Blackcurrant variety Lazy - my reviews
CURRANT VARIETY "TAPE" - DESCRIPTION AND FEATURES
For more than 10 years now, a bush of black currant of the Lazytay variety has been growing with me and pleases with large yields of sweet fragrant berries. Isn't it a funny name? However, I had to deal with such summer residents who, according to the experience of "communication" with this currant, believed that the Oryol breeders who bred Lazy, gave such a name to their brainchild for its poor yield and small berries.
Well what can you say? First of all, the same breeders from the Oryol region have not yet been noticed in the production of defective products. And the Lazy One also has a number of undoubted advantages. And if he did not seem to you in all its glory, then it means that you just keep it on a starvation diet or do not provide sufficient illumination.
For me personally, this is a real breadwinner variety! And in terms of yield, it is one of the best in my collection. Its berries are large, the clusters are small: it is very convenient to pick ripe fruits! But the main thing is that it got its ambiguous name precisely because the berries do not ripen at the same time, i.e. the bush is just too lazy to give out its mad harvest right away!
Another important feature: ripe fruits do not fall off for a long time (at least in my garden they hang on branches until the end of September) and do not deteriorate.
In terms of ripening, this variety belongs to the middle-late, which again can be counted among the advantages. Well, judge for yourself: isn't it joyful to literally casually pick three or four clusters of fragrant, very sweet "lazy" berries in the garden, when other varieties of black currant have long since departed? As for cold resistance, this variety tolerates frosts down to -40 ° without damage.
I take minimal care of the bush. Of course, I regularly and mercilessly cut out old - at the age of six to eight years - the branches that have drifted off (their striking distinguishing feature is the gray bark).
To scare away moth butterflies, which can easily destroy a third of the crop, I lay stepchildren of tomatoes cut by my wife around the crown during the summer, and tomato tops in the fall
(not having, of course, even a hint of the presence of phytophthora). Well, I scatter once every three to four years - over a light frost in late autumn - ash. And another bucket of compost on top.
Will you say that this should be done in the spring? You can, of course, do so. But, in my opinion, the most complete effect of such feeding will still be just in the first case, because thanks to the rains and melting snow, all the nutrients will get where they need to, which will be seen by healthy foliage and a large harvest. And besides, at the beginning of the season in the garden and other works above the roof.
For the sake of fairness, I will add that in almost the same way I take care of other varieties of black currant that grow with me.

NOTE: MY WAY OF BREEDING BLACK CURRANT
I want to share my experience of black currant breeding, especially since now is just the right time for this operation. Doubt? And in vain! After all, it will be very costly to buy seedlings on the market now - the prices of sellers by the summer are raising to the maximum. In general, it looks like this. In June, I choose the largest, healthiest and most fruitful branch on the bush, regardless of how high it is from the ground. I am building a simple table-stand next to her.
I take a cellophane bag, cut the butt off of it and pour inside a moistened nutrient mixture from fertile soil and humus.
Then I remove a circular piece of bark on the selected branch, insert
it in a bag, I tie the edges on both sides and put the bag on a table-stand so as not to break the branch.
That's it, until September I forget about all the manipulations. And by this time, quite viable roots grow on the part of the branch "packed" in a bag. Then I cut it off from the main branch, remove the bag with the mixture, and plant it in the ground. As a rule, new seedlings have no problems with survival.
