Growing Hot Peppers - BEST VARIETIES AND OUR REVIEWS
Hot pepper is popular all over the world. It is well known that seasoning is prepared from it, which improves the taste of food, makes it fragrant and spicy. And all because of the content in pepper essential oil, which gives it a specific unique flavor, and capsaicin - a substance responsible for its sharpness. But few people know that this sharpness is measured not only by our feelings, but also by a special scale. Focusing on it, you can choose for yourself varieties with the fruits of the level of acuity that will be most comfortable. We did so, and now in our collection of 80 varieties of this wonderful vegetable.
Sharp, even sharper
In 1920, the American chemist Wilbur Scoville decided to measure pepper sharpness in special units - Scoville Heat Units (SHU). He took a small part of the fruit and diluted with water until he stopped feeling the sharp taste, and thus determined the unit of hotness of hot pepper, taking it as a basis. The Okoville scale starts at zero, which is occupied by ordinary sweet peppers, and the pepper with the highest level of sharpness completes the table. According to the Okoville scale, peppers can be:
- • weakly pointed (from 0 to 500 SHU);
- • Medium Hot (1000 to 30 000 SHU);
- • strongly acute (from 50 000 to 100 000 SHU);
- • supersharp (from 200 000 SHU).
The title of the hottest pepper in the world is transferred from one brand to another almost every year, because selection does not stand still. More recently, the leader of zhguchest was the variety of hot pepper Carolina Reaper with the sharpness of more than 2 million units of Okoville (the level of pepper spray). Fans of extremely hot peppers annually organize competitions on eating super-sharp fruits, and the hotter the pepper, the more entertaining.
There are many different types of hot pepper in the world. Gathering a collection, we opted for three of them - the most common and, in our opinion, the most interesting ones - vegetable, Chinese and berry
