Dwarf apple - pros and cons
More and more gardeners are abandoning vigorous apple trees with a height of 4-6 m in favor of dwarf ones.
They are usually grown by grafting apple cuttings of common varieties onto dwarf rootstocks (paradiscs). The height of such plants does not exceed 2 m.
In my garden, a dwarf apple tree of the Moscow Pear variety has been growing and bearing fruit annually for many years. And it must be admitted that such plants, in addition to their compactness, have other undoubted advantages over vigorous ones.
KARLIKOVA APPLE: CONTINUOUS PLUSES
Dwarfs are fast-growing, which means that they enter fruiting earlier (in the 3rd year). And they are incredibly productive.
Such apple trees are indispensable in gardens with a high level of groundwater occurrence, because their root system reaches a depth of no more than 1 m.
Low-growing trees do not shade with their crown the rest of the plants in the garden (unlike tall ones).
On dwarf apple trees, it is easy to carry out pruning, protective treatments against diseases and pests. Not only the elderly, but also children will be able to harvest without a stepladder.
BUT THERE IS A MINUS
Due to the fact that the root system of dwarf apple trees is located in the upper layers of the soil, under the influence of the wind, trees can bend dangerously, even fall.
Therefore, it is advisable to plant such apple trees in places protected from strong winds. And be sure to tie it to the landing stake.
FACT: THE FORMATION OF THE CROWN OF THE Dwarf APPLE DOESN'T DIFFER FROM THIS PROCEDURE IN TALL APPLES. THE STAMP OF THE Dwarf APPLE WILL HAVE TO BE FORMED AT A HEIGHT NOT MORE THAN 60 CM FROM THE GROUND.

How to distinguish a dwarf apple seedling from an ordinary one when buying
The differences between tall and dwarf trees become noticeable even at the stage of selecting seedlings.
When buying, dwarf seedlings can be distinguished, for example, by large buds at the ends of branches or a fibrous root system with small roots.
Tall apple trees, by comparison, have a taproot system.
Although a lot, of course, depends on the variety, the growing zone (for example, in the south, one-year-old seedlings sometimes look like three-year-olds from the middle lane).
