WATERING THE GARDEN: 5 IMPORTANT RULES
- Ivanovna, here’s how it turns out for you - you water cucumbers once a week, but they never bitter, don't wither? Probably found a cunning variety?
- Variety, Petrovna, I have the most common - Rodnichok. And in order to less often water the cucumber bed, when planting seedlings in each hole, I throw 1 tsp. hydrogel and mix it well with the ground.
Here's a dialogue of neighbors I had the opportunity to hear on the way to the country. The trick with hydrogel is really working, but there are other important irrigation rules that allow you to grow rich crops and use water economically.
So that the plants do not suffer from thirst, after watering, make sure that the earth is moistened to a depth of 20 cm
1. BETTER SHARE YES ABLE
Water the beds abundantly, but not too often - once every few days (or when the soil becomes too dry). Abundant watering helps plants to develop the root system and better cope with a lack of moisture. And frequent, but scarce watering stimulates the growth of roots closer to the soil surface.
Therefore, in the event of a drought, plants suffer more and may die.
OUR REFERENCE
Lack of moisture affects young, recently transplanted plants, seedlings, container and moisture-loving crops worst of all.
But excessive irrigation violates the structure of the soil, wash out nutrients from it, and can become a trigger for fungal diseases.
2. PREPARING FOR WATERING
To get the maximum result from watering, properly care for the beds:
- weed;
- loosen;
- cut grooves between the rows;
- form along the perimeter of the ridges small earthen rollers that will hold the water and prevent it from flowing onto the tracks.
3. NOT ALL WATER IS SUITABLE FOR IRRIGING PLANTS
Water for irrigation should be clean, without turbidity, odor and rust, with a neutral or slightly acidic reaction.
Rainwater is ideal: it is saturated with oxygen, and if there are no busy roads or hazardous industries nearby, it will be clean and soft. To collect it, substitute the barrels under the drainpipes that descend from the roofs of the dacha and household buildings.
If you water the site with water from a column or water supply system, first let it stand and heat up. To soften and clean the container, add peat (100 g per 10 l of water). Do not pour sediment on the beds.
4. TEMPERATURE MATTERS
Greens, root vegetables, cabbage, potatoes, fruit, berry and ornamental crops are not afraid of cool water.
Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, beets like water, warmed up to + 18 ... + 20 degrees.
TIP: If there is no warm water, but you need to water the garden, do it in the afternoon. Pour water in a thin stream exclusively on the ground around the plants (not on the leaves and away from the root neck). Passing through warm soil, the water warms up and does not harm the roots.
But cucumbers, zucchini, pumpkins, melons need even warmer water (+25 deg.). After a cold shower, they can stop growing. In addition, nutrients from the soil are poorly soluble in cold water, and plants starve.
5. TIME FOR WATERING
Plants should not be watered at hot noon: sunburns may appear on the leaves (moisture droplets remaining on the leaves will work like lenses);
- and the moisture evaporates too quickly, never reaching the roots;
- Due to the large difference in air and water temperature, a physiological shock may develop in plants.
Vegetables in the open field are best watered in the region of 16-17 hours, when the earth begins to cool, and water easily penetrates the soil. In addition, moisture evaporates more slowly in the evening.
It is better to water greenhouse plants in the morning, so that at night there is no excessive moisture and condensation in the greenhouse, which, when flowing onto plants, can cause illness.

WATERING AND USEFUL Tricks
To reduce the frequency and volume of watering, when spring or autumn digging of the garden, as well as when planting seedlings, be sure to make rotted manure or compost. The more organic matter in the earth, the better moisture is retained.
Mulch the beds. To prevent moisture from evaporating, a layer of mulch with a thickness of 5 cm is enough.
Plant the plants closely, leaving only the space necessary for root development between them. Adjoining leaves do not allow moisture to evaporate so actively, and the earth to dry out.
If it is not possible to organize drip irrigation or often water the garden, when planting seedlings, add moisture-retaining granules or gel to the wells (you can incorporate them into the soil around the plants if they are already planted).

WATER TYPES
Landing and after landing - for survival of plants after sowing seeds and transplanting seedlings.
All - to restore moisture in the soil during growth.
Feeding - for fertilizer in dissolved form.
Refreshing - for humidification in dry, hot weather.
Antifreeze - with the threat of freezing.
NOTICE: CUCUMBERS WITHOUT BIT
So that cucumbers do not become bitter due to lack of moisture, I dig up a PET bottle with a neck down 7-10 cm from each bush without a stopper and a bottom. First, water the cucumbers under the root (10-15 liters per 5-6 plants), then pour 1-2 liters of water into each bottle. Moisture is slowly absorbed by the roots - and cucumbers feel great!

EXPRESS COUNCIL
If it’s hot in the greenhouse, I water the tracks with cold water from a hose (I try not to spray the plants). In addition, I pour water for 5-7 minutes and the walls of the greenhouse outside. This helps to quickly lower the air temperature.
