegetables. Well, there are also pears, apple trees, peaches, cherries, cherries, apricots, plums, currants, raspberries, many flowers and 16 grape varieties on the trellis. Therefore, we do not plant potatoes, nowhere. But I want a young potato! So, for the winter we buy 4-5 nets of potatoes, we usually take, as the sellers say, Bellarozu - it is large, pink, and its sprouts are only at the top.
And here I am, when I cook, cut these shoots with pulp with a layer of 2-3 cm, take a shallow plastic box, cover it with a film so as not to leak, and pour a layer of moistened sawdust (5-6 cm).
I put these cut pieces, powdered with ash, directly on the sawdust (closer to each other) and sprinkle it on top with the same wet sawdust. Having finished the first layer, I lay the second and put the box in the corridor or on a warm veranda, even in the kitchen - in general, where there is a place.
I start these procedures immediately after the New Year, in two months the shoots are pulled out on 4-5, or even on 6-8, see
and acquire a rich root system. And already at the beginning of March, when the earth warms up, I take out the boxes outside for two days so that the sprouts get used to the sun. On the dug up beds I make a hoe with a groove deep on the bayonet of a shovel, every 60-70 cm I put a handful of onion husks and ash, and I spread my fluffy lumps on them. Between them - two grains of corn. Again, I make a second furrow with a hoe, from which I carefully grab the ground from the first, as if hilling the stolons of fluffy lumps with leaves. Then I also plant a third furrow, put small arcs and cover with any covering material from return frosts.
A week later, the potatoes start to grow together, in April it blooms, and in May we are already digging up new potatoes! It’s undermining - we select large, then water, and small grows further.
