Planting carrots in 4 stages from a carrot fly (Smolensk region)
GROWING CARROTS IN 4 STAGES PLANTING AND CARE, STRUGGLE WITH CARROT FLY
Sometimes even proven methods, such as combined planting with onions or sowing in the early stages, do not save the crop. And then what to do? Look for bald spots! Where? And now you will find out.
I want to talk about my experiences in growing carrots. Suddenly, my letter will also be useful to someone? So, in 2015, a carrot fly destroyed my carrots. For all the time of my gardening (and I have already been in service for almost 30 years), this has never happened before: I threw out seven buckets of root crops that were unusable.
And this despite the fact that the sowing was carried out in the spring as early as possible. True, she didn’t have a carrot: she was saved only by the one that was planted later than everyone else in early July. Here's a paradox ... And most interestingly, the carrots that were "killed" by a fly were planted along with the onion sets. But he, by the way, grew up good, did not get sick, and was then stored well. The following year, the carrots were planted in another place, not in two, but in four stages.
Carrots planted in late April. The bed was sealed with radish. The result is excellent. True, all this carrot went to food and to the workpiece.
Carrots planted in the 20th of May. The bed was beetroot. Result: the carrots grew, as they say, the middle in half, but the beets turned out to be excellent, although it got from sparrows. For the first time, I also encountered such "aggression" from the birds in relation to vegetables. My beets grew up to 7-9 cm, stood clean, without any fleas and midges, and her leaves, apparently, seduced the birds, who simply pounced on them with a cloud.
I had to start a war.
We made a stuffed crow with my husband out of plastic bottles, which they put on a stick stuck in the garden. Sparrows immediately switched to other objects, and I had to reanimate my warped poor little beet.
I sprayed it with a solution of a growth stimulant, poured several times with fermented grass, into which I launched microorganisms, fed it once with yeast top dressing (100 g per bucket of water) and treated it with a salt solution a couple of times (so that the root crops were sweeter). And my beets came to life, giving a decent harvest.
Carrots planted on June 15. The bed did not condense. On the contrary, planted the remnants of carrots to the family onion. The harvest turned out not to say that it is bad, but below average. And onions too.
Carrots planted on July 5. This planting was done not for root crops, but for the production of carrot tops, which she used for harvesting tomatoes. And planted carrot seeds on a bed with garlic. Here was its own background. A little animal walked along this bed in the autumn, leaving behind very large, wide passages (it doesn’t look like a mole), dragging along a lot of planted cloves. At first I thought that they simply went deep while digging up the animal’s moves, I even looked for them in the ground, but in vain. So the garlic with bald spots grew on the bed until I planted carrots there.

Garlic, by the way, was harvested at the very end of July. By that time, carrots had already risen, and I plowed it a couple of times. And the mustard sowed on the place left after the garlic. I look, she went up well, and chic carrot leaves began to pour along with her (by the way, it was a variety of Rothe Riesen). And when it came time to roll up the tomatoes, the tops were so juicy and greasy that it was just a sight for sore eyes. Mustard, however, waved more than a meter in height and bloomed. The carrots were bored with me, and that there under its foliage grew below, I admit honestly, I did not even look. I cut off all the tops, finished with the blanks, and only then decided for the sake of interest to dig the ground where there was carrots. I repeat, I didn’t count on anything; I took it up only to keep the experiment clean.
And there you would not believe root vegetables hid from 30 to 40 cm long and in diameter from 7 to 9 cm. All of them were smooth, whole, and what juicy and sweet they tasted! I have never had such a crop, although I have not planted this variety for the first time.
I also want to note that on the same bed before the garlic grew potatoes, under which my husband and I in autumn laid a thick layer of all organic waste and plant debris. Siderats did not sow, did not have time, because frost hit. During the winter, everything was rotten, and the potatoes planted in the spring gave such tubers that at least send them to the exhibition. Then, as already described above, there I planted garlic, which I fed with yeast, ash and herbal infusions.
True, I must say that now, in the winter, it turned out that several of those wonderful carrots collected on the "garlic" bed were half hollow. Someone ate them from the inside. And what is strange, this did not even affect the tops. What is it who will tell? However, because of those spoiled carrots, I was not upset. On the contrary, she thanked God for an excellent harvest anyway.
And finally, I will share one very interesting recipe. Exotic lovers will especially like it. Fill the cast iron ducklings with a volume of 3 l finely chopped asparagus beans and blanch for 5-5 minutes. 7-800 g of carrots cut into circles. Finely chop 900 large onions.
Add to the ducklings to the beans. There to put 2 tbsp. l sugar, 1 tbsp. l salt, a small bunch of parsley, 2 leaves of parsley, 6 pieces of sweet peas, 150 g of sunflower oil, 1/2 part of 0 liter of tomato paste and 5 liter of water. Stir everything and simmer in the oven for 0, 5 hours over low heat. Pull out, add another 3 tsp. salt, 5 tbsp. l tomato paste. Without cooling, put into sterilized cans in half-liter jars and roll up immediately.

In order to protect the already grown root crops during the second period of the carrot fly's flight, which falls on the beginning of August, I abundantly dust the garden bed with tobacco dust.
Once every two weeks I spill the plantings with a solution of birch tar (I dilute 40 ml of a pharmaceutical preparation in warm water, let it cool down a little).
Between watering with tar solution 1 - 2 times I spill the beds with wormwood infusion. Pour boiling water over a third of a bucket of chopped fresh grass, insist until it cools, filter. I spread the cake between the plants.

At the end of May, when the carrot fly flies most actively, I spray the plants with Prestige diluted according to the instructions.
Throughout the season, after each watering and rain, I loosen the ground, and then dust the bed with a mixture of mustard powder and ground pepper (1: 1).
In addition, twice (in the phase of three or four true leaves and at the end of July) I spread 40 ml of birch tar in a bucket of warm water (I buy it in a pharmacy). I water the carrots under the root at the rate of a bucket of solution for 3 linear meters.
Once every two weeks, pour a bucket of shredded fresh grass of wormwood into boiling water to the top. I insist before cooling, filter. I divide into three parts, each diluted with 8 liters of water. Watering the beds abundantly.
