Dwarf dwarf tomatoes in the greenhouse - growing, planting and care
HOW TO GROW Dwarf tomatoes in a greenhouse + REVIEW AND REVIEWS ABOUT VARIETIES
“Oh, the kingdom is not enough - there is nowhere to roam,” I said, planting seedlings of tomatoes and peppers in their permanent places. Yes, almost 700 bushes with handles alone are not difficult - it's impossible.
But "accidents are not accidental, and the impossible is possible."
There was a time when I thought that a tomato should be tall or medium-sized, until I accidentally saw the mention of dwarf series tomatoes ("gnome"). "Well, is it a tomato?" - I thought. But I decided to try it. Since I am the happy owner of two greenhouses 3 × 4 m and 3 × 6 m, you cannot fit so many bushes in greenhouses, whatever one may say. Therefore, most of the tomatoes are in the open field, like all peppers, by the way.
Having raised gnomes, I just fell in love with dwarf tomato varieties! This is a salvation for thirsty tomato plants without greenhouses. Dwarf tomato varieties that are sufficiently resistant to cold and disease will always delight you with their harvest.
Many plant them in containers, buckets or bags on the balcony, in different places on their site. And I have three huge beds; put a small support in the middle of the garden and tied them to it so that the fruits would not stain their sides with earth.
And it's easy to protect tomatoes from unexpected cold or dew: just put the arc on the garden bed with the gnomes and cover it with spunbond. But indeterminate varieties cannot be covered especially in the open field - the wind will blow and rip off, the covering material for 1, 5-meter bushes blows like a sail. You need either a greenhouse, or patience and a desire to deal with weather troubles.
Gnomes are different! They can even be planted with two roots in one hole. Breeders from different continents are attracted to dwarf tomatoes for their ability to grow in containers. They need little space - and we get new interesting and tasty varieties. And they are different - for every taste, color and weight! For example, let's take the gnome Desperato. No wonder the breeder Blane Horton gave such a name to his variety: it desperately knits heart-shaped-elongated fruits even in unfavorable weather. And the bush is only 50-60 cm high! Two more wonderful gnomes from Blane Horton - Pit Viper (Pit viper) and Red Viper (Red viper), are presented every year with fruits weighing 80-120 g. And if the Red Viper, as we see by its name, has red fruits, then in Pit Viper they variegated, brown-green in color with bright red stripes, and the flesh on the cut is green with a red spot.
Another interesting development of this breeder is the gnome Babylons Glow (Shining of Babylon). The unusual color of the heart-shaped fruit attracts the eye - the ocher skin tone is generously decorated with green flashes.
Growing gnomes of different varieties and colors, we can get not only taste, but also aesthetic pleasure, diluting the classic tomato red color with different color shades and paints.
Stunning beauty gnomes Confetti, Beauty King, DSA, Firebird Sweet, The Thong give colorful tasty two-color fruits weighing 100 g and more. Very good for these kids!
I especially remember the early and early dwarfs Arctic Rose (Arctic rose), Nikitichna in the wheel and Mongolian
dwarf. They have withstood lower temperatures and may be able to produce crops in harsher climates than ours. Their fruits are classic tomato flavor and color, weighing 100 g and above.
Dwarf Craiova (Craiova) Polish selection and Steamy (Steamy) from the USA showed excellent yields. Their fruits are red, weighing 50-80 g. Excellent size for whole-fruit canning!

Many are afraid to plant tomatoes in open ground. This is understandable - unstable summer weather is not uncommon in many regions. And I want to try a lot! It is possible to plant low tomatoes in greenhouses in the foreground, and tall ones in the second. But I don't put gnomes in greenhouses. Why take up space? As a result, the plants do not shade each other. So dwarfs and determinant varieties are suitable not only for open ground, but also for layering tomatoes in a greenhouse.
For a small tomato "kingdom", some tomato lovers use the technology to reduce the cultivated area and increase the yield, planting two bushes in one hole or growing tomatoes in several trunks.
I have used this technology on the Banded Amazon undersized determinant tomato and many other children. I can, however, plant two Indets in one hole, but they need careful formation, and most importantly, varieties with a potato leaf cannot be planted like that. He showed excellent productivity in the open field, including with the "two roots per hole" technology. A very effective variety, especially during the fruiting period: brick-red fruits with green stripes are very elegant. Two shrubs of the Bowen Buckeye variety did not interfere with each other: it is simply hung with fruits, but needs good support and a garter.
And now I'll tell you about the favorite varieties. The most delicious, in my opinion, determinant cherry tomato Candy Sweet Icicle (Sweet icicles). I always plant it in open ground, and every year it pleases with abundant fruiting. Tom-tiki are sweet and tasty, you mime about going - you will definitely pinch it off! Another novelty similar to it, Maglia Rosa, appeared in my collection - a fruitful baby with oval cherry fruits.
An excellent harvest is given by Roi Humbert (King Humbert), Shadow Boxing (Fight with a shadow), Anna German, Tarasenko-2 Hybrid, Jubilee Tarasenko, Wonder of the World, Hundreds And Thousands (Hundreds and Thousands). I will dwell on the latter in more detail. I learned about him from a wonderful girl from
Norway. She mentioned this variety, specifying that Europeans love to plant it as an ampelous plant. In hanging pots, the tomato looks unusually beautiful! The branches hang down, and the tomato produces many small (large currant-sized) red "berries" -fruits. Children especially love to pinch him. Convenient variety: if it gets cold outside, the pots can be outweighed to warm, and the tomato will continue to bear fruit. And he does it truly non-stop! I just collected the basket, after a few days you can go again, and you will fill the basket again.
There are tomatoes for every taste: dwarfs, children, indetes ... And if you wish, they can be placed so that they all feel comfortable, and you enjoy contemplating the riot of fruit colors, feeling the nuances of their taste. The main thing is not to stop at what has been achieved, to try new things and gain experience, because “... all our knowledge begins with experience ...” (I. Kant).
