WHAT TO DO IN THE GARDEN IN THE BEGINNING OF AUTUMN?
WORK IN THE GARDEN IN THE BEGINNING OF AUTUMN - TIPS OF A SPECIALIST
In September, by tradition, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences Valery MATVEEV summarizes the results of the summer cottage season.
It also reminds you what is important to do in the garden in the near future.
- What was this season like? We have written more than once about an abnormally warm winter. As for spring, in early May, when the trees began to bloom, there was a powerful cold snap. There were no frosts, but the night temperature dropped to 0 degrees, and the daytime did not exceed + 10 degrees. Such conditions have reduced the activity of aerobic soil microorganisms, which are the basis of soil fertility, good growth and development of plants. As a result, the trees were deficient in nitrogen. This led to the loss of ovaries at the end of May (primarily on stone fruit crops and apple trees). The situation was aggravated by subsequent rains, causing an outbreak of scab on weakened apple trees and pears. All this, of course, reduced the quality of the crop.
In general, berry and fruit of early varieties this season ripened at least 10 days later, although in summer conditions for the growth and development of plants were not bad.
What kind of work should gardeners have in September?
- Remove late-ripening apples and pears in time. And sprinkle berries and cherries, cherries, plums, apricots, peaches with a solution of fungicide (Horus, Abiga-Peak, azophos - according to the instructions). At the end of leaf fall, everyone is required to eradicate treatment with a solution of ammonium nitrate (1 kg per 10 liters of water) or urea (700-800 g per 10 liters of water) - too much infection has accumulated due to the warm winter and humid summer.
Until now, gardeners doubt whether it is worth digging up the tree-trunk circles of fruit trees in autumn ...
—Dug up the soil under the planted plants until they begin to bear fruit. There should be no weeds in the near-trunk strip! Under fruit-bearing trees, it is enough to cut down the grass.
There is a nuance: if in September you plan to feed the fruit-bearing garden with rotted manure (compost), make sure to bring it under digging - 6-8 kg per 1 sq.m. Phosphate-potassium fertilizers can be embedded in the soil for loosening - 15 g of superphosphate and 20-25 g of potassium chloride.
Is it worth stocking up on seedlings in advance?
- Do not buy or plant plants before the end of September! Otherwise, you risk getting an immature seedling that will not survive the winter. But if you are not ready yet, dig the planting holes right now: on loams - 60 cm wide and deep, on a clayey area the diameter will be larger - 80 cm, and on the sand, make them 80 cm deep.

WORK IN THE GARDEN IN THE BEGINNING OF AUTUMN - TIPS OF GARDENERS
After harvesting in the garden ...
On harvested trees, cut any broken, withered, and diseased branches into a ring if necessary. Cover the slices with garden pitch.
Remember to remove the props. Disinfect before storing them.
… And in the vineyard Spray the grape bushes with a solution of ferrous sulfate (300 g per 10 liters of water) to destroy the fungal infection. For the same purpose, rake and remove fallen leaves from the vineyard.
Oleg BUYNOVSKY, agronomist, Minsk
How to plant raspberries
For autumn planting, plant raspberries so that the root collar is only 2-3 cm deep. The shoots forming a bush develop from large basal buds, which must be protected: they break off easily. Do not compact the soil under the plantings too much: if the root buds are damaged or deeply buried, the fruiting of the bush may be delayed for a year.

For the winter hardiness of actinidia
After harvesting, for better ripening of the shoots and increasing their winter hardiness, feed the actinidia with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers - fill in the trunk circle with 20 g of double superphosphate and potassium sulfate. After that, mulch the soil under the plant with compost or rotted manure up to a layer of 10 cm.

About the landing pits
For the autumn planting of fruit plants, the pits are prepared a month and a half before the procedure, and for the spring - in the fall. In the latter case, the pits left uncovered for the winter are filled with water after the snow melts, and it will not be possible to plant anything in them in the early spring on dense soil. Therefore, before freezing, fill such holes with well-fertilized soil, without compacting. In the spring, all that remains is to arrange small holes in them, convenient for placing the roots of seedlings, and plant them.

If you spot a tick
Have you noticed gall mite damage on pears this season? Treat the crowns in September with sulfur preparations or a remedy for ticks like Vertimeka (according to the instructions).
