Blackberry varieties - reviews + convenient breeding method (Samara region)
7 WONDERFUL BLACKBERRY VARIETIES
For some reason they rarely write about blackberries, but they are good for everyone - they are both tasty and healthy. Thorns? So they both have roses and gooseberries. In addition, there are more than enough varieties that are completely devoid of thorns.
The very first - Thornfrey - we got from the previous owners. It is a widespread variety, thornless, of medium ripening. Very productive with large berries. At first, they are sour (if not yet ripe), but when they become slightly dull and fall into the palm of their hand, then delicious! We remove them and cook jam with mulberry and chokeberry. The jam is wonderful. The berries begin to ripen in the first half of August and delight right up to frost.
Second grade - Triple crown. It is a powerful bush with thick, thornless branches. The berries are round, very large. Often there are two or three fused together. Our guests round their eyes in surprise - such huge berries! Fruiting is abundant, but extended. It happens that on some branches the berries are already ripe, while on others there are only flowers.
The third grade is Chachanska Bestrna, similar to Thornfrey. Also thornless and medium-ripening. Fruiting is abundant, the berries are slightly sour, slightly finer than those of Thornfrey.

The fourth grade is Natchez. A thornless, powerful shrub of early maturity. The berries are huge, long (4-5 cm), very sweet. I read on the Internet that some complain about a bitter taste - we don't have it. Apparently, a lot depends on the soil. Yields at Nat-chaz are good. Begins to sing in mid-July, a whole month earlier than the previous three varieties.
The fifth grade is Karaka Black. Very early ripening, prickly. There are thorns on the branches, on the stepchildren, and on the leaves, but this drawback covers a lot of advantages. The variety is early, fruitful, the berries are elongated, large, sweet. Replacement shoots immediately spread along the ground, they do not need to be bent down when sheltering for the winter. In the spring I send them to the trellis and tie them. When harvesting, I put on a glove on one hand, and calmly ditch the berries with the other.
Sixth grade - Black satin. The bush is thornless, the berries are large, sweet with sourness. Helps along with Thornfree. Last winter, he suffered greatly from mice: either the husband forgot to put foam rubber soaked in birch tar under the shelter, or this bush turned out to be the most delicious for the mice. The shoots had to be cut off - let it rest for a year.
And the last variety - Brzezina, Polish selection. This is our newbie. As indicated on the accompanying postcard, it is early, fruitful, and thornless. The berries are sweet, elongated (conical), large, without bitterness. Well, wait and see.
All listed varieties are covering. Three to five replacement branches are thrown out over the summer, depending on the age and strength of the bush.
Blackberry care is not time consuming. In the spring we remove the shelter, tie it to a trellis or flower arch. Be sure to lay mulch under the bushes - straw, lawn grass. Over the summer, we feed it twice with infusions of mullein, chicken droppings and be sure to dust it with ash. You can scatter the ash over the mulch (it will fall into the ground the next time you water it), or you can rake the mulch to the side and then return it to its place after dusting it with ash. Diseases and pests, except for mice, are not observed.
BLACKBERRY BREEDING - A CONVENIENT WAY
Blackberries multiply in several ways. I like to root the tops of the shoots. I take an eggplant (1,5-2 l) and cut the top to the "shoulders". I make sure to make drainage holes. I fill up the nutritious soil and dig an eggplant next to the desired bush into the ground, and stick a peg near it. What for? And to bind the rooted branch. A gust of wind can pull it out of the eggplant, and then all the work is down the drain.
On the branch itself, I pinch the growth point and remove all the leaves from the part that will be in the ground. Everything. Now we are just waiting for the roots to appear and do not forget to water.
What is good, or rather, convenient, my method? At any time, you can carefully pull the eggplant out of the ground and check the root system.
When it becomes strong enough, you can cut the branch from the mother bush and plant it in the place you need or donate it. In this way, I propagated Cumberland black raspberries - very tasty, very sweet and very healthy. And we freeze the blackberries and then consume fresh vitamins all winter. I recommend everyone to plant it in their garden, for sure you will fall in love with it.
And a little advice on another topic. For many years, with recurrent frosts in the spring, we light ordinary household candles in the greenhouse: 5-7 pieces for an eight-meter greenhouse. We put them in glass mustard jars and place them on the paths. Alexander Kuzmich (my husband) lights them after 12 o'clock in the morning or closer to the morning. They burn for a long time, and even if it is -5 ° outside, the temperature in the greenhouse does not drop below 0 ° or 1 °. Tomatoes can withstand such a cold snap.
