WHAT CAN BE PREPARED FROM ELDER
Some gardeners shun elderberries - they don't like the pungent smell of leaves.
Elderberry is planted in the garden, wanting to drive away the voracious rodents and pests.
However, this shrub is much more useful. The fruits of black and Canadian elderberry are edible, have medicinal properties.
In addition, varieties with variegated leaves are very beautiful.
Edible elder
Black elderberry is thermophilic, grows in the south, but also bears fruit in central Russia. They are black and ripen in August.
It tastes sweet and sour. In Europe, fruit varieties with high yields were bred: Sambu, Corsair, Gamberg (late ripe), Danau (early ripe). Decorative leafy varieties will decorate the site, while their fruits can also be eaten and processed. This is a golden-leafed Aurea, with an openwork crown made of carved leaves of Laciniata, Albarginate with a silver edge of leaves, Aureomarginate and Madonna with gold. Black Beauty, Gerda, Purple with dark leaves, and the variety Eva is called "black lace" due to openwork.
Originally from America, Canadian elderberry. In the middle lane, plants can freeze above snow levels. The Indians ate the fruits of this species long before the Europeans arrived on the American continent. She also bred a variety of varieties, including decorative ones with edible fruits.

Elderberry
From the second half of May until mid-summer, my black elderberry is strewn with huge yellowish-white inflorescences, from which a delicate heady aroma emanates. It's time to prepare valuable medicinal material.
I cut off the inflorescences completely, dry them with a thin layer on paper in a room with good ventilation. The whole family drinks tea from flowers for colds, coughs, high fever (2 tsp. Raw materials per 250 ml of boiling water, leave for 10 minutes) - one cup three times a day.
It's a pity, but gardeners are often dismissive of elderberry. Although this plant, in addition to benefit, can become a decoration of the site.
Elderberry grows both in the sun and in the shade, but in the illuminated area, of course, the shrub (or tree) will be more beautiful. This is especially important for plants with variegated or colored leaves.
You can plant an elderberry already in the coming fall. But if the soil is acidic, postpone the work until spring, and in October, under digging, add dolomite flour (200-400 g per 1 sq. M).
Elderberry is unpretentious, I feed it once a year (in April or October) with mullein solution (1:10) or complex mineral fertilizer. I cut the tree in early spring, removing weak and damaged shoots, as well as root branches.
To give the elderberry a decorative look, you can trim the vertical shoots to the side branches. Due to this, the foliage will be large, the crown is dense. But if you carry out such pruning every year - elderberry will not bear fruit. To achieve a crop, you need to leave annual shoots. The fruits are usually harvested in September.

HOW TO BREAK
Elderberry can be propagated by all known options.
Seeds are sown on a special bed under the winter to a depth of 3-5 cm and mulched with peat. Shoots will already appear in the spring. But with seed propagation, the properties of the variety are not always preserved.
Varietal elderberry is usually propagated by cuttings. Green cuttings are cut from June to August. In a greenhouse at a temperature of + 25 ... + 27 degrees, and humidity 85-90%, they quickly root. In autumn it is already possible to land in the ground.
Lignified cuttings 25-30 cm long are cut in autumn and planted in open ground to a depth of 15 cm, leaving only one bud above the ground. In the autumn of next year, rooted plants are carefully transplanted to a permanent place.
