In the 20th century, viable hybrids of the “Russian plum” were obtained in the Nikitsky Botanical Gardens by artificial pollination of cherry plums and Chinese plums. Morphologically, only a specialist can distinguish them from cherry plum.
These hybrids are better adapted to harsh conditions, suitable for cultivation in the central zone of Russia, fruitful and large-fruited, with good taste of pulp. It is noteworthy that all the varieties recommended for cultivation in the Moscow region are Russian plum varieties. In Russia, they are not shared with varieties of cherry plum, all together called simply cherry plum.
In the Central Region, 5 varieties of cherry plum are included in the State Register. All are varieties of universal purpose. The highest degustation grade for F (5 points) is for the Golden Scythian variety *. Then the experiment took an even more interesting turn.
Russian plum crossed with the best varieties of apricot and got outstanding hybrids, which are called by plumes. They also tolerate low temperatures well, but produce stable yields and set fruits slightly less in weight than in cherry plums, but comparable in weight to apricots. They are short, so they are suitable even for a small garden. And - they are well grafted, which cannot be said about many high-yielding cherry plums, Russian plums and apricots.
By the way, spontaneous hybrids obtained from species of cherry plum and apricot are called black apricots. Breeders also conjured with them. And now sweet and large-fruited varieties have been obtained (for example, Black Velvet, 'Black Prince'), but they are not recommended for cultivation in the Moscow Region.
Cherry plum is no longer an exotic fruit, it is not only firmly entrenched in the backyard gardens, but also pleases with abundant blooms and crops.

I want to share my story of saving cherry plum. True, I do not know what sort of grows in our country, maybe, dear readers will tell? I will tell you a little where our dacha is located: this is the Karelian Isthmus, one of the most picturesque places of the Leningrad region: pine forest, sand, the cleanest lake in walking distance. Why my family chose this particular place, I no longer remember, I was small then.
When the parents began to cultivate the site, dad brought a plum seedling. He took root, began to grow, but fructified and rarely bloomed. Perhaps more proper care was required. It so happened that for several years the site was abandoned - cherry plum grew into a bush. Then the construction of the house began, the tree was not touched, but there was no proper care.
After three years of construction has come to an end, we gradually put the site in order. Then I drew attention to the plum: some leaves looked unhealthy and fell prematurely. The harvest was not at all pleased. My husband offered to cut down a tree, but I insisted, decided to leave and try to reanimate. Saw to get always have time.
She began to look for information on the Internet, according to the description, she found out that it was coccomycosis.
I started treatment with copper sulfate. In the autumn I spread it in a bucket according to the instructions and processed the whole tree. Probably, readers scolded me, but I'm new to this business ... After processing, I “canned” the tree for the winter.
In the spring, she decided on one more step: she took a secateur in her hands, cut off small shoots, formed a trunk, and her husband sawed off thick large branches.
All slices I missed garden pitch, then bleached the bark.
I was not lazy, I additionally watered in dry time. In May our cherry plum, having felt care and relief, blossomed! Oh, how much joy was for the whole family! She bloomed profusely, with beautiful white flowers, just like sakura in a botanical garden!
We did not expect a harvest, but at the end of August I collected a basket of incredibly tasty fruits. Yellow, juicy, with wax bloom! And ate and jam boiled.
In the fall, when the foliage fell, I cut the crown of the tree, since only the lower branches of the plum were bearing fruit. Hopefully this will help the tree grow even stronger.
Plum is dear to me also because it is the memory of my parents. Let it bloom and pleases!

I often read articles in which residents of regions belonging to the zone of risky farming complain about the lack of annually fruiting fruit trees that are resistant to a difficult climate. I live in the fourth climatic zone - not the north, of course, but thermophilic crops do not give us a harvest every year. Therefore, I want to tell you about the most reliable and unpretentious tree in my by no means small garden.
Meet: my favorite - yellow cherry plum. On the plot near the house, two huge cherry plum trees grow right under the bedroom window. We got them from the old owners, so I don't know the name of the variety. Every year in May, at the same time as apricots and cherries, they bloom, and the whole air around is filled with the hum of hundreds of bees.
As a rule, recurrent frosts are frequent at this time, and we try to save apricots and cherries by planting smoky heaps, but still we do not always get the harvest of these crops. But cherry plum does not require such worries! It grows on the northern wall of the house, creating a thick shadow. Does not require watering - enough rain. I also don’t pamper with top dressing, except that I bury unharvested berries in the trunk circle.
Harvesting is also easy and convenient. The ripening fruits fall to the ground, turning the garden into a solid yellow carpet. The main thing is that they do not beat or crumple when dropped, cherry plum generally has excellent transportability! Fruits are medium-sized, juicy, slightly oily taste, the stone separates well.
Cherry plum reproduces well from the seeds: from the berries that have fallen over the fence, a small grove has already grown. All the characteristics of the variety are preserved completely. Cherry plum blanks are great. For example, a delicious compote with the addition of zucchini or a delicious jam with a slight sourness. In winter I also use it for filling puff pastries.

For a three-liter jar: a jar of seedless cherry plums (750 ml), a glass (250 ml) of peeled and chopped squash without seeds, 350 g of sugar.
Put the washed cherry plum and zucchini in a sterile jar, fill it with sugar, fill it with boiling water, roll it up, turn it upside down and wrap it until it cools completely.
By the way, cherry plum activates bile secretion, normalizes metabolic processes, strengthens the immune system and has a beneficial effect on the skin.
