PLANTING ROCKAMBLE - DESCRIPTION AND CULTIVATION
This plant has many nicknames: hair bow, garlic onion, Egyptian onion, Spanish and elephant garlic, botanical name - rokambol.
This wild plant has long been cultivated in Asia, especially in China and Korea. Egyptian onions could get to the Slavs from Byzantium, from there it spread to the north of Europe. This unusual vegetable is very rare in our summer residents. And in vain.
A chamomile can weigh up to 80 g. This is a lot compared to high-quality garlic and shallots.
ROCKAMBALL - DESCRIPTION
Many consider it to be a type of rhubarb garlic, and rockambol is a variety. This is a misconception. Rocambole, of course, is onion, but has the same head as garlic, which is divided into several cloves.
Its leaves are light green, non-smooth to the touch, with a waxy coating. Already the first sprouts signal us about a small botanical phenomenon: a thick stem neck with wide leaves will appear soon ... The plant grows up to half a meter in height and has a strong peduncle ("pipe"), and the bulb grows underground.
Three varieties are known - Pearl, Janissary and White Elephant. The latter was bred in our country and has a lot of advantages: it is not susceptible to fusarium, high productivity, soft taste. The reader should also pay attention to the Pearl variety. It was bred for cultivation in private households. The variety is winter-hardy, mid-season, darting (the flower arrow ends with a lush umbrella-shaped inflorescence). The taste, however, is quite spicy.

PECULIARITIES OF GROWING A ROAMBALL
The plant prefers open areas with adequate lighting. Rocambole is frost-resistant, and in this it resembles ordinary garlic. The best predecessors are legumes, cucumbers, cabbage, zucchini, under which organic matter was introduced. After potatoes and tomatoes, you can not plant a rockambol.
Spring and winter forms of onion-garlic are known, but podzimny landing in our area is risky: the culture sometimes freezes, therefore plants need to be carefully covered. After all, rokambol, with all its endurance, is thermophilic.
Therefore, I prefer the spring form. Ridge cook in the fall, placing them from north to south. I bring in the soil on 30-40 g / sq. m of superphosphate and potassium salt. The soil at the site is sour, therefore I add wood ash (at the rate of 130 g / sq. M). Those who have a heavy loam on the site should be diluted with sand.
Council
If possible, pre-sow siderata in a selected area (for example, white mustard, oil radish, fatseliya, oats). This improves the structure of the soil, enriches it with nitrogen and inhibits the growth of weeds. Manure or humus is best made a year before planting - under cucumbers, cabbage, pumpkin.
ROCKAMBLE: AGRICULTURAL TECHNIQUES
Rokamball propagated by bulbs-kids. Of these, in the first year, large one-teeth are formed, which in the second year turn into real bulbs.
Peduncles rokambolya do not have pollen and therefore do not give seeds. This means that when arrows appear, they should be immediately broken off so that the power of the plant goes to the development of the bulbs.
Rockambol has a considerable appetite. At the start of planting, in early spring, I bring wood ash into the soil at the rate of 400 g per square meter. m. I make the row spacing - about 25-30, and the spacing between the cloves in the row is -15-20 cm, with a planting depth of 8-10 cm. The larger the teeth, the landing is deeper and less frequent (optimally - plant large and small teeth separately each other from friend). I use horse peat as a mulch, rotted compost or a humus layer of 1-3 cm.
Before planting, the teeth should be hardened: just a week in the fridge or a couple of evening hours outdoors. Immediately before planting, it is necessary to disinfect the bulbs. To do this, they should be cleaned of excess scales, remove the old bottom and soak overnight in a weak solution of potassium permanganate.
Rokambol moisture-loving. Therefore, the drying of the soil should not be allowed, with the appearance of the first shoots, it should be moistened and then necessarily loosened.
Council
If the land has not been prepared enough, this is fixable: as soon as the seedlings appear, fertilizing with nitrogen fertilizers is required, and phosphorus-potash during bulb formation.
CLEANING AND STORAGE OF ROCKAMBLE
When the leaves begin to turn yellow and dry, it means it's time to harvest. This usually happens at the end.
September By the way, the feather at the rocballball does not lie, which can be considered an important advantage. The bulbs are easily cut off, so the remnants of the soil should be removed from them with care. After cleaning, it is worth making loose “braids”, leaving the tops, and hang them in a dry, ventilated (without drafts) place. After drying, the bulbs are kept for a couple of weeks in the light, which contributes to long-term storage and reduced losses. Then the roots and stems are cut to penechki. The rokambol is stored just like regular onions and garlic, until the next harvest.
FOOD AND MEDICAL VALUE OF ROCKBALL
Elephant garlic is very useful. The bulbs are rich in sugars, raw protein, valuable amino acids, pectins, carotene (there are more of them in green leaves), vitamins C, D, PP, group B. Essential oils phytoncides kill harmful microorganisms and antioxidants slow down cell aging.
Of mineral substances, iodine and selenium are of particular importance: the lack of the latter, among other things, leads to sexual dysfunction.
Rocambole is a wonderful seasoning. With us, he successfully replaces onions and garlic in fried potatoes, salads, meat and poultry dishes. Young leaves are eaten fresh, pickled, frozen, kvasim with cabbage.
Note
Rockball is not recommended for food if installed:
- • gallbladder disease;
- • peptic ulcer of the stomach or intestines;
- • pathology of the kidneys. Restrictions - for pregnant women, a complete ban for children under 3 years.

Baked rokamble
Such a pasty seasoning can be used to make a sauce, add to salads, pasta, mashed potatoes, spread on bread, making savory sandwiches. It is best to prepare such pasta for future use, just by freezing, and then use it for various dishes. Here is what you need to do.
From the heads of the rocambol completely cut off the top, so that the cuts of all the teeth are visible. Prepared onions put on the foil, sprinkle with salt, ground black pepper and pour over olive oil. Fresh or dry sprigs of rosemary or thyme can be put on top. Wrap the foil tightly and bake for about an hour until the garlic is soft. After that, the pulp of garlic should be squeezed out of the scales with your fingers and mash with a fork.
Here's a recipe for a salad made from a rocamball: take on 1 tsp. pasta and honey, 1 Art. l rice vinegar, 2 Art. l olive oil, a pinch of salt and black pepper, mix everything well.

Rock pickle marinated "Pink Elephant"
This appetizer is from the same “opera” as regular pickled garlic. True, he turns out not so sharp. But most importantly, this workpiece has an unusual appearance: huge cloves, and even pink. This will undoubtedly surprise guests.
Required: 5 heads of rocket ball, 1 liters of water, 50 g of coarse salt and sugar, 100 ml 6% apple or 9% table vinegar (in the second case it will be sharper), 1 beets, allspice-peas.
Cook the marinade out of water, salt and vinegar and boil for a very small 2 fire for minutes. Rokambol clean into slices, scalded with boiling water. Beets cut into thin strips, put on the bottom of a three-liter jar, then put the slices of rocket and allspice. After that, pour boiling marinade. Banks sterilized 10-15 minutes.

Recently, we began to grow such a miracle as a rockambol. It is also called garlic onion, and the corresponding taste is onion-garlic, reminds wild garlic.
Planting can be carried out both in autumn and spring, depending on the variety. We plant in March-April. It is important that the bulbs do not grow on the site before. The bed should be sufficiently lit. We pre-fertilize the soil before planting with wood ash and rotted manure. We plant with cloves, like garlic, only make the distance larger: about 15 cm between the cloves and 30 cm between the beds.
We mulch the plot with a layer of needles or sawdust, you can use straw, peat. Throughout the season, we make fertilizing several times: ammonium nitrate, slurry, or wood ash. Rockball must often be watered, as a lack of moisture spoils its taste. If you treat him with care, you can get a softer and more tender taste.
The flower arrow needs to be cut so that it does not draw moisture from the bulb. But after harvesting we leave the leaves uncut for the duration of drying, since here the onion is already picking up juices from the leaves. We store it in the pantry, and until January-February, the rock-ball does not lose its juiciness. You can eat fresh, adding to salads and meat dishes, and you can also harvest for the winter in the marinade.

For the next birthday, my friend brought me a few rock-clove teeth from a business trip. First, the novelty took a modest row in the garden with spring garlic, and then replaced this crop from the garden. Why? Rocambole is not inferior to summer garlic in taste and aroma, it is perfectly stored until April, but most importantly - there are no small irritating cloves. In addition, for five years of cultivation, the rockambole was never sick, and it was not touched by pests.
In late April and early May, I plant two beds of rock-ball. On one - the children collected last season, on the other - onion-toothed bulbs grown from children in the first year of growth. Previously, under a digging, I bring in a bucket of humus, 1 Art. ash and 1 Art. l superphosphate on 1 sq.m. Two weeks after emergence, I feed the plants with mullein solution (1: 10). In early June, I spill with an ash extract (I fill in a liter can of ash with boiling water, insist for a day). In the autumn, I carefully dig out the crop. Children, which are covered with large bulbs, are separated, dried on the floor in the hallway and put into storage in paper bags. I dry bulbs for food, like ordinary garlic, on shelves under a canopy.

How to understand that the rockambole can be removed?
How to store it properly?

- Rocambole is also called elephant garlic (because it is much larger than onion and looks more like garlic). The rocketball is ready for harvest when the leaves of the plants turn yellow. If planted in the winter - you can clean up in early August. If in the spring - cleaning can begin only in early September.
If you are late for cleaning, the scales may break, and the bulbs will break up into cloves while still in the ground. In addition, rot can form from overexposure to the bottom. All this seriously reduces the shelf life of elephant garlic. After digging the bulbs, be sure to dry well, cut the tops, leaving a part of the stalk about 5 cm long. Store the rockambol in a dry, well-ventilated room.

Dear gardeners, explain what a rokambol hair bow is?
They gave me this and said that it was garlic: outwardly it is like garlic, but more powerful, and it tastes like onion. Is this the rocambol hairstyle?
