Compost grooves all over the site
COMPOST IN THE CANAVES ON THE SITE - ONE PLUSES
In the fall, instead of a compost heap, right on the beds 80-120 cm wide and 3-4 m long, I dig three grooves along the width of a shovel 60 cm deep, which I fill with organic matter.
At the bottom I pour broken brick (8-10 cm), on top of the same layer of wood chips.
Down for drainage I sprinkle the shell of nuts, expanded clay, chips.
Then evenly along the entire length of the groove I distribute a layer of horse manure up to 15 cm thick, then 20-25 cm of plant residues, fallen leaves, kitchen waste.
I cover everything with medium-thick cardboard and sprinkle with earth mixed in half with compost. I level the bed and cover it with a film.
In the spring, when the snow melts, I remove the shelter. And when the soil warms up, I plant seedlings of cabbage, cucumbers, pumpkins, zucchini and squash in the center of the grooves. On the sides I sow the seeds of sage, hyssop, borago, oregano, calendula, nasturtium, mint, lemon balm, basil, lofant. These plants not only decorate the garden beds, but also protect the main crops from diseases and pests.
Watering is alternated with top dressing with weak solutions of herbal mash and mullein (1:15) or an EM preparation (according to the instructions). During the season, I mulch abundantly with mowed grass (including in ordinary beds). I don't remove mulch for the winter.
In winter, I collect wood ash from the fireplace and bathhouse, onion-garlic husks, pine needles after the New Year holidays. In the spring, I embed all this in the soil along with the mulch remaining for the winter.
On fresh compost beds I grow the most nutrient-demanding crops - cabbage, cucumbers, pumpkins, squash. Onions, garlic, peppers, tomatoes - in the beds of the second year. And I sow the seeds of root crops, greens and legumes in beds that are at least two years old. After them I refill the soil with fresh organic matter.
