Growing Beijing Cabbage - Planting and Care
It is only necessary to give half of the potato area at the site to different useful crops (Chinese cabbage, for example, or artichoke), as 50% of our gardeners will immediately become slim, shedding excess weight. Joke?
I read each new issue carefully from cover to cover, but at times I return to the binder over the years. And at the next re-reading, he drew attention to the fact that summer residents do not pay enough attention to Beijing cabbage. In my opinion - unforgivably small.
I grow Peking differently than other readers who occasionally write about it. He began, like many, from the early spring plantings, received good results - large, juicy heads of cabbage. But! An unexpected problem arose: all the salads and early white cabbage, which ripened at the same time as her, were seriously competing with this early Peking on our dining table. It turned out some overproduction. Yes, Beijing can be used in the first and second courses, but we mainly use it in salads - vitamins!
That's when I switched to the cultivation of Beijing cabbage in the second half of summer, making a reserve not only for autumn, but also for winter. In 2017, I specially recorded the dates of the main stages of growing Peking, in order to see how fast it grows. For planting, I chose hybrids Nico F and Bilko F. Why two species, not one? And just in case. Suddenly, some seeds will sprout badly - others will save. And two hybrids will rise - also good.

He planted 21 seeds in June in a hotbed that was freed from white cabbage. Of course, I pre-weathered it, watered it well, burnt it with a rake, leveled the ground surface. Additional fertilizers are not made, since the land in the hotbed is well fertilized with humus since the fall. Seeds before planting soaked in a solution of growth regulator according to the instructions.
Before landing, I dried them, but not so much that they just did not cake. Planted to a depth of 1-1,5 cm. Between rows of 15 cm, and in a row of one seed every 5-6 cm. The nursery after planting covered with a spanbond. Every day I looked in - checked how the landing behaved. Already on the fourth day (after all, it’s June, it’s warm outside both day and night), the Beijing woman came up amicably, and I immediately removed the spunbond from the nursery, and lightly dusted the seedlings with ash.
LANDING OF PACKING CABBAGE
Under Peking cabbage, I cooked a high bed (photo 1). Since before that I had taken a crop of radishes from it, I additionally added half a bucket of humus and a glass of ash per square meter. Ground strayed to a depth of 8-10 cm and leveled with a rake. By July 13 seedlings grew up, and I planted it in two rows. Between the rows of 40 cm, in the row between 25 plants, see
I’ll note right away that this is somewhat less common than what is written in the literature, but I like this landing more - it’s verified by experience.
The day before planting, I poured a lot of water from a watering can and, after planting, I poured 0,5 l of water under each root. I know that many gardeners much more watered cabbage when planting. I am not a supporter of abundant watering: the ground should be moderately wet, then the root system is most actively developing both inland and in breadth in search of moisture. And it gets enough oxygen.
Planting lightly powdered the leaves with ash (from all kinds of midges and flea beetles), put the arc and covered with spanbond. After a week, it became clear that 100% landings successfully settled down! And then I fed the peking with a solution of green fertilizer with the addition of 1 Art. l urea on xnumx l water. Infused under each root by 10 l solution.
On hot days, he lifted the spanbond, leaving it only on the sunny side and thus creating a shadow for the cabbage. He carried out one additional dressing with a solution of fermented mullein on August 3 - also 0,5 l each, and did not give more fertilizing.
BEIJING CABBAGE - CARE
A week later, he removed spanbond from the garden, and treated Beijing with an infusion of tomato tops and tobacco dust: half a bucket of tomato tops insisted in 5 liters of water, and 5 glass of tobacco dust in the other 1 liters of water. He insisted both solutions for three days, then filtered them and mixed them immediately before treatment. Sprayed with a spray gun.
The whole season was watered moderately, under the root, and only when the ground dried out. It was obvious that powerful leaves were growing on the peking, and then a nice heart formed. 1 of October, two weeks before harvesting, I tied the cabbages of Chinese cabbage with a string with string, so that the ripe cabbage would have dense, compact cabbages.
The binding process is simple. First, I cut the twine into pieces of the required length, then with two hands on one head I take all the leaves from below and, pressing them to the head, I lift up. The next stage: I tie the head in the middle with a string tightly, but so that it does not cut the outer leaves. With the second piece of twine I tie in the same way the upper part of the head (photo 1).
Moderately warm autumn weather allows you to form strong, dense and juicy heads of cabbage (photo 2). From 15 to October 20, I harvest the crop for storage. From each head I remove the uppermost leaves, which begin to dry and turn yellow.
I drop cabins one by one down into small packages in such a way that the top protrudes from the 5 package and is not closed: this way the head receives a kind of ventilation. I pack each bag on top of a thin rubber band. I always keep the whole peking on the shelves in the basement, and before using the 2-3 I bring a caban home and put it in the fridge. It is stored in this form well. My stockpiles of peking end in April-May.
Wife cooks out Chinese cabbage many different dishes. Let me give you a recipe for one of the most simple salads, which the spouse called the "Schoolgirl". It takes all the components in arbitrary ratios. Cob cut across the short strips of width 1-1,5 cm, cut into thin "rings" and greens leek.
Crushes a pair of boiled eggs, adds 1-2 Art. l marinated corn, salt, pepper and dressing sauce. Its composition: 5 pieces of sour cream mixed with 1 part of Russian mustard. Mixed salad sprinkles with 2-3 Art. l crispy crackers to beer. Preparing a salad is very simple, very quickly and it turns out very tasty. I advise everyone to try!
