RUST MITE - HOW TO FIGHT?
I have never seen this before: the leaves of tomatoes turn brown and sag, as if someone had burned them. What is this attack?
Maria Fedorovna LIS
The well-known spider mite, a great lover of cucumber plants, recently had a brother whose "surname" is rusty.
This lover of a warm climate, following the advance of the global warming front to the north and east, began to conquer new territories, and this is our land. His favorite food is tomatoes and other nightshade crops. So, give him free rein, he, together with his spider web brother, may well devastate most of the garden.
RUST MITE - KNOW THE ENEMY IN THE "FACE"
The rust mite is a very small creature: its length does not exceed a fifth of a millimeter. And since it is impossible to see the pest with the naked eye, it is worth paying attention to the traces of his atrocities. If it sucks out the juices of the plant, being outside, on the leaves and stems, then first rounded brown spots are formed, which then acquire a rust color. At the last stage, the leaves and ovaries dry out and fall off.
Ticks often penetrate into the leaves, which quickly begin to dry out the edges, and they themselves curl around the main vein and eventually die off.
With the most severe lesions, almost all leaves dry out, and the stems become cracked and turn brown. But even in milder cases, the "machinations" of the pest can lead to the loss of a third to half of the crop. Some of the surviving fruits develop cork-like growths, which makes the tomatoes inedible.
The females of the pest overwinter in the greenery of plants of the Solanaceae family, including the common dope and the black nightshade.
Note
For 1,5 months of life, the female rust mite lays up to 50 eggs on the leaves and petioles, from which the larvae hatch. They also feed on plant juices and grow into adults in about a week.

RUST MITE PREVENTION
Since tomatoes are mainly grown in greenhouses, special attention should be paid to these indoor areas. After harvesting, it is necessary to completely remove all organic residues, thoroughly rinse and disinfect containers, tools, structural elements, wires and trellis supports.
A good disinfecting effect is given by periodical treatments of greenhouses and greenhouses free from plants with sulfur bombs. Their pest-killing smoke penetrates into the most inaccessible places for washing or spraying.
RUST MITE ON TOMATOES - HOW TO FIGHT?
If the rust mite nevertheless got to the greenhouse and began to rampage there, it is worth calling on biological, chemical and folk remedies for help.
The natural enemy of the pest is the Neoseyulus cucoumeris mite, which needs to be settled on tomato plantings. Colonies of this predator are sold in moisture-resistant bags, bottles and even buckets.
Of the chemicals in the fight against ticks, Vertimecom, Atellik, Karbofos, Kemifos, Fufanon, Fitoverm help well.
One of the most effective means is "Bertimek". They are given two sprays with a break a week. The fact is that pesticides do not act on the eggs of the pest and you need to wait until the larvae appear from them.
From folk remedies, you should use those that have proven their effectiveness in the fight against spider mites. Among them - garlic infusion, onion husks, potato tops and horseradish roots; decoctions of bitter herbs (wormwood, dandelion, celandine), tobacco leaves.
