How to store vegetables right in the garden, in the ground
WINTERING ON THE BED: VEGETABLES WILL BE IN ORDER!
You can save root vegetables in winter not only in the cellar, but also in the garden, while the vegetables stay strong, fresh longer and do not absorb foreign odors from the storage. How to do it? We tell ...
Mangold tolerates wintering wellif you cover it with a layer of sawdust or peat (3-5 cm). You can also use leaf litter, but you will need to put tree branches on top so that the leaves do not scatter around the garden.
Root parsley hibernates without additional cover, it is only necessary to spud it with earth to a height of 5-8 cm.
Carrots without additional shelter feels great in the soil until early November. Then cut off the tops, lay out the poisoned mouse baits, cover the garden with spruce or pine branches. Lay a layer of foliage or straw 10-15 cm thick on top, cover with foil. If the winter is cold, throw in more snow on top.
Parsnips winters in earthen mounds, like parsley, but in late October and early November, you must definitely cut the tops.
Jerusalem artichoke is poorly stored at home and in the cellar. Therefore, it is best to leave it in the garden. In late autumn, cut off the dried stems. Cover the bed with a thick layer of straw, and spread tree branches on top.
Daikon and turnips also enjoy wintering in the garden... Make bumpers for the beds with them. Deepen them by 12-15 cm, cut the tops, being careful not to damage the head of the root crop, and then pour over a layer of river sand 5-10 cm thick. Then wait a little until the onset of stable cold and cover with spruce legs.
Perennial onions (batun, schnitt, slime), sorrel, horseradish, rhubarb tolerate cold well and do not need additional shelter. But if you still decide to mulch them for the winter, remove the shelter at the very beginning of spring, as soon as the snow begins to melt. Otherwise, the earth will warm up for a long time, and greens will appear later than usual. Cut oregano, mint, lemon balm and other herbs, then cover with spunbond. Remove shelters in early spring and mulch the plants with cut grass or straw.
