JUNE CARROT SOWING
Time flies quickly for spring worries. But what if you didn't manage to sow carrots in May?
Late-ripening carrot varieties take 120-140 days from germination to harvest. And the early ones are only 85-95 days old. Thus, even with the June sowing, it is quite possible to get a decent harvest from them. The main thing is to protect the plants from carrot flies.
O. Lapshina in the Leningrad Region has been using her grandmother's technique for many years. 10 days before sowing, she pours carrot seeds into a spacious tissue bag, distributes them evenly there and buries them in the ground, to a depth of half a shovel. The soil in this area is kept moist. (If the soil is clayey, it is worth adding sand or peat to it to make it more breathable. - Ed.)
After 10 days, the bag is dug out. Seeds swollen with moisture become large. They are poured into a saucer and powdered with starch. Watering the carrot bed well. It puts the resulting starch "granules" into grooves at a distance of 7-9 cm from one another (so as not to thin out the seedlings) and sprinkle it with loose soil. Seedlings appear on the 3-5th day. Until this time, watering the bed is not required so that a crust does not form. If the weather is very hot or windy, you can sprinkle the soil with a thin layer of hay. It will create a light shadow, and the earth will not dry out so much, and this will not hurt the carrots.
D. Pestova from Ufa also shared her experience of late sowing of carrots. She is a supporter of organic farming and sows green manure beds from early spring. It so happened that by June it was not possible to sow carrots yet. Then she did this: she poured the carrot seeds with hot (45-50 °) water. This washes away essential oils that prevent them from germinating. During the day, the water was changed several times, adding cold water. And in the late afternoon, she dried the seeds to flowability and sowed them immediately.
I watered the beds in advance and made grooves with the edge of the board. The sown seeds were sprinkled on top with a mixture of peat and sand and slightly compacted. Amicable shoots appeared after 5 days. But the final results were summed up in the fall. The root crops turned out to be smooth, sweet and juicy, they did not outgrow, as often happens with earlier crops, and were well kept.
Another thing is that carrots of late sowing dates need very careful protection from carrot flies. It is not for nothing that agronomists recommend sowing this crop as early as possible: larger, stronger and hardened root crops are better protected from voracious larvae. Females lay eggs from the time of flowering of the apple tree until the end of June. You can scare them away by using pungent-smelling infusions for watering and spraying plantings.
G. Starodubtseva from the Tver region took a simpler path. It isolates carrots from pests from the moment the seeds are sown. She sticks several sticks along the edges of the garden bed and in the center, sets plastic bottles on them with their bottoms upside down and covers everything with a non-woven material with a density of 17 g / sq. m. The rounded bottoms of the bottles do not tear or spoil it. The material hangs over the bed almost horizontally, which means that it does not need to be removed for watering, only for weeding. And the plants under such a mini-greenhouse develop better.
