13 time-tested rules for planting and caring for dogwood
KIZIL (PHOTO) IN OPEN GROUND - GROWING, LANDING AND CARE
My husband Vladimir and I received our plot of 5 acres in 1988. They mastered it from scratch, it took a lot of effort and labor. Now it is a blooming and fruitful garden-vegetable garden.
For 31 years now I have been working on the land on my own, although since childhood I have helped my mother in the garden.
The first plants that settled on the site were Victoria strawberries and three bushes of rooted black currant cuttings - Golubka, Leskovitsa and Belorusskaya sweet. The very first autumn I bought three dogwood seedlings with green leaves that have not yet fallen in our Belaya Tserkov park "Alexandria". I met the park's agronomist and she gave me complete information on planting and caring for plants.
Save a clod of earth during transportation... I wrapped the roots of each tree with newspapers and brought it to the dacha.
Dig shallow holes in one and a half to two bayonets of a shovel, and 10 cm wider than the root system. The roots of the dogwood are fibrous and shallow, up to 60 cm deep.
When planting in holes, you do not need to add manure, humus, or mineral fertilizers - only earth and water. Cornel roots with soil microflora form their own rhizosphere.
The root collar should be at ground level. If you deepen it, the tree will grow weakly, it will take on a depressed look... But if the trees are grafted, you need to plant them 3-4 cm above the ground - after shrinkage, the neck will be at the level of the soil.
Pour two or three buckets of water under each tree to saturate the soil well and seal any voids between the roots.
The distance between seedlings should be 4-5 m in a row... My trees were small two-year twigs, and I left 3 m each - now all the branches are intertwined, I had to cut some thickening branches into a ring.
Dogwood does not tolerate acidic soils, every autumn I add garden lime on mulch - about a glass for each square meter. m.
It is important to know that in in nature, dogwood grows under the canopy of a forest, i.e. physiologically prefers partial shade... It is advisable in the early years to plant it in partial shade under other trees (except for walnut) or shade it. At a young age, the crown of the tree is small, in the summer its superficial root system overheats in the sun, so the tree needs shading and mulching. In partial shade, he reaps the harvest even faster. Gradually, the crown grows, the dogwood shades its roots by itself, and the heat is not afraid of it - it is gaining more and more harvest every year. It happens that barrels of fruit are even baked in the sun.

Flowers dogwood is not self-lingering (sterile), for pollination and fruiting, it is necessary to plant two or three trees.
The quantity of the crop and its quality directly depend on the availability of moisture, from watering it seems to come to life. After the ovary appears, I water it abundantly with a mulch hose twice a week.
If the ovary begins to fall off, I spray the trees with boric acid solution: 2 g per 8 liter sprayer.
The dogwood has no pests, the fruits are environmentally friendly, which is very important.
Every spring mulch trees with corn stalks, taken after dismantling the insulation of roses and blackberries.
WHY PLANT CORNELS?
Our ancestors knew the answer well: dogwood is one of the most ancient fruit crops. A fast-growing, undemanding and unusually productive plant blooms in early spring, in March-April. Dogwood trees decorate the garden with golden clouds of flowers, many bees and bumblebees work tirelessly to pollinate them, and in the fall they amaze with an abundance of ruby berries.
Its fruits are extremely useful: they treat tuberculosis and liver diseases, decoction of roots - joints, bones relieve hemorrhoids.
Eating fresh fruits, jams, compotes, dogwood juices keeps the body of the elderly in good shape, slowing down the aging process.
The culture is quite durable: trees can grow for 200 years or more, a dogwood garden is a garden for centuries. Our first three trees are already thirty-year-old trees with extensive crowns. Mulched annually with corn stalks and watered once or twice a week, they yield up to 12 buckets of juicy and tasty fruits each.
And in 2012, two more trees of high-quality large-fruited dogwood appeared - Semyon and Starokievsky. They fruited already in the second year - the fruits are large, hang on the branches until the very frost. When fully ripe, they are incredibly tasty!
You can talk about the dogwood for a long time, but I briefly told you only what you need to know when planting and growing.
I answer the comment:
Yulia Antonovna, you have planted the dogwood tree correctly in partial shade, you do not need to replant it. Apparently, you got a seedling: the grafted begin to bear fruit from the second year, bear with it for another year or two, it will definitely bloom. You just need to plant one or two more trees for pollination.
I was not going to write, but I read about the request in the comments and could not remain silent. I have been growing dogwood for three decades and I know a lot about it. I distribute the seedlings to relatives, friends and relatives, and I also distribute the fruits to those who do not have them in the country. We do not carry anything to the market, although in difficult years the dogwood helped us out.

I planted two dogwood bushes in a sunny area 6 years ago. But they still don't bloom. I bought seedlings in the nursery. What is the cause of the possible problem?
#
- In all respects (age, good lighting, two specimens for cross-pollination during flowering), your plants should already be blooming and bearing fruit. Why not, it's hard to say when you don't see them. I can only guess ...
You have purchased seedlings (plants grown from seeds). They, unlike seedlings (plants obtained during vegetative propagation - by grafting, layering, cuttings), bloom in the 5-7th year.
If the plants are in a sunny position (which is good), they may be lacking moisture, given the hot weather in recent years. Although dogwood is drought-resistant, during prolonged drought the plant slows down growth, the leaves curl up in a boat, thus reducing the evaporating surface. If it is not possible to regularly water the bushes, be sure to mulch the tree trunks with compost, chopped straw, leaves or grass cuttings. Lay the mulch at some distance from the trunk, leaving a free and well-ventilated space around it.
Cornel grows best on soil with a neutral or slightly alkaline reaction (pH - 7-8, 5). You may have acidic soil. And if you know that this is so, in early spring add lime to the trunk circle for digging (about 300-400 g per 1 sq. M).

My dogwood is already 10 years old. It blooms well, but there are very few fruits. How to increase the yield?
#
- Cornel is self-fertile, that is, within the same plant, pollination between flowers does not occur. Therefore, you need to have at least two seedlings on the site. In your case, I advise you to plant several cuttings of a different variety in the crown in the spring, since the plant is already 10 years old. In the meantime, the cuttings take root, pollinate the dogwood with the pollen of another plant (transfer it to the inflorescence with a brush).
If possible, plant a 3-5 year old plant. Next year, it will bloom and provide cross-pollination. By the way, dogwood tolerates transplantation well at 4-10 years of age.
