Last spring, a young viburnum almost died at the dacha - all the branches ate the caterpillars. Tell me how to treat the plant this season so that the situation does not repeat itself? On several mature bushes, the berries wither and dry prematurely. How to preserve the harvest?

      - Ha a young plant, most likely. The viburnum leaf beetle "feasted", the larvae of which gnaw out the leaves that began to grow and young shoots. It is important to treat the viburnum from the pest before flowering, in May, on the leaves with a complex insecticide, for example, "Fufanon" (according to the instructions). The drug quickly decomposes and, having destroyed the leaf beetle, will not adversely affect pollinating insects, which will then fly to the inflorescences.

You can use systemic drugs "Aktaru", "Confidor", but then the treatment is carried out earlier, in April (especially if it is not possible to often come to the country). This will provide plants with protection for up to 20 days.
In the spring, as soon as the sun warms up, aphids can attack the viburnum - the pest feasts on the juices of young growing shoots and leaves, which then deform, curl, dry out. Preparations for treatments are the same, but it is worth paying attention to the fight against ants - due to their fault, aphids are spreading in the garden. If there is not much of it on the bushes, do not get carried away with chemistry, but simply remove the affected shoots with a pruner. But you should not ignore it: due to the fault of these insects, the plant may bloom worse next year.

An adult specimen of viburnum probably suffered from fruit rot. To protect against it in early spring, before the foliage bloom, treat the bushes with Bordeaux mixture, HOM or Abiga-peak. If signs of the disease often appeared earlier (a lot of crops have already been lost in previous years), spray the crown after flowering over the ovary again with the same copper-containing preparations.

Many gardeners refuse viburnum, because it is difficult to get rid of the viburnum leaf beetle. Difficult, but possible, and in winter. Examine the bush carefully and cut out all the tops of the branches on which the egg-laying is clearly visible. In the spring, before the beginning of the growing season, it remains only to do one preventive spraying with an insecticide (Fufa-non, Actellik). And plant a couple of borago plants under the viburnum bushes.
