Three ways of sprouting potatoes: dry, wet and stimulating

SPRINGING POTATOES - WAYS
To make the future harvest of potatoes richer and get it faster, before planting the potato tubers, I advise you to prepare for this operation. Everyone knows about the germination in the light, but this is not the only way to increase the yield of potatoes.
I will share my versions of the most effective methods of germination, tested by me and my friends.
DRY METHOD OF GARDEN TREATMENT
Dry germination in the light is the most common method of vernalization (inducing seeds or plants to grow and develop more intensively) of seed potatoes. Thanks to him, the first seedlings will appear 1,5-2 weeks earlier, the yield will seriously increase, and at the same time, unsuitable planting material can be rejected.
In order to germinate tubers in this way, you need a well-lit and cool room with a temperature in the first week of about 18, and then - 12-15 degrees. However, the light in no case should be bright and direct, but only scattered. If the lighting is poor, it is worthwhile to additionally use an artificial light source so that in general the tubers are daily exposed to beams for at least 8-10 hours.
Usually, potatoes come to a state of readiness for planting in about a month, but here we must focus on the temperature outside. If the arrival of real spring is postponed, and the weather outside the window does not dispose to the immediate planting of potatoes in the ground, then the germination of potatoes can be slowed down by lowering the temperature to 5-7 degrees.
And a week before the alleged landing of the tubers should be darkened. With a long light stimulation on the tuber, a special growth inhibitor is formed, which inhibits the active stretching of the shoots. It must be deactivated, which is what shading is for.
WET METHOD CROPPEDING POTATOES
Wet germination allows potato tubers to acquire sprouts faster (usually for 15-20 days). Temperature conditions in 15-17 degrees, moderate air humidity and regular airing of the room are required here.
For wet germination, large baskets or boxes are best suited. The bottom must be laid out with sawdust, moss or humus (the first layer is made 2-3 thick, see cm and moisturize properly). Then pour a layer of potatoes and wet material again. So we do, until the box is filled.

Note
Covering material with wet germination is best wetted not with water, but with a solution of mineral fertilizers. 10 g of superphosphate, 50 g of copper sulfate, 20-35 g of ammonium nitrate and potassium sulfate and 40 g of manganese sulfate and boric acid should be added to 100 l of water.
STIMULATING TROUBLESHOOTING
If before planting it turned out that many cooked tubers were "lazy", they can be stimulated to grow. In a dry and moderately warm room (temperature - from 16 degrees) we lay out the "sleeping" tubers and keep them there for 1-2 weeks (the rudiments of the eyes should appear during this time). The procedure is called wilting, because during this time the tubers lose some of their moisture, but they accumulate special enzymes that accelerate the appearance of eyes.
And then for the 3-4 the day before the landing we warm up the potatoes. We transfer the planting material to a room with a temperature of 30-35 degrees and keep it there before landing. This procedure contributes to the sharp production of enzymes in tubers that stimulate growth and increase productivity. Remember that competent germination guarantees high-quality, rich and earlier harvest, which I sincerely wish you!

How to "reanimate" potatoes
When the temperature in the cellar where the potatoes are stored falls just below 0 degrees, it happens that the root crop acquires a sweetish taste when cooked. This is understandable: at low temperatures, part of the starch turns into sugar.
To return the potato to its inherent taste, the tubers need to be kept in the dark for several days at room temperature. If the potatoes are still caught in frost, you can save them from an unpleasant sweet taste by placing them in cold water for a while, and then lower them into boiling water, where, in addition to salt, add a little vinegar (1 teaspoon per 1 liter of water) or lemon juice. I try to use such potatoes, adding it to cabbage soup, hodgepodge, vegetable stew. In them, the sweet taste goes almost unnoticed. Of course, frozen potatoes are not suitable for mashed potatoes, deep-fried potatoes, as they quickly darken and become tasteless.
If, on the contrary, when the temperature rises, the stored potato begins to sprout, it increases the content of alkaloids that are harmful to our body. In this case, I diligently cut off the sprouts, cut out the “eyes”, cut off the peel from the tubers thicker than usual.
Boil sprouted potatoes preferably in a large amount of water, which then must be drained: it is not suitable for consumption.

Potatoes in the cellar were covered with white sprouts ahead of time. Why? Is it possible to eat such sprouted potatoes?
#
- This happens when the tubers come out of dormancy.
The reasons for this may be a high storage temperature (for potatoes, the ideal temperature is + 2 ... + 5 degrees) and an incorrectly selected variety. The temperature in the cellar can be regulated by ventilation. But you need to ventilate gradually, 1-2 hours a day, while controlling the temperature with a thermometer. But even at the optimum storage temperature, tubers can germinate ahead of time if it is an early maturing variety that has a short dormant period. Plus, the tubers can be affected by scab, which also contributes to the fact that they germinate ahead of time.
Can you eat sprouted potatoes? Can. Of course, it loses its taste, but in general, sprouted potatoes do not pose any threat to human and animal health.

Potatoes were sprouted a little for early use: I put a layer of moss in the boxes, placed the tubers on it according to the 5 × 5 cm pattern and covered it with another layer on top. Then she sprayed with an ash solution, but did not fill it!
After a while, sprouts appear - peppy, strong, green. Then I just separate the moss with sprouts like a layer of cake. The roots unhook, and I lay them in the hole, sprinkling earth on top. Well, then all the advice.
#
The potatoes that I left for planting sprouted strongly. The tubers have become shriveled. However, I would like to keep this variety. Is there any way to revive potatoes? Do I need to break off long white shoots before planting?
#
- You can reanimate potatoes by soaking them in a solution of Epin or Heteroauxin. But it's hard to say for sure. If the potatoes are very wrinkled, then it may be worth abandoning planting altogether. As for the sprouts, it makes no sense to break them off, since new ones will begin to grow in place of the broken ones, which will be weaker. They will deplete the tubers even more, and there may be no harvest at all.
Plant the tubers along with the sprouts, carefully laying them in the ground.

Potatoes, which are going to be planted in April, spread out in a cool, bright room for vernalization. Turn regularly, discard tubers with thin white sprouts.

I germinate potatoes in a convenient container
I begin to germinate early potatoes in the first half of March. I soak the tubers for an hour in a bowl of water at room temperature. Then I lay them out in egg trays. And I put it next to the balcony door. I spray with water once a day. As soon as the sprouts hatch, I transfer it to the windowsill. And when the air temperature on the glazed balcony stops dropping below +12 degrees, I take out the trays with potatoes there. I plant tubers in open ground in mid-April. I mulch abundantly with straw and cover with a dense spunbond.
