When to huddle potatoes I read that you need to huddle potatoes twice. What time is it?

The first time this is done when the potatoes reach a height of 5-10 cm. Moreover, there are two options for such an operation: on the eve of frost, as can be found out from the weather forecast, the earth is scooped up to the bushes with a hoe so as to completely fill them up. If cooling to zero and below degrees is not expected, then the tops of plants 2-3 cm long are left on the surface of the earth.
The start to the second hilling gives the appearance of buds on the bushes. At the same time, the formation of tubers begins. The earth is raked so that the stems are in an upright position, and do not tend to fall to the surface. This improves the illumination of the plants and reduces the risk of fungal infections. The height of the mounds is brought to 20-25 cm.

After 60, you begin to comprehend your capabilities and strengths in a different way. Therefore, my wife and I became supporters of natural agriculture. We plant potatoes in long boxes 1 m wide and with 70-80 cm aisles between them. From autumn, we put small and spoiled roots and fruits, as well as tops and other organic matter in the beds. We dig the planting holes in a checkerboard pattern and 10 cm deep. Pour 1 liter of water into each one, pour a handful of ash, add a pinch of onion husks and eggshells.

We dip the sprouted tuber into them and cover it with earth, but so that small depressions remain.
The sprouts that have appeared are covered with a thin layer of fine straw and in the center of each box, between the rows, we install drip irrigation tapes, which are connected to a common garden highway. Then, as the potatoes grow, we podkuchit, continuing to mulch it regularly. And so we continue to do this until the fall, so there is no need for weeding and hilling. The thickness of the mulch layer, I must say, reaches 20 cm by the end of the season. The yields are good.

The only problem we have so far is the fight against the Colorado potato beetle. You have to walk every day with a bucket and brush insects from the bushes, and this is very hard work. They tried to spray with diluted tar soap and wormwood decoction, tried to deceive the pest by reducing the smell of potato tops, without much success. So, dear gardeners, maybe someone can help with advice on how to protect potatoes from this scourge without chemical poisoning? We will be very grateful to you.
Yes, I almost forgot! In the fall, my wife Natalya Ivanovna sows green manure in the prepared beds: mustard or rye.

How many times per season do you need to spud potatoes? The neighbors do this every two weeks. They say that super-large tubers grow from this. Is it so?

      - In fact, the number of hills depends on many factors (soil composition, amount of precipitation, row spacing, clogging of the site). According to the Dutch technology for growing potatoes, they only spud it once, in Belarus - 3-4 times.

I will share my experience in caring for potatoes. I try to carry out all hills in cloudy weather. The first ("blind") - on the 7-10th day after planting, the second with sprouting of shoots - when the first shoots appear on the surface, the third - when the plants reach a height of 10-12 cm, and the last - on the eve of closing the plants in the aisles ( with the advent of the first buds). Later treatments can damage the potato. In addition, too frequent hills can cause the soil to dry out.

Super crop of potatoes from a small area

I start preparing potato tubers for planting in the second half of March.
Potato without damage my warm water and spread on a piece of film.
5 of copper sulfate, 15 of boric acid and 0,5 of potassium permanganate in a bucket of water. I spray potato tubers from all sides, let them dry and repeat the treatment twice more.
This allows you to destroy all pests and pathogens that could be on the potato.
The next day I grow in 15 l of water 60 g of water-soluble superphosphate, 40 g of urea and 10 g of boric acid. Spray the tubers again. After that, leave in the light for germination. Planted in May.
I noticed that after such preparation, potatoes grow better, are less likely to get sick, and the harvest from a small plot is enough for the whole winter.

I fully approve of the method, but to begin preparing the tubers that you plan to plant in May, it is better later - closer to mid-April.

Last summer, an unknown and therefore dangerous potato enemy appeared - a small bug. Basically, he lived on the tops of plants and significantly ate them. They became interested in gardeners who knew what kind of pest it was. It turned out - a potato flea. She is very comfortable in dry, hot weather. She especially likes it if the potatoes were planted late (we just got late for planting that year) and she got young shoots.

To save the potatoes, we had to use insecticides and more often weed planting, since fleas often come from weeds. And next year we will plant potatoes in time, so that by the heat it will grow and not suffer more from some small flea.

Some strange cases began to happen in the past two years with potatoes. I plant according to the rules, the sprouted shoots are good, strong, and therefore the shoots in the garden are friendly.

But after a month and a half, when the tubers begin to grow, the tops suddenly start to dry out, but the leaves on it do not curl. And a similar problem with strawberries: when the berries begin to ripen, the bushes wither and eventually die. What is the matter? Tell me please!

Oh, I forgot one more thing. When I dig up the ground, sometimes I find white ones, the size of a match head, of worms. Who are they? Maybot larvae?
