CUCUMBERS IN A GREENHOUSE WITHOUT CHEMISTRY - GROWING AND FIGHTING PESTS
Problems with cucumbers can lead to the fact that even a staunch supporter of organic farming will be drawn to chemistry. But this is a road to nowhere: it is much more useful to revise your usual agricultural techniques and try to change it. The author did it.
There were so many articles about them ... But still, not everyone manages to make friends with cucumbers the first time. As a child, when my mother was in charge of all the affairs, it seemed to me that everything grows by itself, including cucumbers. And when I got my own garden, it turned out that this is not at all the case! And I have been trying to tame such a seemingly simple culture for several years now.
For me, the whole difficulty in growing greens is that very quickly they start to get sick. Whatever misfortunes fall on the cucumber plantings, I don't even want to list, but as a result - yellowing and drying of the leaves, and then the whole lashes. What a harvest here! So, reading about someone's generous harvests, and even until late autumn, I, frankly, envy white envy! And the problem is aggravated by the fact that you want to get cucumbers as early as possible.
I also remember from my mother's experience that she always planted cucumbers in a warm garden bed, so I do this, only I do it in a greenhouse. I tie the cucumber lashes to the trellises. Sometimes (about once every two weeks) I feed with green EM infusion and spray with EM preparations. I try not to use chemistry, but when aphids or a spider mite attack en masse, there is simply no strength to look at it, and involuntarily you start looking for something more striking ...
Someone in the magazine advised to plant geraniums in the greenhouse from the spider mite and maintain high air humidity, since this parasite prefers dry hot air.
I tried it: all summer there were buckets of water in the greenhouse, and the geranium grew beautifully. Yes, it helped a little, but still the harvest could have been better ... And last season, after transplanting cucumber seedlings into a greenhouse, someone nibbled it right at ground level, and the cucumbers had to be sown. I think the crickets did their best.
CULTIVATION OF CUCUMBERS - IT'S TIME TO GET RID OF OLD HABITS!
And all the same, I decided that there was no time for despondency - we had to act! I urgently planted the seeds directly in the greenhouse soil. Oddly enough, no one touched the cucumber sprouts anymore. Again, on the advice from our magazine, I decided to feed and spray my green pets more often - weekly. And for the first time she changed agricultural technology in terms of plant formation. After all, it is not for nothing that recommendations for the rationing of cucumber lashes are so common, especially if they are hybrids.
This is earlier, when everyone planted varietal cucumbers from their own seeds, the first rule (except for a warm bed) was to pinch the plants after the fourth or fifth leaf on the side strings, more female flowers, respectively, this measure increased the yield.
But today this rule does not work, because now almost everyone grows parthenocarpic self-pollinating hybrids!
And yet how difficult it is to give up the usual actions! However, this time I promised myself that I would certainly try a new method for me, and strictly monitored the cucumber growth:
- tore off all the ovaries up to the fifth leaf;
- when the plants grew even higher, gradually cut off four leaves below;
- after the fifth leaf, she began to leave ovaries and lateral shoots, but cut off the first four lateral shoots after the first lateral leaf;
- the next four lateral shoots have already left three leaves.
Subsequent lateral shoots were no longer formed. Such cultivation techniques may seem troublesome out of habit, but it's worth it. The greenhouse is spacious, there is no thickening, because between the plants of 60-80 cm, everything is visible, ventilated, respectively, it is very convenient to care for and harvest. Moreover, for the first time I arranged the honeycomb trellis in a new way: not along the garden bed, but across, i.e. each cucumber plant had its own mesh. These fittings have served me for more than one year. Their width is only 50 cm, and their length is just the height of the greenhouse. In the spring, as soon as the seedlings take root, the lower ends of the nets are stuck into the ground (photo 1), and I tie the upper ends to the greenhouse crossbar. I clean it in the fall.
In general, for a small family, it is enough to plant 10 cucumber plants, two of which are long, Chinese: enough for food, and for salting. We even distributed fresh cucumbers and pickles to children (photo 2). And how the soul rejoices when you look not at the scum, but at the healthy, fruitful bushes (photo 3)!
Yet cucumber hybrids don't live from April to October. Or I'm wrong?
By the way
Cucumber grass (borago) blooms beautifully and smells like cucumbers. Its leaves, which taste like cucumbers and onions, are used in salads, first courses and sauces. Sauteed and fried shoots make an excellent side dish. But the most interesting of all is the elegant blue borago flowers. They can be eaten fresh (in salads), dried or candied. In the latter case, they become an original edible decoration of desserts.
No matter how hard I tried, by July the plants still began to age and underwent an invasion of spider mites. At the end of July, I already pulled the cucumber lashes out of the greenhouse, leaving only the Emerald Stream F1. This hybrid from the category of Chinese turned out to be the most tenacious and prolific (photo 4). And although there were only three plants of this variety, we had enough wonderful salad cucumbers until the fall.
In addition to Chinese, I tried to grow other varieties, of the bunch parthenocarpics, the Taste of Childhood variety turned out to be the most tenacious for us (photo 5).
Maybe the seeds were just good or my conditions suited them ... And there were only five bushes of them, and I salted the first jar in mid-June. In general, for the first time I saw how cucumbers grow in bunches, before they often dried out in the bud. So the experiment, one might say, was a success.
After the first cucumbers, I tried to plant a second batch in a greenhouse at the end of July, but nothing good came of this experiment. No, they, of course, grew, but they did not have time to give the harvest. As a result, I concluded: if you plant the second series, then not with seeds, but with seedlings (photo 6), in order to transplant it into a greenhouse in July. Although without the second series, we finally ate cucumbers to the core!
Use small, strong cucumbers with firm flesh. Add oak and cherry leaves to enhance the flavor. To speed up the process, dip the cucumbers in boiling water for 2-3 seconds before placing them in a barrel and immediately cool them in cold water. There is also a more "tasty" way to speed up the salting: shift the cucumbers with cabbage leaves and place a piece of black bread in the barrel.
To make the cucumbers tastier and better preserved, add 10 liter of vinegar (1%) and 9 ml of vodka for every 150 liters of water.
SNACK WITH SURPRISE
0,5 kg of pickles, 2 eggs, 100 g of ham, 100 g of sausage, 250 g of carrots, 100 g of butter, pepper, salt.
Boil carrots cut into strips in salted water, put in a colander and lightly simmer in butter. Then put in a thin layer on a dish.
Minced meat: finely chop boiled eggs and ham and mix with butter, warmed to softness. Spice up.
Cut medium-sized pickles in half lengthwise, remove the pulp and fill the halves with minced meat. Put on carrots and place sausage slices fried in oil between the cucumber halves.
Decorate the dish with red pepper pods, green onions, egg slices, herbs.
