Three years ago I planted an apple tree, variety Elena. It grew up to 2 m. They warned that the tree was highly grafted. On the very ground, below the grafting, a competitor has grown up. Big, strong. Can it be removed at the end of October? Or is it better in spring? What to do with it, when and how?

Dear Marina Yakovlevna! This is a wild top, it can be removed at any time of the year, but I would re-graft this strong “competitor” with another reliable variety in the spring, if Elena suddenly turns out to be wild too.

    Cracked apples
When I harvested apples this year, many fruits were cracked. Why can apples burst on branches? They did not fall to the ground ...

The appearance of cracks in apples can be caused by several reasons. The physiological mechanism of cracking is as follows: the skin of the fetus in some places becomes rough, loses elasticity, cell growth in these places stops, and the pulp continues to grow, and as a result, a crack appears.

This happens quite often if a prolonged drought is abruptly replaced by prolonged rains. As the moisture in the soil dries, the growth of the fruit stops. After heavy rains and in warm weather there is an increased growth of the cells of the fruit pulp, and if the skin cells lag behind in growth, then a rupture of the fetus may occur. Timely watering during dry periods quite easily eliminates this problem.
Also, the peel of an apple loses its elasticity due to the lack of calcium and boron in the soil. In this case, timely mineral supplements are necessary.
If, in addition to the cracks on the fruit, there were dark brown dense spots, then perhaps your apple tree is affected by scab.

Our parents thought for a long time what sort of apple to plant. So they would not have decided anything, if the mother’s friend hadn’t brought them a seedling from her garden. 12 years have passed, and we are still very grateful that she gave us a wonderful apple tree of the sort Verbnoye.
The first apples appeared in 4 a year after planting: huge (up to 250 g), light green, with a ruddy side, juicy, sweet and sour.
We did the first pruning in the 2nd year after planting: for the growth of lateral branches, vertical branches were removed, leaving only the shoot from the upper skeletal branch (conductor length of about 0,5 m), and cut off one third of the length of last year’s growth. Then the neighbor in the country taught the parents to determine whether the shoots were cut correctly: if the lateral branches were pulled to the trunk, their ends should be at the same height, and the vertical shoots should be 20-30 cm higher than the lateral ones.
When the apple tree began to bear fruit, the friend who gave the seedling taught her to thin the ovary - the central fruit must be removed from each bunch.

We regularly feed the trees with a solution of chicken droppings (1:20), complex fertilizers (2 matchboxes of nitrophosk granules per bucket of water) and ash (200-400 g in the trunk circle). The first time we feed the tree after flowering, and the second - after shedding excess ovaries.
