Cultivation and proper storage of Chinese cabbage (until the New Year)

BEIJING - LANDING AND CARE
Peking cabbage has become so entrenched in the menu of most of us that it seems as if it was always present on our table. It is especially good in salads - it adds juiciness and crunchiness to them.
Many gardeners began to cultivate it on their plots, limiting themselves, however, to only the summer consumption of this vegetable. Meanwhile, it is quite possible not only to grow Peking, but also to preserve it, at least until the New Year.

BEIJING CABBAGE: TERMS AND VARIETIES
To get heads of cabbage for long-term storage, you need to sow the seeds of Chinese cabbage in the summer: from mid-July to early August. In this case, only medium-late and late varieties should be chosen. Often the words “for storage” are written on the bags with such seed.
The glass is one of the most famous late varieties. Fruit weight reaches 2,5 kg. Ripening occurs 70 days after planting. The Monument variety has the same growing season, but its heads of cabbage are more weighty: they reach a mass of 3,5 kg. They are another 0,5 kg heavier in the Russian size variety. Of the late hybrids, the fruits of which can be well stored, it is worth noting Nika (weight 3 kg) and Turquoise (4 kg). Interestingly, the heads of these plants can even be fermented!
Council
Sowing late varieties earlier than the second half of July is impractical. Like most cabbage (formerly called cruciferous) crops, Pekingka, with a daylight of more than 12 hours, releases a flower arrow and does not form heads of cabbage.
SEEDING BEIJING CABBAGE
In summer, it is best to grow Chinese cabbage in a seedless way, since there are usually no unfavorable factors for the development of young plants.
For sowing in open ground, you should prepare a bed. For her, they choose a place illuminated by the sun and closed from the winds. The soil should be light, and loams with a high humus content are most suitable.
Note
The best predecessors of Peking cabbage are potatoes, cucumbers, carrots, onions, legumes (including green manure crops - alfalfa, lupine, vetch} crops. Plants of the cabbage family are not suitable as soil “enrichments”: mustard, rapeseed, oil radish and rape. vegetable crops from this "surname" are also not suitable: all types of cabbage, radish, turnip, radish, horseradish, watercress.
The soil should be carefully dug up, shed for disinfection with a pink solution of potassium permanganate. Of organic fertilizers, compost is most suitable (bucket per 1 sq. M).
Of the minerals - superphosphate, ammonium and potassium nitrate (all in 1 tbsp. L. On the same area). It is also useful to add a little sifted wood ash (a half-liter jar per 1 sq. M), which will provide additional nutrition and protection from pests. Further, in the process of plant growth and development, it is better not to apply fertilizers, since Peking has the ability to intensively accumulate nitrates.
Sowing is done with dry seeds in holes to a depth of 1-2 cm.
They are covered with soil and watered abundantly. It is best not to spare the seed, put 2-3 seeds in each hole, and after sprouting, pinch the weak shoots, leaving one - the strongest.
BEIJING - CARE
For any cabbage, it is very important to ensure regular watering, not allowing the soil to dry out. Peking is no exception - for it, the optimal soil moisture indicator is 65%. This parameter at moderate temperatures (15-22 degrees) is achieved by weekly watering with warm water at the rate of 10 liters per 1 sq. m landings. If the weather is sultry, which often happens in July-August, then it is advisable to irrigate Peking every day, and the best option is sprinkling. It should be remembered that irregular, and even excessively abundant watering, as well as stagnant water in the garden, provokes cracking of the heads of cabbage, which lose their ability to be stored for a long time. The development of dangerous fungal diseases on plants, especially various types of rot, is also possible.
STORING PEEKING CABBAGE
Heads of cabbage intended for long-term storage are removed from the ground along with their roots. They do this depending on the climate of a particular region at different times: from mid-September to the end of October. The main thing is to have time to harvest the crop before the first freeze. Otherwise, rot in storage is inevitable.
Having selected healthy, well-formed forks, their roots are placed in wet sand, which is poured into a box. In the cellar or basement, where Beijing cabbage is sent for storage, it is necessary to maintain the temperature in the range from 3 degrees Celsius to 0, as well as high (95%) humidity.
But since it is very difficult to create such conditions, and even more so to constantly maintain it, it is allowed to use another method that ensures the keeping quality of the Peking heads for 3 months. To do this, the heads of cabbage are hermetically wrapped in food to avoid moisture loss.
Frequent watering leads to the exposure of the surface roots of Peking cabbage, so periodically the plants need to be spud. the film and laid horizontally in a box in no more than 3 layers. The cabbage should be inspected every two weeks. If any forks are damaged, it is best to use such heads for food, removing problem areas. However, further storage of heads of cabbage with cut top leaves is allowed if they are wrapped with new cling film.
