Is it true that viburnum attracts pests to the garden?
KALINA IN THE SITE AND PESTS
Many summer residents are afraid to plant red viburnum: it is believed that it attracts pests to the garden. And I really love this plant - for its beauty and benefits!
The best soil for viburnum is moist fertile loam or black soil without stagnant water. The bush grows quickly, and already in the 3rd year the first fruits appear.
Kalina loves moisture, so in the summer-autumn period I water it regularly. Once every three years in the fall, I feed the shrub with a mixture of 4 kg of compost, 50 g of superphosphate, 30 g of potassium salt and 200 g of lime (I put it in the soil). In early spring, to increase the yield, I add 30 g of ammonium nitrate when loosening the soil around the bush, and during the flowering period I add 10 tablespoon of water for irrigation to 1 liters. complex fertilizer Potassium humate.
The crown of the shrub began to form from the first year after planting - I left 5-6 branches of different ages, and then I remove the lateral shoots, old and damaged branches.
To protect against pests, since spring, once a month, I spray the plant with a proven folk remedy - 50 g of tobacco and grated laundry soap per 10 liters of water. I cut and burn all dried shoots and flower stalks.
There is such a secret with berries: after the first frosts, viburnum becomes sweeter and excess bitterness leaves.

PESTS OF KALINA SPECIALIST COMMENT
Kalina, of course, is appreciated not only for food, but also for medicinal and decorative properties.
But, unfortunately, the culture, like many other fruit crops, suffers from pests (first of all, from the viburnum leaf beetle, rose leaf roll and aphids).
Apparently, this was the reason for the prejudice of gardeners towards viburnum. But do not rush to abandon the plant, because you can successfully fight aphids. Treat with an insecticide solution (Actellik, Fufanon, Kinmiks) in the spring before flowering or immediately after. During the period of setting and ripening of berries, use Fitoverm, Bitoxibacillin (they are effective against both the larvae of the viburnum leaf beetle, and against the caterpillars of the rose leafworm).

Last spring, a young viburnum almost died at the dacha - all the branches ate the caterpillars. Tell me how to treat the plant this season so that the situation does not repeat itself? On several mature bushes, the berries wither and dry prematurely. How to preserve the harvest?

- Ha a young plant, most likely. The viburnum leaf beetle "feasted", the larvae of which gnaw out the leaves that began to grow and young shoots. It is important to treat the viburnum from the pest before flowering, in May, on the leaves with a complex insecticide, for example, "Fufanon" (according to the instructions). The drug quickly decomposes and, having destroyed the leaf beetle, will not adversely affect pollinating insects, which will then fly to the inflorescences.
You can use systemic drugs "Aktaru", "Confidor", but then the treatment is carried out earlier, in April (especially if it is not possible to often come to the country). This will provide plants with protection for up to 20 days.
In the spring, as soon as the sun warms up, aphids can attack the viburnum - the pest feasts on the juices of young growing shoots and leaves, which then deform, curl, dry out. Preparations for treatments are the same, but it is worth paying attention to the fight against ants - due to their fault, aphids are spreading in the garden. If there is not much of it on the bushes, do not get carried away with chemistry, but simply remove the affected shoots with a pruner. But you should not ignore it: due to the fault of these insects, the plant may bloom worse next year.
An adult specimen of viburnum probably suffered from fruit rot. To protect against it in early spring, before the foliage bloom, treat the bushes with Bordeaux mixture, HOM or Abiga-peak. If signs of the disease often appeared earlier (a lot of crops have already been lost in previous years), spray the crown after flowering over the ovary again with the same copper-containing preparations.

Many gardeners refuse viburnum, because it is difficult to get rid of the viburnum leaf beetle. Difficult, but possible, and in winter. Examine the bush carefully and cut out all the tops of the branches on which the egg-laying is clearly visible. In the spring, before the beginning of the growing season, it remains only to do one preventive spraying with an insecticide (Fufa-non, Actellik). And plant a couple of borago plants under the viburnum bushes.
