Bachkar Honeysuckle - my grades reviews
BACHARKAR HONORITY VARIETIES: TITLE + DESCRIPTION
Honeysuckle is a relatively new culture in our areas. Even I.V. Michurin proposed to grow this plant, which is valuable for its vitamin berries, ripening one of the first. But only in the last couple of decades it has spread widely and has become popular among gardeners. And this happened thanks to the work of breeders in various institutions of Russia. They obtained new high-yielding varieties with tasty, bitterness-free and non-shedding fruits.
The first varieties that we planted on our site are Blue Spindle and Blue Birdobtained at the Research Institute of Horticulture in Siberia named after M.A. Lisavenko from free pollination of the perfect form of Kamchatka honeysuckle. Varieties were one of the best at that time, the berries were large (up to 1-1,3 g), with sweet and sour flesh, but still with the presence of light bitterness. Tasting score of 4,6 points.
I constantly studied and tested new varieties. Berel and Selena, varieties originally from the Research Institute. Lysavenko, were distinguished by a larger berry, but the presence of strong bitterness did not give popularity to these varieties. The berries were only suitable for processing. Volkhov, Morena - varieties of selection VNIIR them. N.I. Vavilova, also in taste with the notes of bitterness present, did not prove themselves to be the best.
Sorts Slastena Kamchatka Research Institute of Agriculture and Early (author L.P. Kuminov, Moscow region) were distinguished by good taste with a rating of 4,8-5 points and the absence of bitterness in the fruits. The leader in terms of taste, yield, berry size, and unshedging fruit on our site was the Bazhovskaya variety. The variety was obtained at the South Ural Research Institute of Horticulture and Potato.
The small compact bushes of this variety during fruiting look very beautiful, the branches bend from large blue berries weighing 1,2-1,8 g. The fruits are round-elongated or even cylindrical, with a tuberous surface, dark blue. The pulp is tender, sweet, dessert taste. The variety is winter-hardy, heat-resistant, high-yielding. The variety was almost perfect, we were the leader, but only until the time when new varieties from Tomsk arrived to us (FSUE Bakcharskoye).
The first fruiting of beginners and tasting of berries made an indescribable impression. The berries turned out to be so high in taste that after them the berries of the variety Bazhovskaya could be considered bitter. Soon, unusually productive and large-fruited varieties of Bakchar selection, we began to affectionately call "Bakchariks."
When we decided to test varieties from Bakchar, the first question arose where to get planting material. Better, of course, with the author - this will eliminate cheating in grades, and it will be cheaper than with dealers. Having written to the Bakcharskoye scientific institution, we received an answer that seedlings in the spring can be obtained only when sent by a transport company. In our area, the nearest shopping center, where you could pick up seedlings, is 70 km away, not far, but you can’t do this for the sake of the cherished varieties.
We met a parcel from Bakchar and waited for the TK car on the indicated day until evening. Finally got a load - a few bags with huge bushes. On the way, the honeysuckle buds bloomed, and etiolated shoots grew in the dark. The packaging, of course, was not very tricky, the roots were wrapped in film and covered with slightly moist sawdust, which crumpled, and the roots were bare. But despite this, all the seedlings were alive and looked great. Documents were attached to all varieties, which is rare in our time.
We have acquired the following Bakchar varieties: Bakcharsky giant, Daughter of a giant, Siberian girl, Strezhevchanka, Pride of Bakchar, Narymskaya, Bakcharsky anniversary, Sylginka, Chulymskaya and numbered prospective forms 11-5-20, 3-8-16, 1-4-9, 11-7-36.
New pets were planted all day. A little rotted humus and wood ash were added to the dug holes and well watered. Some seedlings were large and came to us already with buds, so in the first year we were able to try and evaluate the taste of the fruit. In the second year, flowering and fruiting were observed already on plants of all varieties and number forms.
Variety Bakcharsky giant lived up to its name: bushes compared with others are the highest, with thick shoots. In the first year, while the seedlings took root, the berries were not so large, but from the second year the bushes were completely covered with large (from a matchbox!) Berries that are visible from afar. Their weight averaged 1,8-2,5 g. The pulp is very juicy, sweet and sour, without bitterness, dessert taste. I personally praised their taste on the solid five.
Giant's daughter is another masterpiece of Bakchar selection. Parents of the variety are the selective form of the turchaninov honeysuckle and the variety Bakcharsky giant. The giant's daughter absorbed the best qualities of her parents: a large berry of dessert flavor, annual and plentiful fruiting. This variety has an extended ripening of berries, which can be attributed to both disadvantages and advantages, because this prolongs the period of consumption of fresh berries.
Varieties Pride Bakchara and Bakcharskaya Jubilee showed the same qualities on our site. The berries are large (1,8-2,4 g), excellent taste. But the shape of the berries is different: at the Pride of Bakchar they are fusiform, slightly curved, and at the Bakcharsky anniversary - elongated-oval.
Variety Strezhevchanka differs from others in the standard form of the bush and very large berries (3 g). They are wide-veiled-shaped, with a slight waxy coating, which makes them appear almost black. Early ripening, friendly. It is worth noting the excellent taste of berries and high productivity. It is convenient to pick berries, they do not crumble.
Silginka in general plantings stands out with very large one-dimensional berries, pleasant, sweet and refreshing in taste. It is convenient to collect them because of the peculiarities of the bush: it is medium thickened, rounded, medium spread. The disadvantages include weak attachment of berries.
Varieties Sibiryachka, Narymskaya, Chulymskaya in many ways are similar. Berries weighing 0,9-1,3 g. But the Sibiryachka variety is distinguished by early ripeness and one-dimensional sweet fruits, and Chulymskaya because ripe berries hang for a long time without crumbling.
The four license plates that we purchased are similar in quality to the best Bakchar varieties. Forms 3-8-16 and 11 -7-3 6 differ in that the fruits are not covered by leaves, it is very convenient when harvesting. Form 1-4-9 stood out by the friendly ripening of berries, which are easily separated from the stem when ripe, so that the crop can be harvested by shaking. We spread the material around the bush, tilt the bush a little and shake it, the berries are poured onto the fabric - and that’s all, the crop is harvested! True, then you still have to sort out the berries from the leaves that fell to them. Form 11-5-20 is distinguished by early ripening and large fruits of a wide pear-shaped form. When fully ripened, the fruits are very sweet, judged to taste on a solid five. The berries are tightly attached, which means that picking is possible only by hand.
It can be summarized that number plates differ in large berries of dessert flavor, high yields (on average 3,2-3,5 kg from an adult bush), good winter and heat resistance. For better pollination, it is better to plant at least 3-4 varieties on the site.

HAPPY: DELIGHT, LAMB AND OTHERS (ADDED 10.06.2021/XNUMX/XNUMX)
Honeysuckle is one of the first berries to ripen in our plots. And if you remember that breeders have bred its amazing varieties - Large-fruited, sweet, then planting this culture on your site is simply necessary.
Today we will talk about the new products brought out at the Bakcharsky stronghold of northern gardening (Tomsk) and at VNIIS im. I. V. Michurina (Michurinsk).
Bakchar varieties are known all over the world, our gardeners adore them for their very large berries, high yield, and winter hardiness. Here are some novelties of recent years, which have been introduced at the Bakcharsky stronghold of northern gardening - the Giant's Daughter, Delight, Strezhevchanka, Uslada, Avalanche, Aquamarine (No. 5-12-80). These are the latest generation varieties with very large berries (the average weight exceeds 1 g, and the largest reaches 5 g).
Delight. Included in the State Register in 2020 Mid-early. Vigorous bush (1, 8 m), rounded. The berries are very large (average weight 1, 6 g, maximum 2, 8 g), broadly spindle-shaped, dense, almost black with a very strong waxy bloom, which makes them appear gray. The taste is harmonious, sweet and sour, without bitterness. The skin is dense, the transportability of the berries is high. The annual yield is high, 3, 5-5, 5 kg per bush.
Daughter of the Giant. The variety has been included in the State Register of Russia since 2017. Medium late. The bush is high, medium dense. Young shoots and barely opened leaves are colored red - this distinguishes the variety from others. The berries are pear-shaped, curved at the base (resemble a comma in shape), very large (average weight 1 g, maximum up to 8 g), dark purple, with a strong waxy bloom. Dessert taste, sweet and sour. Productivity 2, 5 - 3 kg per bush.
Strezhevchanka. The variety has been included in the State Register of Russia since 2017. The average ripening period. The bush is medium-sized, medium-spreading. The berries are very large (average weight 1, 8 g, maximum 2, 7 g), broadly spindle-shaped, with a weak waxy bloom, which makes them appear almost black. Ripening is very early, amicable. The taste of the berries is sweet and sour, the skin is thin, the transportability is average. The berries are very convenient for picking because of the straight sparse branches, they do not crumble. Productivity 3, 5-4, 5 kg per bush.
Delight. Submitted for state testing in 2017. Medium late variety. The bush is medium-sized, of medium density. The berries are large (average weight 1, 7 g, maximum 3, 5 g), broadly spindle-shaped, slightly flattened, with a dense skin. Dessert taste, sweet (4, 9 points). This is one of the sweetest varieties. The average yield at 10 years of age is 3 kg per bush, the maximum - 5 kg per bush.
Avalanche. Submitted for state testing in 2017. The bush is high, medium dense. The branches are straight, long berries seem to flow down the branches, hence the name L4 *
cultivars. The fruits are very large (average weight 1, 7 g, maximum - 2, 3 g), cylindrical, dense. Dessert taste, sweet and sour (4, 8 points), early ripening, amicable. Productivity 3-4, 7 kg per bush. The berries do not crumble.
Aquamarine. It is undergoing state tests. It stands out for its high yield, very large (up to 3 g) and very sweet dessert berries.
They are dense, transportable. The bush is well pollinated and sets fruit even in unfavorable years.
When planting honeysuckle, you need to remember that flowers and berries are formed at the ends of the shoots, and if they are planted too close, they are shaded, interfere with each other, as a result, the yield decreases. Therefore, the distance between the bushes should be at least 1 m 20 cm.
In Michurinsk, work with honeysuckle was started in 1980 by introducing breeding forms from the Bakcharsky support point. On their basis, the first forms were created, which serve as the foundation for the creation of modern varieties. One of the main problems for honeysuckle in the Tambov region is the lingering warm autumn. Frosts usually begin only in December, and before that - freezing temperatures, sometimes up to 10 °. This leads to re-flowering of some varieties, and this, in turn, to the loss of the next year's harvest. The most susceptible to repeated blooming are the Blue Spindle, Kamchadalka, Chulymskaya, Bakchar-sky giant, Koketka varieties.
The shedding rate of fruits is another important factor that determines the frequency of harvesting. The varieties Blue Spindle, Blue Bird, Nymph, Fire Opal, Narymskaya are especially susceptible to it. For them, this figure reaches 40%.
Let's list some of the new varieties that are undergoing state testing.
Michurinskaya Lada. Early ripening. The bush is medium-sized, spreading. The berries are large (average fruit weight is 1, 3 g), fusiform, blue, with a sweet dessert taste. Do not crumble. Productivity 4-4, 5 kg per bush. Winter hardiness is high.
Young lady. Medium late ripening (under Michurinsk conditions it ripens around June 10). The bush is medium-sized, medium-spreading. The berries are cylindrical, large (weighing an average of 1, 4 g), sweet with sourness. Do not crumble. Productivity 2 kg per bush.
Eternal Call. Early ripening. Already in the 4th year, it yields 1 kg per bush. Adult bushes - 3-5 kg per bush. The bush is medium-sized, spreading. The berries are pitcher-shaped, large (4, 1 g), sweet. The crumbling rate is weak and only in some years. However, no repeated autumn flowering was revealed. Winter hardiness is high.
Bow to Siberia. Early ripening. The bush is weak, spreading. The berries are jug-shaped, large (1, 3 g), dessert taste. No crumbling. Productivity up to 3 kg per bush. Winter hardiness is high.
Peter the First. Large-fruited variety for amateur gardening. Early ripening. The bush is medium-sized, slightly spreading. The berries are pitcher-shaped, purple, weighing 1, 4 g, sweet and sour. Productivity 2, 5-2, 7 kg per bush. Falling off and autumn flowering are absent. Winter hardiness is high.
Northern Lights. Large-fruited and early-growing variety. Early ripening. The bush is medium-sized, spreading. Berries are fusiform, purple, weighing 1, 4 g, sweet-sour with bitterness. Productivity 2-5 kg per bush. No crumbling. Winter hardiness is high.
Michurinskoe miracle. Early ripening (under Michurinsk conditions it ripens on May 25). The bush is vigorous, erect. Berries are fusiform, dark blue with a waxy coating, large (average weight 1 g). Sweet, aromatic. Productivity 5, 3-4 kg per bush, weak shedding. Winter hardiness is high.
Antoshka (entered in the State Register in 2019). Early ripening. The bush is medium-sized, slightly spreading. The berries are barrel-shaped, dark blue with a waxy bloom, weighing 1, 3 g, sweet, with aroma. Productivity 3-3, 5 kg per bush. There is no crumbling. Winter hardiness is high.

Selection and study of honeysuckle is conducted at the University of Canada in the province of Saskatchewan, where in 1999 he became a professor Robert Bore. It was he who began active work on attracting source material for selection, the selection itself and a set of works to study this new culture for Canada.
The main work was aimed at creating varieties with a deep dormant period and, most importantly, at obtaining varieties suitable for picking berries mechanically. In a relatively short period, Bors managed to obtain several varieties with the stated requirements (for comparison - in Baksk FSUE “Bakcharskoe”, selection has been conducted for more than 50 years, and honeysuckle plantings occupy more than 50 hectares). What pleased Canadian scientists for such a short period?
New varieties from Canada Tundra, Aurora, Boreal and Indigo series began to be widely advertised. Nurseries offer their seedlings to gardeners. I note right away that all varieties are characterized by later than usual flowering and fruiting.
The main goal was to obtain honeysuckle with a long period of rest. As you know, Russian varieties when grown in the southern regions in the autumn period again begin to grow and bloom, which, of course, then affects the next year's crop. Canadians managed to obtain varieties with a long dormant period suitable for cultivation in the southern regions. The fruiting of these varieties occurs in late July - early August.
