GROWING PRINTS FOR VERTICAL GARDENING. LANDING AND CARE
I got carried away with vertical gardening. Tell me where to start and what conditions unpretentious vines need.
Denis Fedorov, Moscow region
PRINCE - UNIVERSAL LIANA
“The prince is great for this.” It is good as a hedge, in combined plantings and for landscaping various vertical surfaces. In a couple of years in partial shade and on fertile soil, the plant will master any support up to 3 m high. You can grow the prince in the form of a groundcover - his long lashes with flowers will cover the lawn with a chic carpet to surprise you and guests of the garden.
PRINCE - LANDING, CARE
It is better to plant the prince (in May, and in the fall — at the end of August-September) in places protected from the wind, so that the root zone is in the shade and the sun falls on the upper part. It can grow on any soil, but preference is given to loose soil with a neutral pH reaction. It does not tolerate stagnation of water, so drainage is placed in the landing pit.
Handle the seedling carefully; it has fragile roots. Before planting, the flowerbed is dug up, fertilizers are applied: for 1-1, 5 square meters. m (land area for one plant) - 5 kg of humus or compost, 2-3 tbsp. wood ash, 50 g of superphosphate. If the soil is acidified, add 50-100 g of slaked lime. Do not deepen the root neck, otherwise there is a risk of it being frozen. Around the planting, put a thick layer of mulch, which will protect the roots from overheating. Water the plant infrequently, but generously, so that the soil dries deep. In the heat - 1-2 watering per week. They feed 1-2 times a month throughout the growing season. I alternate liquid organic (infusion of mullein or bird droppings, herbal) and mineral nutrition (nitroammophoska: 10 g / 10 l of water), complex compounds.
The prince is frost-resistant, he does not need to be removed from the support, to cover. It blooms in early spring on last year's shoots. It blooms profusely until the end of June. At the end of flowering, the liana does not lose its decorative effect, since original fruits appear on it, which last until late autumn. Almost all varieties bloom repeatedly in August on the shoots of the current year.

Pruning the prince
Cut to rejuvenate every 3-5 years, removing no more than 1/3 of the green mass. Cut cuttings are suitable for rooting. The rest of the time, sanitary pruning is carried out, cutting dry, broken, lost decorative branches and withered inflorescences.
HARVESTING
The prince rarely infects diseases and pests. Its fibers contain glycoside, a poisonous burning substance that can protect against invasion of parasitic insects and fungal diseases. But snails and slugs often damage the leaves. They are easier to assemble by hand.
How can an adult prince bush be propagated?

THE PRINCE FROM SHEETS, SEEDS, SUMMERS ..
—Green cuttings with two internodes are cut just before flowering. The lower section should be oblique, it is treated with a root stimulant and planted in a greenhouse.
You can propagate the prince by layering - they dig in the desired shoot at any time of the growing season. When the root has its roots, it is sedimented from the mother plant.
It is more convenient to sow seeds in the greenhouse in the fall, then seedlings will appear in June.
In early spring, you can divide an adult bush. To do this, carefully dig it out and cut it into separate parts so that each one has buds and roots.

What to do with the prince, who has grown "to obscene"? After all, they write that this vine does not need to be cut. Indeed, this botanical clematis is not pruned, as it blooms in the spring on those shoots that it has grown earlier, and only occasionally releases flowers on young growth by autumn. In our garden in the spring, we make sure to trim the tops a little to stimulate growth. During the season, we have to cut shoots for cuttings, and this is what happens. When cutting old stems, new ones grow together and have time to ripen before the cold weather. Moreover, they can be straightened and give the plant a beautiful look, because princes always give a lot of vines.
But if the bottom is tangled, exposed and looks sloppy, I advise you to simply cut it even now to a height of 50 cm and thin out, leaving as many shoots as you think will be enough to decorate the place. Choose medium thickness and "not shaggy". Stretch them along the trellis and secure. In the spring, continue to care for the prince as usual, and distribute the growing vine at your discretion.
Such a cardinal pruning will deprive spring flowering, but then it will be easy for you to form a bush without turning it into "impassable jungle".

In November, when all the foliage has already flown around, it is convenient to adjust the crown of the prince. Usually it grows densely, the shoots are tangled and too long. You can, of course, do this in the spring, but the plant starts waking up very early.
The princes belong to the plants of the northern garden, so I don’t even worry about their vine - it can withstand severe frosts. But I advise, like the shoots of clematis, to also spud with earth, because the accumulated melt water can freeze and damage the root collar. And this will contribute to the entry of pathogenic microbes from the soil into the cracks.
