Pepper cultivation - varieties, planting and care (Tula region)
PEPPER IN COLD SUMMER - LANDING AND CARE
For a long time, it was not possible to grow pepper. By the end of the 2-3 season, stunted bushes “bestowed” with punctured fruits of very dubious taste qualities. Moreover, all varieties behaved in this way, which means that it was in agricultural technology. Therefore, I decided to completely change it.
The first thing that confused was a weak seedling with a very thin stem at the base of the earth. Some bushes did not even survive the transplant - they broke, and in their hands remained a stem with the beginnings of aerial roots. Needless to say, such failures could not develop a complete root system.
So, for sowing, I chose several varieties of bell pepper. The seeds were sown in very loose home-made soil (forest land from birch trees, peat and a lot of sand). I heard once that seedlings of pepper are extremely important breathable soil.
When the seedlings appeared, not expecting the appearance of the first true leaf, she pecked them into separate cups - transparent bottles from under the milk, in order to see how the plant develops both from above and below, and draw conclusions.
I read that pepper is extremely sensitive to drought, and at all stages of development. Sprouts were watered daily, and sometimes even a couple of times a day, so that the surface layer did not dry out: abundantly in the morning and slightly on the surface in the evening. Loose soil and the possibility of unhindered water flow into pallets protected the roots from waterlogging.
A week later, she carried out the first feeding with a weak solution of calcium nitrate. This fertilizer helps plants to form powerful roots, but at the same time does not cause
overly active growth of the aerial part. I periodically sprayed the foliage with the HB-101 preparation and kept the plants under phytolamps for 12 hours a day - there is clearly not enough light on our northern windows for them. It is difficult to say what exactly affected the plants, but they developed perfectly: the roots quickly covered the earthen lump, the trunks were short, stocky and plump. Yes, plump from the ground itself, without fragile constrictions. Large, dark green leaves also signaled that my peppers enjoyed the conditions.
Conclusion: before my seedlings in childhood received less water and food. Therefore, it grew so feeble.
In nature, the foreseen time the bushes laid the crown buds. Oh, early! The yard is still mid-April, and they decided to bloom! The fact is that pepper, which bloomed in a seedling pot, will never yield the maximum yield. The plant throws all its strength not on growth and development, but on the extension of a kind. But both the aerial part and the roots are still weak, because what is 700 ml of soil?
Conclusion: pepper must be sown at different times. I put the seeds in the ground on February 23. It is suitable for medium and late ripening peppers. But the early varieties in my conditions should be sown, perhaps not earlier than 10 in March and planted in a greenhouse for the May holidays.
In the meantime, she decided to cut off the crown buds on parts of plants. Conduct, so to speak, another experiment on the topic: is it necessary to do this? Someone claims that the plant throws all its strength into one fruit, grows a giant, and the overall yield suffers. Someone says that when this flower is removed, many fruits of the same size are formed on the bush. I wonder what theory my peppers are inclined to?
Having planted seedlings in the ground, under each bush I stuck an inverted 2-liter bottle from under kvass. Of course, not empty, but with water. So the pepper will not lack moisture. Of course, these bottles had to be changed regularly.
HB-101 was again sprayed on the sheet so that the plants strengthened faster. By installing arcs, she covered the 2 landing with layers of non-woven material. We often have late frosts in the spring, and the greenhouse, alas, does not protect enough. After a week and a half, I fed the plantings with the same calcium nitrate.
The transplant was not noticed and almost immediately went into growth. And even those bushes on which the crown buds remained, they were not dropped.

Grew 11 varieties: very promising Ryuminsky, Spanish, my favorite extremely unpretentious Snake-like, as well as Heracles and Elephant Trunk bought in the store. There were cats in a bag - mined at a gathering of amateur caramel gardeners, Pimientos del piquillo (which was known to be Spanish sweet pepper), Elefant (which was known nothing but sweet) and some Bulgarian and Bulgarian yellow amateur selection.
Ryuminsky - mid-late variety. Bushes are high, in good conditions grow to 1 m or more. Peppers with a diameter of 4-5 cm, length up to 40 cm, scarlet, stunningly delicious, without a sharp pepper flavor. And how many of them! Vladimir Ryumin, who shared the seeds of this amazing variety with a lost name, picked fruit from his 8 bushes in boxes.
My bushes did not grow so large, about 70-80 cm. This variety must obviously be sown later so that it does not bloom in seedlings, or transplant the bushes into larger pots. Therefore, the height of the bushes and their productivity were lower than expected. But the taste pleased. Yes, in this cold summer, the variety from early became medium late, and we took the first ripe (in biological ripeness) fruits only at the end of August.
Spanish - An unknown large-fruited variety, a gift from Spanish friends. I distributed its seeds to my acquaintances, so I knew that in our climate this is an ultra-large and thick-walled sweet pepper of a blunt-conical shape. Sweet, juicy, in a word, a sight for sore eyes. One fruit may well weigh 400-500 g, and there may be 3-5 such on a bush. The bush is semi-spreading, 70-80 cm high. The timing is rather mid-ripening, and with a lack of heat, it is quite late. But how sweet and juicy it is! The walls are thick, 7-8 mm. For the first time I managed to grow such a giant.
I bought seeds of Snake-like many years ago at the exhibition. Stunningly unpretentious variety, early ripening, fruit stably, every year, regardless of whether I mock seedlings or grow it as needed. Narrow, curved, like snakes, scarlet fruits curling into a ring are very similar to hot peppers. Wonderful thing if you need to play guests. However, he is good in soups, and canned, and in vegetable stews. Its pulp is not mnogo, but very aromatic and tasty. I harvest it, stringing it, dry it and use it in winter as needed. For this variety, flowering at the seedling stage is absolutely not critical.
Hercules - due to late ripeness, it bloomed only in the ground. Plants are low, about 50-60 cm, richly decorated with cuboid fruits 10-12 cm long. The walls are thick and juicy. Ripening, the fruits blush theoretically. The variety pleased with the yield, but in this cold summer the peppers did not have time to ripen on the bush.
Elephant's trunkdeclared as early ripe, red and sharp, turned out to be ... sweet. Moreover, he was so similar to the variety Ox earthat there were doubts about the purity of seeds. Srednerosly, 60-70 cm high, quite sprawling - had to be tied immediately to 2 supports. Fruits are elongated, cone-shaped, characteristically flattened laterally, glossy, palm-long. They weighed 160-200 g. Given the cold summer, it is not so bad. Unless the seedlings began to bloom before planting in the ground, so the bushes "stretched out" only 3-5 fruits.
Caramel should be planted at least for its beauty! These peppers are small in size - 10-12 cm long, but there are a lot of them, more than 30 pieces. Ripening, they acquire a chocolate color. The variety is very early, the bushes are compact, but they still need support because of the number of fruits.
О Pimientos del piquillo found information that these are small Spanish peppers with thin skin, long and with a sharp tip. In their raw form, their taste is not very pleasant, with a slight bitterness. And the flesh of peppers acquires its unique sweet and sour taste after frying on the grill or baking. Productivity inspired, and the size of the peppers is really small, about 10 cm. However, they did not live to the grill - the family washed them in salads.
Elephant at first shocked by his appearance. Very interesting variety!
The peel of the fruit is not habitually glossy, but completely shaded, as if during the growth process the peppers crack and these microcracks then overgrow. On the bush, 5-6 fruits were formed, large, up to 25 cm long. The raw flesh is bitter, but the baked fruits brought a surprise: they became surprisingly fragrant and ... just fiery! Launched them on Harris sauce. It turned out very tasty. By the way, the more strokes and cracks on the fruit, the thicker the flesh. The bush is low, 50-60 cm, a little leafy.

Bulgarian red - I was expecting to see something like Gift of Moldova, however, was pleasantly surprised by the size and taste of the fruit. They turned out to be huge - bigger than a palm, and at the same time an early variety. But the productivity let us down - early flowering was critical. Removed from the bush only 2-3 fruits. The support is necessary! This pepper is very tasty baked (in the oven, with a drop of oil so that the peppers do not stick). It is peeled off very easily. It can be preserved and eaten just like that - for example, with meat. You’ll just lick your fingers!
But the Bulgarian yellow turned out to be very late. At least this summer.
June turned out to be warm here, and in July and August, September suddenly “came”. Cold days and nights, almost daily rains ... In a word, the peppers were sad. I had to sprinkle them with an immunostimulator unscheduled, feed them on the sheet (in the cold, the roots absorb nutrients poorly), and here and there, open plastic dark bottles should be set down with their throats. Although somehow warming during the day, they gave heat to the ground and plant roots. And despite the adverse weather, my peppers hardly dropped their ovaries and fruits and lasted until the end of August, when the summer returned to our region.
As for the removal of the crown bud, I consider this an unnecessary waste of time. The very time that sometimes is so lacking for plants to form a crop.
