GOING TO SPRING PLANT A GOBEBERRY? HURRY UP!
The plant starts growing early. Saplings with blossoming buds take root worse, grow more slowly and later begin to bear fruit. Plant the gooseberries before they start growing.
Consider 3 important points.
CHOOSE A PLACE
A young gooseberry cannot be immediately planted in the place of the old one (it can only be returned to its original site after 3 years). Areas after stubbing black and red currants are also undesirable, since these crops have common diseases and pests. The best predecessors are potatoes and other vegetables.
1. PREPARATION OF THE AREA FOR LANDING A GOALBERRY
Set aside a well-ventilated and well-lit place for gooseberries: thickened plantings will provide favorable conditions for fungal diseases, especially American powdery mildew.
It is undesirable to plant gooseberries in higher elevations, where it suffers from cold winds in winter and from lack of moisture in summer. Lowlands, where cold air accumulates, are not suitable for him (in spring, flowers and ovaries are more often damaged by frost). The groundwater level should not be closer to the soil surface than 1 m. Before spring planting, in advance, add rotted manure (compost) for digging - 6-10 kg per 1 sq. M.
2. SELECTION OF GOSEBERRY SEEDLINGS FOR PLANTING
On seedlings with an open root system (ACS), there should be no visible signs of disease and damage to shoots and roots, they should be completely lignified. And no leaves! Take 1-2-year-old seedlings with roots at least 25 cm long and an aerial part of two to four strong shoots at least 25 cm long - they take root better.
For seedlings with a closed root system (in containers), choose firm, well leafy, intensely colored leaves and free from signs of disease. The roots should be light, completely encircling an earthen ball, with numerous white roots.
3. LANDING A GOSEBERRY
Prepare planting holes in advance with a width of 30-40 cm and a depth of 40-50 cm.The distance between plants is at least 1 m.
If, after long-term transportation, the roots of seedlings with ACS turned out to be dried, first immerse them in water for 1-2 hours. Then place it in the planting hole vertically or at an angle of 45 degrees, straightening the roots (cut the long ones to 20 cm before planting). Cover with fertile soil, deepening the lower part of the shoots by about 5-7 cm. Water well (5 liters per plant) and mulch the soil around the bush with straw, sawdust, and wood chips in a layer of 10-15 cm.
TIP: After planting, cut the aboveground part of the gooseberry, leaving 3-5 buds on each shoot from the soil surface. This technique contributes to better plant survival and will allow to form a bush with 6-10 annual shoots during the season, which will give the first harvest in the 2-3rd year after planting.
