Cutting roses before winter

CUTTING ROSES IN AUTUMN
I will share the method of cutting roses in autumn, which we have been using for more than one year. And the result is always excellent - almost 100% survival rate.
PREPARATION OF SHEARS
For cuttings, we use shoots after pruning the bushes at the end of September - October. We do not take very young or old branches: they have little chance to take root.
We immediately put the cut branches in the water (keep a bucket of water close at hand). Otherwise, an airlock will form in the lower part of the shoot, which will prevent the plant from fully “drinking” water.
We remove the leaves, leave the thorns. Branches can stand in the water for several days (but in a cool place!).
Cut the cuttings in water with a thin pruner.
Cut from the middle part, where the stems are still green, but already partially lignified. We make the lower cut at an angle of 45 degrees, under the kidney at a distance of 2-3 mm. The upper one is even (we retreat from the third kidney from the bottom 1-1, 5 cm). We take it out of the water and immediately seal it with garden pitch.
In the lower part of the cuttings (above the lower bud and on the sides of it), we make 3-4 scratches with an awl 4-6 mm long and immerse the ends in water with the addition of a root formation stimulator for two days.

PREPARATION OF THE BLACKWOOD
Having knocked down a box from wooden planks (to strengthen the walls of the future cuticle from landslides), we dig a hole under it about a depth of a shovel's bayonet (width and length about 1 - 1, 2 m). We lower the box into it, fill the voids outside with earth.
Pour a mixture of forest soil, sand, manure humus and peat into the cuttings (everything - by eye). As a result, the substrate should be fairly loose, but not too light. We water it well.
POISONING ROSES
We immerse the cuttings in moist soil at a distance of 5-10 cm from each other, deepening the lower bud by about 2 cm.Then we completely fill the plants with dry leaves (do not tamp!) To the top.
SHELTER OF ROSE SHEARS FOR WINTER
As soon as sub-zero temperature occurs, cover the cuttings. We put on it a kind of lattice (we have a grid from the back of the refrigerator), and on it - a film with a thickness of 150-200 microns, the edges of which we press to the ground with stones.
If the sun is shining during the day and the temperature rises to + 10 degrees, then for ventilation we move the film to the side (otherwise, at high temperatures, the leaves may begin to rot).
In cooler weather, in the absence of constant frost, we simply open the edge of the film for minimal ventilation.
With a significant cold snap, we still put the old carpet on top of the film (you can also use a span-bond). With heavy snowfall, additional cover may not be needed.
IN NEW SEASON
In the spring we open the cuttings gradually. When the night temperature is above +5 degrees, you can carefully remove the leaves from the box. And to preserve moisture in the soil, fill it with a thin layer of sawdust. We make sure that the earth does not dry out. All this time, we open the film for a short while only for watering. When the air outside stably warms up to +10 degrees, we raise the corner of the film on one side to
FOR THE NOTICE
In spring, remember that the green leaves of the rose appear earlier than the roots. If you dig such a stalk at this time, you will see, at best, the formed callus. Roses can be transplanted to a permanent place not earlier than July. By the way, half of the newly-made roses will bloom in the same year. But don't expect full flowers from them. But next year they will have a lot of strength to bloom.

NOTE: KNIFE ROSES LOVE MEAT WATER AND ONION
In summer, I water the climbing rose bushes abundantly in drought. Plants love the water in which they washed their meat. Once every 2-3 weeks I feed it with a complex fertilizer or mullein infusion (1:10).
I plant three onions near each bush to save them from aphids. If pests do appear, I dilute 1 tbsp in 1 liter of water. sunflower oil, 1 tsp. baking soda and spray the plants once a week. This, incidentally, also helps against rust and powdery mildew.
In September, I cut off old shoots, leaving them 1-1 m long, bend them to the ground (in dry weather!) And cover them with boards, slate or spruce branches.
In the spring, when the air temperature exceeds + 10 degrees, I open it and tie it to the support.

CUTTING ROSES - TIPS AND REVIEWS ABOUT METHODS
PROPAGATION BY ROSE CUTTINGS
We use this propagation method every year. It is suitable for both residents of city apartments and owners of closed terraces in houses. In the first half of November, after light frosts, we prepare cuttings about 20 cm long with 2-3 buds.
To prevent the buds from opening prematurely, we dip sections of the cuttings into melted wax and then immediately into cold water.
How do we plant rose cuttings?
At the bottom of the plastic bucket we pour expanded clay with a layer of 5-6 cm, on top - nutritious soil, for example, from a greenhouse (or ready-made soil for roses), mixed with perlite or vermiculite (3: 1). Moisten the mixture slightly.
Having dipped the lower cut of the cutting in water and then in Kornevin powder, we stick it into the “hole” prepared with a pencil. About 30 pieces will fit into a bucket with a diameter of 40-30 cm.
We wrap the container with dense cellophane or put it in a large plastic bag and tie it with twine. We fasten the top of the package with clothespins.
Then you need to wrap it all in a blanket and put it on a glassed-in balcony (“solid” terrace, veranda) - in a warm and bright place.
On a concrete floor, you need to place boards or foam plastic under the container. In case of severe night frosts, remove the cuttings indoors.
Storing cuttings in a “trap”
If we postpone work until spring, we save the cuttings. To do this, dig a hole 15 cm deep in the garden and cover its bottom with non-woven covering material (or cotton fabric). We lay out the cuttings, after removing all the leaves from them, at the same distance from each other. Cover the top with the edges of the material and sprinkle with earth. We mark the edges of the hole with pegs to make it easier to find your “treasure” in the spring. In the spring, after the snow melts, we dig up the planting material and inspect it. On cuttings that have overwintered and are preparing for rooting, callus is formed - a thick growth, from which roots then develop.
