HOW TO GROW CABBAGE IN CHEESE, PEAT PLOT

I want to share experience in growing white cabbage in a peat area with a high groundwater level... Previously, this culture was not given to me, but thanks to a whole set of advice, I began to get a stable harvest.

In the fall, we are preparing a bulk bed. It must be above ground level so that the cabbage roots are not in the acidic peat soil, otherwise keela will form. This is a dangerous fungal disease that can completely ruin the crop.

It is best to grow cabbage seedlings in a greenhouse or special greenhouses, in which case it will flow strong and healthy. I plant the seeds at the end of April. The varieties Megaton and Belorusskaya 455 have shown themselves well. Adapt the sowing date to your region. I plant seedlings in open ground at the end of May in cloudy weather.

Before planting in the ground, I make holes about 30 cm deep. I add a little humus to each, a handful of ash, mix well and water. Until the water is completely absorbed, I immerse the roots of the seedling in this chatterbox, sprinkle it with earth and lightly tamp it. As a result, the cabbage seedling should be at the bottom of the hole so that its edges are higher than the seedling planting site. On top I put a transparent plastic bottle without a bottom - it will save cabbage from frost, which in our region can last until mid-June. In addition, this technique creates a comfortable microclimate, allowing the plant to take root well.

When the threat of return frosts has passed, I remove the shelter, water and lightly sprinkle the legs of young cabbage with earth from the edges of the hole.

I cut out rings from five-liter bottles, cut off the bottom and top of each. The resulting cylinder is cut in half lengthwise, the height of each ring is about 11-12 cm. I put on such a ring over the seedling and lightly press it into the ground. What does it give us? Firstly, watering cabbage in this bowl becomes more efficient: water flows directly to the cabbage roots, and does not spill over the entire surface of the garden, the same is with feeding. Secondly, in the process of growth, the hilling of the cabbage leg is also carried out in this bowl, which prevents the cabbage from falling on its side.

The most important secret of growing cabbage is to water it at the root with the so-called milk of lime.

In a bucket of water, stir about a glass of fluff (slaked lime), outwardly this solution really resembles milk. They need to water the cabbage every two to three weeks. Such top dressing deacidifies the soil well, it contains a large amount of calcium, magnesium and potassium. The leaves after it become dense, and the legs are strong. By the end of July, the heads of cabbage begin to twist, and by the time of harvest, their weight reaches 4-5 kg.

Also, I cannot fail to mention another top dressing that cabbage really likes - this is chicken droppings.

I buy it in granules, I dilute it according to the instructions. I feed it twice a season during the formation of heads of cabbage.

For some, growing cabbage is not difficult, but for gardeners who have plots in swamps, my experience will help to get a good harvest of this crop. Agricultural technology in such areas is quite specific, I have had many failures, but over time, experience came thanks to the advice of our respected authors. There is an opinion that it is better to sow peppers with seeds immediately in individual containers, since they do not tolerate picking well. This is not surprising. At a young plant, a rather long taproot is formed at first, which breaks easily when trying to get it out of the ground during transplantation. Such a plant takes root for a long time and begins to lag behind in development. In this regard, I want to talk about my experience in picking plants with a long root.

I sow the seeds in a common plastic container with high walls. I start picking as early as possible, in the phase of the first two cotyledonous leaves. Already at this age, in peppers, the root length can reach 10 cm or more.

I pour warm water into a container with young seedlings, and so much so that the earth is saturated through and through and gets a mushy state. Then I pick up an artistic spatula - a palette knife - and lower it into the wet earth along the dived pepper to the very bottom of the container. Then I begin to carefully lift the earth from the bottom with a spatula, while holding the plant with my left hand.

If the soil is sufficiently saturated with water, it will be easy to remove the root completely. I put the plant in separate cups or in one-liter milk cartons, after making the recesses with the same spatula, into which I carefully place the root, and pour it with warm water. You can replace the palette knife with another tool, the main thing is that the blade is thin and long. The survival rate with this method of transplantation is one hundred percent.
