I planted two dogwood bushes in a sunny area 6 years ago. But they still don't bloom. I bought seedlings in the nursery. What is the cause of the possible problem?

      - In all respects (age, good lighting, two specimens for cross-pollination during flowering), your plants should already be blooming and bearing fruit. Why not, it's hard to say when you don't see them. I can only guess ...

You have purchased seedlings (plants grown from seeds). They, unlike seedlings (plants obtained during vegetative propagation - by grafting, layering, cuttings), bloom in the 5-7th year.
If the plants are in a sunny position (which is good), they may be lacking moisture, given the hot weather in recent years. Although dogwood is drought-resistant, during prolonged drought the plant slows down growth, the leaves curl up in a boat, thus reducing the evaporating surface. If it is not possible to regularly water the bushes, be sure to mulch the tree trunks with compost, chopped straw, leaves or grass cuttings. Lay the mulch at some distance from the trunk, leaving a free and well-ventilated space around it.

Cornel grows best on soil with a neutral or slightly alkaline reaction (pH - 7-8, 5). You may have acidic soil. And if you know that this is so, in early spring add lime to the trunk circle for digging (about 300-400 g per 1 sq. M).

My dogwood is already 10 years old. It blooms well, but there are very few fruits. How to increase the yield?

      - Cornel is self-fertile, that is, within the same plant, pollination between flowers does not occur. Therefore, you need to have at least two seedlings on the site. In your case, I advise you to plant several cuttings of a different variety in the crown in the spring, since the plant is already 10 years old. In the meantime, the cuttings take root, pollinate the dogwood with the pollen of another plant (transfer it to the inflorescence with a brush).

If possible, plant a 3-5 year old plant. Next year, it will bloom and provide cross-pollination. By the way, dogwood tolerates transplantation well at 4-10 years of age.
