What size is better to plant potato tubers - my advice and feedback on varieties (Kostroma region)
WHICH POTATO IS BETTER TO SIT - LARGE OR SMALL - MY EXPERIENCE
In our area, for example, the weather was exactly the same last year. All this I mean is that summer residents should be able to adapt to any weather whims and not complain about any climate change there.
After all, how then do people live and grow crops in the so-called risky farming zones? Our climate is not a gift either. For example, in April, winds quickly dry out the soil, and therefore, you need to fence the site as soon as possible in order to retain spring moisture.
And these are just flowers. For example, in the same year last year, May turned out to be drier and warmer than all summer months, when the rains were watered non-stop. And it was necessary to try so that nothing rotted in the garden. First of all, this, of course, applied to potatoes. And that's just about its cultivation, and I want to talk more substantively.
In the spring, I put the tubers in a special solution for their disinfection and replenishment. And the recipe is this: in 10 liters of water I dilute 40 g of urea, 5 g of copper sulfate, 10 g of boric acid, 1 g of potassium permanganate and a glass of ash (I dissolve everything except potassium permanganate in hot water!). I bathe potatoes in this solution for half an hour. Then I take it out, put it in the sink to glass the liquid, and then place it for germination in wooden boxes lined with newspapers.

Note that for many years now I have been planting 400 tubers ranging in size from a walnut to a category I chicken egg.
I see no reason to use larger ones, since the number of eyes of the same variety in both cases is the same. When the sprouts of potatoes grow 3 cm long, I carry out further germination on a litter of peat, humus or sawdust.
As for planting, then, in my opinion, it is best to plant potatoes in rows 2, 5-3 cm wide and with 30-35 cm furrows between them. can lock up. And if you also bury it deeply, then rot definitely cannot be avoided.
The very same planting process begins with me ... last fall. Yes Yes! With a small sapper shovel, planted on a long stalk, I embed in the ground all the green manures previously planted on the empty beds: rye, vetch and mustard. I dig everything thoroughly so that the earthworms work more actively. Therefore, next year the soil will be loose and fertile. I will only have to walk around the whole garden with a harrow at the end of April.
I'll start with potatoes on May 10. I mark the bed with a special scribe, drawing lines through each meter. Then I loosen them with a flat cutter and make grooves, where I spread seed potatoes every 40 cm, on which, in addition to sprouts, there are also roots up to 5 cm long.I close the grooves with a mixture of onion-garlic husks, and sprinkle with ash on top and, if necessary (if the weather is dry and rain is not expected) I water. I sprinkle with a hoe or a rake.
Seedlings appear on the seventh day. If night frosts are expected, in the evening I cover the sprouts with earth, and I do this until the weather is favorable. At the end of May, I fully sprinkle the potatoes for the second time, sprinkle the rows with ash. The third time I do this on June 10. As a result, high and wide ridges are obtained (we call them boletus), where roots and stolons develop well.
During the growing season, I do not feed or water the plantings with anything, because the moisture in such boletus ridges remains until the very harvest, even in a dry summer. Last year I tried to spray potatoes on tops Bessarab solution (mullein, milk whey plus rotten hay) is both a top dressing, and beneficial microbes, and hay bacillus, which is very effective in combating late blight.
Consumption - one glass of the mixture per bucket of water. And then I sprayed this solution with cabbage, beets, onions and even an apple tree! The result is excellent.
But I do not process planting from the Colorado potato beetle, because we simply have not had it for five years. Probably soaked ... By the way, for the treatments I bought a very good sprayer in the form of an ordinary pump at the market; It draws in the solution well and, when pressing the piston, throws out a jet of the desired consistency for 5-7 m! This is my agricultural technique: simple but effective. For example, in 2017, I collected 40 from two planted buckets. In 2018 - 50 buckets, and in the past - already 58.
Some summer residents, when planting small tubers (weighing 10-20 g), recommend throwing them into holes in three to four pieces. I do not advise: there will be a lot of potatoes, but small ones.
And finally - a recipe for baked potatoes. We take medium-sized tubers, wash with a brush, pierce with a fork, so that they do not "explode" during cooking. We put it in the oven (I have an electric stove) and bake for 30 minutes at a temperature of 180-200 °. You can eat such potatoes with sauerkraut, pickles or bacon.
Vika's daughter once bought planting material the size of a quail's egg. These were the potatoes Manifesto, Lad, Rogneda, Zhuravinka, Uladar, Fioretta and Bryansk delicacy. These varieties turned out to be fruitful and tasty.
