Caring for black currants after picking berries

HARVED BERRIES? GIVE CURRANT CARE!
Do not leave currants unattended after harvest. It is during this period that the plant begins a period of active growth. And the harvest of the next year depends on the proper care of the fertile shrubs.
AFTER HARVESTING CURRANT CUTTING
At this time, the berry culture directs all its forces to the growth of the root system, leaves and new shoots. What is required of us at this time?
First of all, this is, of course, cropping. It doesn't matter what kind of currant you grow: red, white or black. Bushes of all varieties must be pruned, removing all damaged, dry and diseased branches, as well as excess shoots that shade the bush.
It is best to use pruning shears for this purpose, which should be sharp.
First, cut off diseased, damaged and old thick shoots (they are brown, with a bloom) that will not bloom next year. Also cut out any excess root shoots inside the bush (they only thicken it) and branches that are too low lying on the ground. Shorten powerful annual shoots by 5-8 cm.
DIGGING
After that, we move on to cultivating the soil around the bush. It needs to be dug up (but carefully so as not to damage the root system), water and mulch. I use sawdust as mulch. But this is already a matter of personal preference of each gardener, which is based on knowledge of the composition of the soil, so everything is individual. Mulching, in my opinion, is imperative, it will help to save the root collar from early frosts.
Fertilizing the currants after picking berries
Simultaneously with the digging, we fertilize the currants, because by the end of summer the soil had already given up the entire supply of nutrients. Use potassium-phosphorus fertilizers for this, and leave the organic matter for the spring. I mix 1 tbsp each in a bucket of water. l. superphosphate and potassium sulfate.
Some summer residents confuse caring for currants after harvesting with the autumn preparation of bushes for the winter period. But it's too early for this event. Rather, this stage can be considered the beginning of the preparation of currants for winter. And in no case is it recommended to skip it. The plant must have time to accumulate nutrients before long hibernation.
Tips
Be sure to take a closer look at the branches and leaves of the currant, suddenly the bush is infected with pests, but even if they are not there, for prevention it is recommended to spray the bush with 1% Bordeaux liquid a couple of times before winter.
To reduce the amount of treatments required, grow varieties that are resistant to diseases and pests. For example, black currant Vernissage, Emerald necklace, red - Ural beauty, Red Dutch, white - Imperial yellow or Pink pearls.

NOTE: CURRANT BERRIES SHOULD BE STARCHED
In the spring of this year, I found in my kitchen cabinet with spices potato starch, which had expired for as long as a year (it is needed once every five years, that's why it has been forgotten for so long).
I decided not to throw it away, but to try to attach it in the country: after all, potato peelings are added around the currant bushes as a top dressing. She scattered starch around the black currant bushes, dug up the ground and poured water on it. A couple of weeks later I repeated my feeding. I can say that the berries have grown much sweeter than usual.

On black currants, in July, the leaves turned yellow and began to fall off. Why?
#
- The first sign of early yellowing of the leaves is a lack of moisture in the soil, so in hot summers it is important to water and feed the currant bushes.
The second reason is the "work" of gall aphids, small pests (they live in whole colonies on the underside of the leaves). Aphids pierce the vessels of the leaves and draw out nourishing sap from them. As a result, the leaf blade is deformed and covered with swellings of a reddish or yellowish color, which after a while darken, and the leaves turn yellow and fall off prematurely. Control measures
Remove badly damaged leaves and cut off deformed young shoots.
Use insecticides against gall aphids - at the time of flowering currants (when the buds are blooming), after flowering and after harvesting (Inta-Vir, Aktara, Iskra, Tanrek, Aktellik, Commander).
If there are few aphids, you can try folk remedies: infusion of onion husks (pour 200 g of husk into 1 liter of water, insist for a day), infusion of ash (1 tablespoon per 1 liter of water), tobacco infusion (400-800 g of makhorka or tobacco dust pour 10 liters of water, leave for a day, add 100 g of laundry soap).
