August in the garden: basic work

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO IN A GARDEN IN AUGUST
The hot season comes after the July respite. Most of the time is taken by the harvest. But don't forget about other things as well. Here is a short list of major jobs.
SOWING SIDERATES.
In a large garden at the beginning of the month, it's time to sow white mustard between rows (about 50 g of seeds per hundred square meters). After 45-50 days, cut the aboveground part and embed it in the soil. This excellent organic fertilizer will not only enrich the land with nutrition, but will also prevent the appearance of pests and diseases.
WE PUT SUPPORTS.
In August, branches bend under the weight of the harvest and often break. Therefore, in the first days of the month, install the subtrees of the spear (if you have not done this earlier).
COLLECTING THE WALLET.
The carrion, like rotten fruits, is a source of infection, therefore, collect all affected fruits from the branches on the fruit trees. Remove fruits from the ground as well. Spraying trees of varieties of autumn and winter ripening in early August (but no later than 20 days before fruit ripening) with a solution of urea (0 g per 5 l of water) will help against scab and fruit rot during storage.
CARE OF CURRANT AND GOSEBERRY.
During the collection of berries, branches often break, and some shoots, overloaded with fruits, lie on the ground and do not return to a vertical state. Remove all such branches at the root after harvest. Do not forget about protective treatments: against fungal diseases, use a fungicide (Topaz, Title), against pests - an insecticide (Actellik, Fufanon).
FEEDING IN AUGUST.
In the first decade of the month, feed the fertile bushes. Dissolve 15-20 g of superphosphate and 12-15 g of potassium sulfate in a bucket of water and pour 1 liters under young plants (up to 5 years old) and 5 liters under bushes over 2 years old. For plants that are now bearing fruit (raspberries, blackberries, gumi, dogwood), the doses of these fertilizers can be reduced, respectively, to 5-12 and 15-8 g per bucket of water. Application rate: for young plants - 10 liter per bush, for adults - 1 liters for each.

IRRIGATION.
Fruiting crops need to recuperate, therefore additional irrigation is needed in a drought (spend at least 1 liters of water per 35 square meter).

In August, pay attention to ...
Root shoots
It can be found in chokeberry, irgi, barberry, rose hips and other shrubs. These shoots take food and waste the plant's energy. Cut them as close to the soil surface as possible.
Fallen first leaves
They are most likely infected with fungal diseases. Rake and burn such leaves every 3-4 days.
Shoots
In rainy and warm August, excess moisture, combined with a rather high temperature, can cause secondary shoot growth. But they will not have time to woody, ripen and freeze in winter. Pinch the tops of these shoots (thereby removing the growing point). At the same time, remove the layer of mulch if you managed to lay it in the bite zone. It will be possible to return the mulch to its original place as soon as the soil is sufficiently dry.
Weeds
Approximately in the middle of the month, it is effective to weed the bush zones and loosen the soil, after which the surface is covered with compost (peat) with a layer of 1 - 2 cm - and, with a high degree of probability, there will be no weeds this season.

Food - directly to the roots
In August, I feed the fruit trees with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers. I do not give nitrogen: it can provoke the growth of a plant that will die in winter.
In order for the fertilizers to immediately reach the roots, I make holes 50 cm deep around each tree in the crown projection (for this I use a piece of reinforcement and a hammer). 8 holes per plant. I pour granular fertilizer into them (in accordance with the instructions on the package) and pour water on top.

We collect apples
Apple picking begins. Each variety is harvested strictly on time - reminds Doctor of Agricultural Sciences Mikhail SHEVCHUK.
- I noticed that some gardeners do not know when to harvest. Take an apple in your hand and turn it on the stalk. If the fruit separates easily from the branch, it's time! At the same time, apples with a stalk are stored longer. I put them in wicker baskets or wooden boxes with the stems down (but pears - up). If the fruits begin to wither during storage, I advise you to put a jar of water next to it. And in case of excess moisture - a jar of calcium chloride, which will absorb excess moisture.

In August, cut out root shoots, vertical shoots in the upper part of the lowered crowns of apple, pear, sweet cherry, plum. Partially cut off vigorous shoots of sweet cherry and plum (up to 1 m or more), appearing after crown reduction, and bend the rest to a position close to horizontal.
