Growing cabbage in the sand - planting and care, varieties (Moscow region)
Cabbage on the sandy soil - planting and care
All the neighbors were convinced that cabbage was not growing in the sand, and they did not grow it. They discouraged me too.
And I decided to go against the advice.
The first experiment turned out to be inspiring - head goats (I don’t remember which grade, but planted both early and late) turned out to be small, but they were!
As a result, over several years I tested the early Number One Gribovsky 147, June,
F1 Transfer, F, Express, F1 Cossack. There were mid-season varieties - Nadezhda and Slava 1305, but they did not take root: butterfly whites looked for them even among marigolds, and there was not the slightest desire to constantly process insecticides (as well as collect annoying caterpillars by hand).
And of course, I checked both late varieties and hybrids - Amager 611, Belorusskaya 455, Blizzard, Zimovka 1474, Kryumon, Podarok, Taininskaya, F, Aggressor, F, Kolobok, F, Malachite.
Agricultural technology has gradually developed a common for all varieties. I tried to sow in the ground, they say, crops under the sun are developing more actively and quickly catch up with their relatives, exhausted in cups. For early grades this is partly true, although the first heads of cabbage from such "sprinters" are removed a couple of weeks later. Later, I don’t plant it at all anymore - seedlings get sick after transplanting, lose time, while in the pots of plants the roots do not suffer, and they grow immediately.
So, I sow the seeds in the middle of March and keep the seedlings in a cool loggia, so as not to stretch. I plant cabbage in the ground at the May holidays, adding compost to the planting holes, from the heart, two shovels per root, spilling lime milk for prevention of keels.
I dig holes with a reserve, deep, so that the planted bushes are below ground level. Why is this needed? First of all, for protection against frost: we have a cold zone of the Moscow Region, and there are frosts even in June. And so the non-woven material with which the plants are covered will not touch the leaves, and the cold will not burn them. The second reason is moisture retention, which is very important in the sand.

After a couple of weeks after planting, I feed the plants for the first time with infusion of bird droppings. After such stimulation, they actively begin to grow. At the same time, I soak nettles and ash in a barrel - this will feed the plantings until mid-July. Toward the end of the summer, nitrogen excluded from the diet of cabbage, leaving potassium and trace elements.
From cruciferous fleas I pollinate plants with ashes, from whites - I plant marigolds and marigolds between bushes. When the plants give 5-6 leaves, I feed them with a solution of boric acid (1/2 teaspoon per 10 liters of water). I give the second same fertilizing when the head of cabbage grow up to the size of a fist.
In the first year, she rejected a couple of early varieties - Number one mushroom 147 and June: their heads of cabbage quickly crack, which is very inconvenient if you come to the cottage on weekends.
IMPORTANT. How to know that the head is ripe and will not grow anymore? The top cover sheet will tell you: it becomes dull and brightens a little. If you leave such a head on a bed, in a few days (especially if there is a lot of rain) it will literally tear it in half.
As a result, Transfer became the winners of the contest "The Best Early Cabbage" - received a bronze medal because of medium-sized and loose heads even for early cabbage. I gave out a silver medal to hybrid F, Cossack: heads of cabbage, without cracking, sat on a bed for two weeks, were medium-sized, less than 1 kg, but leveled and ripened together, as in the picture. G rowa pleasing to the eye incredibly! However, in another dry year, the hybrid did not work. The lack of fruiting stability did not allow him to take first place.
And in the first place was F1 Express. Even, neat heads of cabbage, a tiny cob, tender leaves, sweet, juicy, crispy - while making a salad, half of the head (not without the help of the children) just evaporates!
However, early grades cannot be stored - heads of cabbage quickly rot. You can not use them for pickling - cabbage will be soft, not crispy, in a word, early varieties are only for salads, stews and soups. So, a lot of them are not needed, 10-12 forks are enough for us. If there is excess, blanch, squeeze the water and freeze. I don’t defrost it for cooking, but immediately into the pan - nice job!
Then on the table is cabbage of late varieties.
Taininskaya is one of the most beautiful varieties. It is rather medium-late, we harvest in August-September. Kocha Rsd Jsvsl. Red cabbage is not as productive as white cabbage, but very elegant
we are dense, do not crack, the variety is unpretentious and, as they say, resistant to the keel (but I did not have the opportunity to check it). True, it is not worth keeping it for a long time, and we use it first.
The gift is kept better. Heads of he, too, are dense, weighing 2-3 kg. The heads of cabbage are all even, even at the exhibition, dense, without voids, sweet, tasty, juicy.
Last Year's Discovery - F, Megaton1. Unpretentious, tasty, bedridden, heads of cabbage turn out very large, so much that they fall under their own weight. We have to clad them with bricks ahead of time. The largest pulled by 7 kg ... and broke the previous record: a head of Belorusskaya 455 variety weighed only 6,2 kg. But both the hybrid and the variety calmly withstand the first frosts in the fall in the bud. We harvest in October-November.
In contrast with these giants, Crymon does not look so impressive. Heads of cabbage are medium-sized, dark green, with a strong patina. But when you take them off, you simply marvel at the weight. Like lead! Dense, leaf to leaf, stalk quite small and short. One fork is enough to cook cabbage soup a couple of times, and even make a salad or vinaigrette. It is stored perfectly - it does not rot, does not grow, and almost until July, without changing its taste.
The latest variety tested is Zimovka 1474. For almost the entire season, cabbage proudly brandishes leaf burdocks and literally at the last moment, in September, cabbage heads appear. They pour right before our eyes and by October reach the size of a human head. The variety is not afraid of frosts, we harvest in October-November. Heads are kept, at least until mid-spring.
But Amager 611 had to be abandoned. All its advantages - large dense, perfectly stored forks - fade before losses. Seedlings and young plants more often than other varieties suffer from root rot. In his footsteps, the Blizzard also went, however, with a different “diagnosis” - it did not show itself with us. Heads turned out to be small, of different sizes and very, very, very attractive to slugs. In a word, they ate well.
For indulgence, I grow Red Jewel - red-headed, reliable, productive. It is not early, as stated on the bag, but rather of medium maturity - we harvest the crop in late July and early August. Heads of cabbage are small (the largest weighed 1,3 kg), are relatively dense and ripen almost simultaneously. I use it in salads and for salting, as during the heat treatment its gorgeous violet color “dies”. Caterpillars practically do not damage it - the leaves are rather rough.
F1 The aggressor only experienced last year: failed to grow seedlings, bought in the market, in cassettes. I was pleased that the plants grew and tied the harvest together. When it turned out that the cruciferous flea with whites and slugs does not stick to it, some doubts arose: is it edible? Maybe the leaves are so rough that they only cook? But no, the cabbage was tender, tasty and juicy. And very tasty pickled!
So, after watching my cabbage beds, and the neighbors began to grow this vegetable that had not previously lived with us.
WHERE DOES VEGETABLE PORCH IN KOCHAN?
Sometimes, in the heads of the cut, thin, like parchment, dry layers are visible. During storage on these dead leaves mucous bacteriosis can appear, which will quickly destroy the head of cabbage, turning it into a mass with an unpleasant odor. This is a physiological disease caused by stress that plants experienced during the growing season. Especially often such layers can be seen in late varieties grown in hot and dry summers.
How to avoid the appearance of such dry layers? First of all, you need to optimize watering - plants should not experience a moisture deficit. And of course, it is not superfluous to add calcium top dressing.

Some gardeners are faced with the fact that the cabbage does not tie forks, but only "dissolve" large leaves.
Most often this is due to improper fertilization. In particular, in the holes where the cabbage is planted, you can not make a large amount of manure. At the same time, it is acceptable to use humus in a dose of up to 3 kg per 1 sq. M. m. In each well should also add 1 Art. l superphosphate or nitrofoski and thoroughly pour water.
