GEORGINS BY SEEDS - HOW CORRECT?
I really like dahlias, but there is no way to save their tubers annually. Is it realistic to get a flowering plant from seeds in one season?
Olga Ignatushko
- For growing from seeds, border, dwarf varieties of dahlias with a height of 25 to 45 cm are suitable. Such plants bloom before, they are more adapted to local conditions. Seedlings can be sown during March. You can sow directly into the soil in the middle lane in the middle of May, when the earth warms up well. Out of the whole variety of dahlias, for several years now I have been buying seeds of Colaretta Dandy variety - they are of very different colors. They belong to the collar group. The height of the bushes along with flowers is up to 40 cm.
Sowing and care
In the Khabarovsk Territory, sowing seeds in open ground (or planting plants) is possible only in early June. And to enjoy the flowering, you have to grow through seedlings. But I do crops a little later than recommended for the middle STRIP, - in the second half of April.
Pre-soak the seeds in a solution of "Epina" (according to instructions).
I sow in a light soil, for example, mix peat with sand and compost (2: 1: 1). From above crops only slightly sprinkle with earth.
The optimum germination temperature is +20 deg., At lower seeds rot. Shoots appear after 7-10 days.
Watering seedlings rarely, letting the topsoil dry. When two or three real leaves appear, dive seedlings in 10-13 cm pots. I plant seedlings in open ground when the threat of frost passes.
If you sow seeds in greenhouses at the end of April, you can do without picking. Seedlings grown under such conditions are transferred to flower beds at any time - it easily transfers the transplant, since usually by this time it will form a strong, well-branched root system.
Before planting, I put compost and several handfuls of wood ash into the hole. It is better to mulch the soil around the plants with crushed bark or sawdust to protect dahlia sprouts from snails.
BTW
These varieties of dahlias are great for growing in pots and for a small number of them (in the summer the plants will have time to form nodules) you can find a place for wintering in any apartment. For example, put it where you store the potatoes, having previously cut off the aerial part.

ANNUAL DAHELINGS FROM SEEDS

So-called annual dahlias are usually grown from seeds. Their flowering is plentiful and long, it comes much earlier than that of large tuberous dahlias, about two months after sowing. Another feature of them is the compactness of the bushes, the height of which varies depending on the variety from 20 cm to 50 cm. The flowers can be simple, two- or three-row, but always juicy and bright colors. The most popular annual dahlias belong to the Mignon and Merry Fellows groups. They grow well outdoors and as a container plant.
For early flowering, they are grown through seedlings, sowing seeds in March - April. Seedlings dive in the phase of 2-3 true leaves. If the shoots are stretched out, you can deepen them to the first (cotyledonous) leaves.
You can sow the seeds immediately into the ground in mid-May, better - under the film. Plants in this case, although they bloom later, are distinguished by increased resistance to the vagaries of the weather. Sow seeds sparsely, germination is usually good.
Dahlias prefer sunny places with light fertile loams, but they adapt very well to other slightly acidic or neutral loose, fertile soils. From an excess of nitrogen fertilizers, plants fatten and do not bloom. If you feed them, then only potash fertilizers or ash.
The main thing in caring for annual dahlias is the timely removal of seed pods of faded flowers. Then the bushes begin to form even more buds from the side branches.
Root tubers formed during the summer can be dug up in the fall. Until spring, they are well preserved in the basement, then they are divided and grown, like any other dahlias.

HOW I FORM DAHIA BUSHES
In order for dahlias to bloom well, I form the plants immediately after planting.
For plants grown from root tubers, I leave no more than 2 strong shoots.
For cuttings, I leave 1 powerful stem.
If you regularly trim the bushes, the flowers will be much larger.
This must be done from planting in the ground until the buds appear in the leaf axils of the main stems.
To speed up flowering, I pinch the central buds.
To prevent the lower part of the stem from thickening, I remove leaves to a height of 30 cm starting from the end of July - beginning of August.
This contributes to better preservation of tubers.

Dahlias from seeds - how to grow?
I love dahlias very much, but due to lack of space in the soda, I decided to plant annual varieties. One of my favorite varieties is Figaro.
It is not difficult to grow luxurious flowers from seeds. In the spring I buy a bag of Figaro series seed mix. I sow them in April in a greenhouse. In late May - early June, I plant seedlings in a permanent place.
I choose the sunniest place in the garden. I plant immediately in groups along the path. Dahlias of the Figaro series are undersized compact bushes with a large number of inflorescences. Flowers of various colors from snow-white to purple and bright yellow, may be non-uniform. The flowers are large, double and semi-double, bright and very elegant.
Annual dahlias bloom early and delight with beauty until autumn. The Figaro variety is unpretentious and is able to bloom until frost. Care is reduced only to watering, weeding and top dressing.
If desired, in the fall, you can collect your seeds from plants and use them for sowing next year.
Figaro dahlias will thank for their care and delight everyone who loves and appreciates these flowers with their bright colors.

I plant my dahlias in early May. Before planting, I divide the nests - the smaller they are, the larger the flowers will be later.
Then in a bucket I cook a mash of clay, sand and compost (2: 1: 2). Add a cap of sodium humate to it. Consistency - thick sour cream. Delenki dipped in a talker and slightly dried on a wire rack. In the remaining mixture, add water to become liquid, and pour 0 l into each well. Planting dahlias, sprinkle them and mulch the surface with straw.
With this method of planting, I no longer feed the bushes until I dig them, I only water them in the heat.
If ants appear on the tops of young shoots, prepare an infusion of garlic (grind, dilute 1: 1 with water and put in a dark warm place for 10 days). Then I dilute 1 liter of infusion in 5 liters of water and process the bushes.

Last year, I bought a variegated dahlia in a pot on the market. All summer bloomed well. Autumn decided to save the plant. I took it out of the container, but there was not a single tuber, but only thin filiform roots. How is this possible? Why didn’t the tubers form?

- These were annual dahlias. In fact, they are no different from perennials and have a huge number of varieties. They are popularly called "Funny Guys." If you observe the time of sowing seeds and agricultural cultivation, then at the end of the season you can get small tubers. Most likely, your plant simply did not have the strength to form them.
For the future: from annual dahlias, you can collect seeds and sow them in the spring. True, in this case, the color of the petals may differ from the parent color (if the seeds are from a hybrid plant). The flowering of annual dahlias is plentiful and long, occurs much earlier than that of large tuberous dahlias, approximately 50-60 days after sowing the seeds.
If a tuber is formed and you manage to save and plant it in the spring, you will get a dahlia that is fully consistent with the varietal qualities of the mother plant.

Did you know that for the first time dahlias were brought to us from America as a root crop, but our ancestors did not like the underground part of the novelty? But the flowers of the plant were very beautiful, and they began to plant in the gardens. Interestingly, with the potato, everything turned out the other way around: initially it was brought as an ornamental plant, and then the tubers were eaten. But dahlias are good for health - they normalize blood sugar levels.
1 tsp is enough chopped-up (dry) root tubers brew 1 tbsp. boiling water and drink 1/4 tbsp. 4 times a day. It is good to add 2-3 dry bean leaves to this drink. The course is a month and a half. If necessary, after a month, treatment can be repeated.
