DECORATIVE WILLOWS - WEAVING AND WYKING
I can't remember when we paid attention to these plants. Probably planting a Japanese Iwu Matsudana... The twisted low trunk, olive bark, graceful silvery foliage - everything in it was beautiful.
Then the collection was added Hakuro Nishiki with white-pinkish leaves, also from the Japanese, then a miniature spherical Caspian Nana, another ball - a species, up to 4 m in height, popularly called self-haircuts for an even hemisphere. The real hobby came after meeting the plants of the remarkable Sverdlovsk breeder Veniamin Ivanovich Shaburov. For more than half a century, he bred frost-resistant ornamental varieties of willows, calling them "hybrid". You can divide them (very conditionally) into twisting, stunted and weeping.
I'll start with the grade Sverdlovsk winding-2. Similar to matsudana, but more hardy and with gray bark. Low (up to 4 m), with fancifully twisted branches, it evokes unreal fabulous sensations. And here is our favorite Weeping Gnome in fact, not so small, on good soil it stretched 5 m. The sparse weeping crown is so graceful that it would look amazing not only in our barn, but also in the palace. Weeping branches 3-4 meters long hang down to the ground, we cut them according to our imagination. The low ones include Willow Superior Schwerin... It is also called bamboo for long (up to 20 cm) narrow leaves. The willow variety in Memory of Mindovsky promises to grow taller (V.L. Mindovsky is a famous Russian forester, colleague and friend of Shaburov). At the age of 7, she became a tree already 5 m high with a beautiful, compact crown that tends to the sun and reddish-yellow shoots that show weeping with age. From this variety came an even taller variety, named by its followers in honor of the breeder - in Memory of Shaburov.
Willow varieties Waterfall obtained in a complex hybrid combination from free pollination of willow
In memory of Mindovsky. A tree up to 12-14 m in height, with a straight, pronounced trunk and weak growth of lateral branches, forming a narrow crown with strongly weeping branches. The willow grows quickly, weeping shoots appear at the age of 2-3 years. Resistant to diseases and pests. Will look good in both single and group planting, also suitable for creating alleys.
Willow of the Fantazia variety is one of the most beautiful willows of Shaburov's selection. The tree is up to 12 m in height, with a wide low-branching trunk, strong branches form a spreading wide-rounded crown. A trunk with a beautiful textured bark - and in contrast to it, a rounded openwork crown. This willow is very delicate like lace! Cascading shoots, the foliage is small, crescent, light green with a bluish tinge. Does not shed foliage for a long time in autumn. Looks beautiful in a single fit.
In addition to the Shaburov varieties, one cannot fail to say about the Babylonian willow variety Crisp, unusually mysterious and beautiful. Shrub or small tree up to 2 m with a conical crown. It is very original for its long (up to 10 cm) steeply spiral leaves. They are green above, gray-gray below. They resemble ram horns in shape. In severe winters, shoots freeze over, but then they quickly grow again
Finally, without exaggeration, our "golden" pearl is the Sakhalin willow Golden Sunshine, a French variety. A fast-growing shrub with a loose crown up to 4-5 m. The leaves are narrow, shiny, golden.
The foliage is intensely yellow all season long, does not burn in the sun. This compares favorably with flowering shrubs, attractive only during the flowering period. Can be tapeworm, good for mass plantings and hedges, and as a great gold backdrop for plants with dark green or purple foliage. Does not suffer from pruning and pests.
In general, willows are very plastic, hardy and can withstand any haircut and pruning, bouquet planting and vaccinations in any of the most fancy options. They will create beauty, comfort and space for creativity.
DEFINING EXPECTATIONS
Not all willows are tolerant of waterlogging, some species cannot stand it. For example, Ural winding we were oppressed during the flood.
Japanese matsudana turned out to be not so hardy.
After one of the harsh winters, the tree died. Despite the widespread opinion, some varieties (in memory of Mindovsky, in memory of Shaburov) still do not tolerate summer transplantation well.
IMPORTANT Tricks
Tall willow varieties require stem formation... To do this, when planting, we dig in a support (column, stake or reinforcement) to the seedling and tie the plant to it for 3-4 years. To thicken the trunk during the period of sap flow (May), we make a furrow of the bark of the trunk with risks of 5-7 cm at short intervals. This simple technique quickly increases the thickness of the stem.
