Do-it-yourself paniculata hydrangea on a trunk

HORTENSIA ON THE STAMP - LIKE A TREE
In the landscape, such trees are relevant as accent plants along a set and alleyways, next to a bench or a gazebo (decrees on the formation of standard hydrangeas and their care are shared by Olga Manudina, a collector from the city of Lukhovitsy, Moscow Region.
- Such beauties have been growing in my garden for many years. To obtain them, you do not need to resort to a complex grafting operation, as is the case with other crops, when a varietal stalk or bud is grafted onto the finished stem (stock) of an ordinary species plant. A hydrangea on a stem has a stem, a "cap", and a root system of the same variety - the one you choose yourself.
You just need to learn how to root the cuttings.
COUNCIL
And if you do not want to either cuttings or wait long, you can speed up the process by looking for a two-year-old seedling cuttings on sale in early spring. From an adult hydrangea or a very large seedling; it is difficult to get a standard specimen, since they are most often already formed as a bush will constantly give out shoots from the root.
HORTENSIA ON THE STAMP: STAGES OF WORK
I choose quiet secluded places under the cover of buildings, large trees or conifers with diffused penumbra.
A stalk grown up to two years of age is planted in a loose mixture of garden soil with humus, high peat and pine litter - 2: 2: 2: 1-1, 5, adding a handful of complex mineral fertilizer and superphosphate. I water it regularly.
When the plant gives out the first strong shoot from the root (this can take 1-2 years), I tie it to a peg (support is required!) And grow it to the desired height. Empirically, I came to the conclusion that for the formation of a hydrangea trunk it is optimal to start from 60-80 cm (then the trunk will gradually get fat and go uphill).
It is subsequently difficult to care for initially taller specimens and cannot be reached before their inflorescences. In addition, overgrown thin boles have a high risk of breaking from wind and rain (so I have already lost one adult specimen).
As soon as the seedling gains the desired height, I pinch it (in the first half of summer). After that (usually in the same autumn), the stem gives out new shoots from the upper pair of buds, the so-called slingshot - the future crown. In rare cases, they appear in the spring.
SECRETS OF CARING FOR STAMP HORTENSE
No additional shelter for the winter of a standard hydrangea (even a first year), as well as bush specimens, is required in the middle lane. Usually I water the trees in the absence of rain once a week for 10-20 liters.
I feed in the spring with ammonium nitrate (1 tablespoon / 10 liters of water) and mulch with well-rotted manure; in summer - complex fertilizer - Fertika-Universal-, alternating with humates (according to the instructions) or infusion of chicken manure.
BTW
Once, as a result of my experiments, a unique specimen was obtained - two stems of different heights from one root system.
I felt sorry to remove the "extra" trunk, which is why the hydrangea only won: now it blooms on two levels, but the "head" looks more powerful and spectacular.
GROWING AND CARE OF HYDROANGIA PANICULATE - ADVICE AND FEEDBACK
GARDEN DECORATION - Paniculata Hydrangea
I want to plant a paniculate hydrangea in the garden. Please tell me how to do it correctly to avoid mistakes? And also orient: what varieties are the easiest to care for and grow?
Anna Vasilievna REDKOVA, Kostroma
SELECTION OF SEEDLING
Most often, our gardeners plant the white-flowered hydrangea Grandiflora, the large-flowered Limelight and the late-flowering compact shrub Vanilla Fraze. If you want to enjoy the beauty of early flowering, give preference to the winter-hardy white-flowered variety Kyushu. If you have a small garden plot, you can recommend dwarf forms of Bobo hydrangea with pale pink inflorescences, Brussels Leys and others.
When purchasing seedlings, be sure to carefully inspect the root system - it must be well developed and healthy.
SITE PREPARATION
You should know that such shrubs will grow best on the east side, where the plant will not be annoyed by gusty winds. Hydrangea feels comfortable on well-fertilized loamy soil with high acidity. Look for a place on the site where there is no stagnant water. Hydrangea does not like waterlogging of the soil. For landing, a pit with a diameter of 50 and a depth of at least 40 cm should be prepared. A drainage layer should be poured into it. If the soil is clayey, it must be mixed with sand, add peat and earth from under coniferous trees.
The shrub will be even happier if a soil mixture is prepared for it based on humus, garden black soil, peat and sand, mixed in a ratio of 2:2:1:1. This composition must be enriched with 1,5 tbsp. l. urea, 2 tbsp. l. potassium sulfate and 60-70 g of superphosphate.
LANDING HYDRANIA paniculata
After that, you can start planting the plant. First straighten the roots of the seedling, place it in the center of the hole and sprinkle with soil so that the root collar remains on the surface of the soil. Pack the soil and water the hydrangea with a bucket of water. To keep moisture in the soil longer, mulch the surface with cut grass, peat or coniferous needles with a layer of 4-7 cm. Be sure to remove the mulch in spring.
Caring for an ornamental shrub is necessary, because without your active participation in its life it will be impossible to achieve the beauty of flowering that you are counting on.
Council
If you purchased a seedling in a container, then you can plant such a hydrangea without waiting for autumn, but at any time during the summer, the main thing is that the bark and buds of the hydrangea with a closed root system are not damaged, and live roots peek out from the earthy coma.
TREE HYDRANGEA ON A STAMP: MYTH OR REALITY?
I have a tree hydrangea bush growing. Is it possible to form a standard tree from it?
— Theoretically, yes, if you graft it onto another species. But in practice I have not seen such instances. Without grafting, it will not be possible to grow a shrub on a trunk, because it is genetically prone to a branched bush form due to the growth of strong young shoots that come from the root. This is the beauty of it.
If you want the shrub to maintain a compact shape, prune it annually in the fall (in November, when the foliage falls, but the temperature is still above zero during the day), first removing broken branches, then old ones (light brown in color with many branches) and young unripe ones ( thin, greenish in color, easily broken off by hand). Shorten young mature shoots of red-brown color by half or 2/3. So next year you will get a lush plant with many large inflorescences.
If you still want to have a beautiful standard hydrangea, I recommend Hydrangea paniculata. Among the varieties, choose specimens with strong main shoots and moderately lush, light inflorescences (Grandiflora, Summer love. Limelight, Candlelight).
Plant a young bush in the spring and let it grow good roots in the first year. Tie the stem to the support as it grows so that it is straight. In the second season, trim off all young shoots coming from the trunk. You can form a trunk 70-90 cm high by cutting it off in the 2-3rd year. From the 4-5 buds located below, let skeletal branches develop, which in the spring shorten by 2 internodes. At the same time, remove small shoots and shoots growing inside the crown.
A lesser-known species is also suitable for such experiments. Brettschneider hydrangea, reaching a height of 4 m and blooming in June. It can be formed from a young plant or an already mature bush, because it maintains a beautiful spreading shape with minimal pruning.
1. Deepen the support of the stem into the ground. 2. Organic mulching.
3. A strong stake made of metal or wood. 4. Strengthening the trunk on the support. 6. Autumn pruning.
6.Pruning next spring.

I bought several varieties of hydrangea paniculata in pots. Is it possible to plant them now in open ground?
#
- If your region is now hot and dry, then the transplantation of any plants, not only hydrangeas, should be postponed until the air temperature drops to at least + 20-25 degrees. In the heat, even the "old-timers" of the garden suffer, let alone the "kids" who must adapt to the microclimate of the site and spend their energy rooting in a new place.
If you live in a private house, then dig in the purchased specimens in the shade along with the containers. So the soil in the pots will dry out less. Be sure to mulch the soil.
If you spend more time in the apartment, do not take hydrangeas to the country. Keep under control at home - on the windowsill, balcony or loggia - in a semi-shady place. Since the root ball, most likely, completely occupies the volume of the pot, the seedlings need to be watered daily.
You can plant plants in open ground in cool cloudy (even rainy) weather, preferably in the evening.

Paniculata hydrangea has been sitting on my garden plot for three years now. But I did not experience the joy of her presence.
The plant is naughty all the time.
I would like to know about the possible problems of these ornamental shrubs.
#
Hydrangeas can have many problems. And a lot depends not only on the chosen place, but also on care. If, for example, the plant withered, it means that it lacks moisture. Sometimes this happens due to too high air temperature in summer.
Old yellowed leaves will indicate waterlogging of the soil, and young ones will indicate the hardness of the water that the hydrangea was watered with. This plant will gladly feel a surge of strength after moistening with moderately soft water.
If the bush has a different color of inflorescences, most likely, the acidity of the soil has also changed.
Burnt hydrangea inflorescences are a sure sign that the plant can hardly tolerate the abundance of the sun. This means that the bush will have to be shaded, especially on a scorching afternoon.
Does it upset you that hydrangea grows very slowly? Most likely, the wrong place was chosen for it. Perhaps the plant is in the shade all day, so it lacks sunlight.
