CULTIVATION OF MANCHZHUR NUTS IN THE MOSCOW REGION
Summer residents, choosing what kind of crop to plant, first of all put its usefulness at the forefront. Just what should be understood by this term?
Walking through the garden partnerships, I see the majestic Manchu nuts growing in some areas, similar to palm trees and I am glad about it: there are still people who can fully appreciate this culture! I personally fell in love with her almost at first sight and decided to plant on my site.
Someone invisible quickly reacted to my desire: a few days later I found in the forest, on a spontaneous heap of all organic matter and debris, about a dozen young nut seedlings! Some of them were still small, only 50-70 cm in height, others had already grown up to one and a half meters. I chose the tallest and strongest ones, marked them, went home for a shovel, returned and began to dig.
During this work, I immediately noticed that the root system of the seedlings is superficial, which means that after transplanting to the site, it will be necessary to dig deeper the pegs near each tree so that the wind does not knock them down.
And I also noticed that the healthiest-looking seedlings grew for some reason where there was most of all some kind of household waste: small boards, crumpled plastic cups, half-rotted slippers ... After thinking, I came to the conclusion that such garbage protected the upper layers organics from drying and pressing (i.e. served as a kind of mulch) and thereby provided the root systems of the seedlings with oxygen.
I took all this into account and tried to create a similar habitat for my new pets. True, in the forest they grew in partial shade, but I found themselves in the sun, but they still took root well. I think that the fact that I diligently mulched the ground around them not only with mown grass, but also with chopped branches left after spring pruning played an important role in this.
In general, the Manchu nut takes root quite easily. And a little later I realized that he also does not require special care: I very rarely water these trees and add mulch.
But at the beginning of this whole epic, I had a conversation with one of the old-timers of our SNT, who has had a Manchurian nut growing in his garden for a long time. And this conversation, I must admit, upset me. And the fact is that my interlocutor began ... to dissuade me from growing the culture I liked! According to him, there is no benefit from it. For example, although the nucleoli in fruits are edible, it is difficult to get them, since the shell is very tough. And they themselves are too modest in size for all this fuss with them to be justified. Therefore, the best thing to do with ripe nuts is to wait for them to fall to the ground, scoop them up and send them to compost. At least, according to my new acquaintance, he does just that.
In the evening, scrolling through the conversation in my thoughts, I suddenly remembered that in my youth I was presented with a set of bracelets and earrings made of Manchu nut shells, sawn across, polished and varnished. Indeed, there were few gaps for the nucleoli. But still, something prevented me from fully believing everything that was said. Do people in different magazines and on the Internet cheat by admiring the Manchu nut? And my recent interlocutor himself did not explain why he hadn’t cut down this “unnecessary” tree so far.
And then I remembered this. In a book on gardening I once read that the size of apples is not the main indicator of the quality of a variety. There are apple trees, "semi-crops", which are distinguished by winter hardiness, drought resistance, unpretentiousness and disease resistance. Their fruits, although small, contain much more biologically active and healthy substances than other giant apples from the advertised varieties. And we are all trying to grow larger fruits, while losing their nutritional value. Consequently, fussing with Manchu nuts may still not be in vain? I began to study special literature and found out that this is really so.
Nuts have a high energy value and contain all the nutrients and vitamins necessary for a person, which are also easily digestible.
Together with sprouted cereals, fresh vegetables and fruits, nuts make up a balanced diet, in which the body does not accumulate toxins and which completely provides it with material for the production of healthy cells. In general, nuts can be considered a highly concentrated type of food, so eating a few of them a day is sufficient. They stimulate and strengthen brain cells, restore nervous and physical energy, relieve nervousness and fatigue, have a beneficial effect on the functioning of the liver, kidneys, spleen, stomach and increase hormonal activity.
At the same time, not only nut kernels have healing properties. From the leaves and partitions of the shell, you can also prepare useful drugs that help with diseases of the thyroid gland and heart, as well as with hypertension, mastopathy, atherosclerosis and myoma. The same leaves can be added to herbal teas (but not more than one thing a day), and a decoction of them is very good as a rinse for stomatitis or for a special mask that helps to improve hair growth. I also learned that even the green fruits of the Manchurian nut can be beneficial: they make a healing tincture of them to strengthen the immune system.
And such a gift from God is offered to me to be considered useless ?!

JAM FROM MANCHURIAN NUTS - FINGER FINGERS!
However, I will also touch on the topic of pleasure. I really love green walnut jam. I would like to cook it myself, but where can I get unripe fruits? So I had to buy ready-made, but rarely: the price is exorbitant, and the jars are small. First of all, the children and I fished out of them, of course, the nuts themselves, and only after they were completely destroyed did the turn come to syrup.
But then my Manchu nuts began to bear fruit, and I decided to try to make jam from them. And it turned out just as well. What is there! I will cast aside false modesty and say - better than the one I bought! I feel sorry for the little man who throws them into the compost. Well, okay, his business.
Back to the jam.
Yes, it is not easy to prepare it, but the result is worth it. I empirically worked out the following recipe. I pick the fruits in June, when they can be easily cut with a knife, and soak them in a basin for 12 days, changing the water twice a day. But! Before "bathing" I cut off the ends, pierce the nuts with a sharp wooden stick in several places and insert cloves spices into the holes on the bud. After soaking, I wash the nuts, pour boiling water and cook over low heat for 15 minutes.
I drain the broth and repeat the procedure. Then I pour the fruits with clean water and leave them alone for two hours, and at this time I prepare the syrup. For 1 kg of nuts I take 1 kg of sugar, 350 ml of water, 1 lemon (or rather, its juice), 10 g of cinnamon and 3 black peppercorns. I add sugar to boiling water, cook until dissolved over low heat, stirring constantly and skimming off the foam. After two hours, I drain the water from the nuts, dry the fruits and put them in sweet water. There, in a bag of gauze, I add spices, and then lemon juice. I cook the jam over low heat for about 10 minutes. Then I turn off the fire and leave the jam until morning. The next day I do the same as the previous one, and on the third day I cook on low heat for only 5 minutes, after which I put it in the jars, after having fished out a bag of spices.
This jam should be kept in a cool dark place, so I put it in the refrigerator. This, however, can be fraught with surprises. Once, just a week and a half after making a treat, I decided to audit the refrigerator and found only the remains of syrup in jars of jam. Well? It was not necessary to search for suspects for a long time, although during the investigation the children were confused in their testimonies, which boiled down to the fact that none of them knew what had happened either by sleep or by spirit ...
Yes, by the way, I do not advise you to reduce the technology for preparing a delicacy - otherwise the jam may taste bitter, because it is rich in iodine, which, by the way, is usually not enough in the body. I try to limit my sugar intake, so sometimes I make jam based on a ratio of 700 g of sand and 750 ml of water per 1,4 kg of nuts.

WALNUT BREEDING
Among other things, the Manchu walnut is also very decorative. Once admiring the spreading crowns of trees, I suddenly thought that it would be nice to try to make a hedge out of them. And, looking ahead, I will say that my assumptions were fully justified.
How did I propagate this culture?
It turned out that the easiest way to do this is with the help of "extra" fruits. I collect them from the ground in the fall, cleanse them of pericarp, dry them and plant them before winter. And I close it up to a depth of about 4 cm with "seams" down, cover it with earth and mulch with fallen leaves and cut grass. Almost all fruits germinate, because the germination of the nut is good, and the seedlings that appear quickly grow. Care for them is small: watering in hot weather, adding mulch two or three times during the summer and feeding with green fertilizer with the addition of a solution of a microbiological preparation. That's all the trouble. But what handsome men grow up!
By the way, the removed pericarp can also be used for medicinal purposes. I pass them through a meat grinder, mix with honey and put them in jars, which I keep in the refrigerator. And in winter I add 1/2 tsp. of this drug in tea or other drink. However, in everything you need to know when to stop: no more than 1 tsp should be used per day. such a sweet medicine.
I also like to take a bath with infusion from the same pericarp. To do this, I pour boiling water over them (at the rate of 3 liters per liter can of raw materials) and leave for one hour. Then I pour the infusion into the bath, add 500 g of sea salt and bathe for 15-20 minutes. This procedure has a firming effect on the body, perfectly relieving fatigue.
Now I plant the fruits of this wonderful de
roar, distribute to friends and send to other people who want to grow Manchu walnut. Let our land become a wonderful garden with beautiful and healing trees! In general, I do not have a soul in my green pets. I admire them, I say kind words to them, and they cordially wave at me their huge "palm" leaves, like wings, as if they are preparing to take off, and call me with them ...
Wait, dear ones, I will fly, but while I have unfinished business here on earth.
Manchurian nut decoction for the treatment of skin irritations.
Chop 2-3 dry leaves of walnut and wormwood, mix. Pour boiling water over, cover and leave for 3 hours, drain. To cure acne and pimples, you need to wipe your face 2 times a day with a decoction. With subcutaneous acne and boils, a cotton pad is moistened in the infusion, then a drop of tea tree oil is added to it, after which the disc is applied to the skin for 30 minutes.
