Vineyard work in November + cover of grapes with soil: simple and reliable
GRAPE CARE CALENDAR - NOVEMBER.
In November, when the daytime temperature drops to +5 degrees, and below, it is time to cover the grapes.
After pruning the grape bush (late October - early November) and the completion of leaf fall, treat the plants with a solution of ferrous sulfate (300-500 g per 10 liters of water).
Lay a layer of mulch near the roots - sawdust, dry oak leaves, spruce branches, hay, corn stalks. And definitely poisoned mouse baits.
Bend the vines to the ground and cover them 15-20 cm from above with straw, which can be used as fertilizer next year. Sedge or spruce branches are suitable as a "blanket". And put spunbond (or linoleum, dornit, greenhouse film) up to protect from precipitation. The ends of such a shelter must be open. Without air ventilation, you will get a greenhouse in which the grapes will blow off.

WE HIDE A LAND OF GRAPES: SIMPLE AND RELIABLE
During his many years of practice in growing grapes, he tested various methods of shelter - with leaves, film, roofing felt, cardboard with film. The most progressive method is considered by many to be tunneling. Its essence is as follows: shoots are removed from the trellis, fastened with staples to the ground, arcs are installed above them, on which plastic wrap is pulled. He also hid his grapes in the tunnels for the winter. But I came to the conclusion that this method, in terms of labor costs and efficiency, loses to a shelter with soil. So…
With the onset of stable cold weather, I collect the vine in a bunch, bend it to the ground and press it down with a crowbar. I carry out such an operation with a vine on 3-4 m of the row length, using 3-4 scrap.
I sprinkle the vine with soil from the middle of the row-spacing - I sprinkle a hill 20-30 cm high. For plants up to 5 years old, I dig a trench along the width of the shovel bayonet. And two bayonets - for 6-year-old and older bushes.
I take out the crowbars and carry out a similar operation with the following plants. It takes an hour and a half to cover one row (16m).
The grooves formed in the aisles for the winter are filled with rotted manure (any organic matter will do). And in the spring, before opening the bushes, I loosen the soil in the grooves. Then I free the plants from the ground and tie the vines to the supports.

My "grape" secrets
I live in the north of Belarus, the weather in the region does not spoil us. Nevertheless, I have been growing grapes for 10 years. Today I have about 90 varieties on my site (Dubovsky pink, Taldun, Sharada UА, Catalonia, Princess Augusta, Attica, Alvika, Krasa beams). During this time, he developed a personal cultivation practice. I also have my own secrets, which I share.
Many problems are caused by fungal diseases of mildew and oidium to grapes, especially in the rainy season. To solve them, I built L-shaped sheds, which, if necessary, I turn into booth-type greenhouses or wagon greenhouses. But this is quite capricious grape varieties. Many plants grow and bear fruit well in the open air.
I spoil the entire vineyard once a week from the end of spring with foliar dressing (I spray it). I use the complex mineral fertilizer Kristalon of three colors: green - in May-June, yellow - at the end of June and July, brown - in August-September. Thanks to such a balanced diet, the grapes receive a powerful immune defense against all diseases. I don't use fungicides.
For the winter, I begin to cover the plants, when the frost lasts for 1-2 days at - 5 degrees. Under the bushes I put logs on the ground, on them - vines, which I cover with straw with a layer of 20-30 cm. I put old carpets on top. And so that all this "sandwich" does not get wet from precipitation, I cover it with a film.
In April I remove the shelter to the straw. And after the threat of return frosts has disappeared (after about May 15), I also harvest straw.
