WE GROW DECORATIVE CABBAGE IN ... A FLOWER
Ornamental cabbage - beauty and benefits in one plant! She adorns many European parks. At the dacha, curly cabbage or BRASSICA (as this plant is also called) it will look best not in the garden, but in a properly designed flower garden.
A lush leaf rosette retains its decorative effect from mid-summer until severe frosts - ornamental cabbage can withstand frosts down to -12 ° C. The color palette of wide kale leaves ranges from pale yellow to purple and burgundy.
This original plant will make a harmonious composition in a group planting with garden flowers and other varieties of brassica. Ornamental cabbage will look no less impressive alone. It is great for decorating borders, and its smaller varieties will look great in garden pots and hanging planters.
SECRETS OF GROWING BRASSIC
In the open field, ornamental cabbage is best grown by seedlings. Disinfect the seeds before planting in a peat pot in a 1% solution of potassium permanganate. For seedlings, sod land and river sand are mixed in equal proportions, and then ash is added (for deoxidation).
It is preferable to sow pre-moistened seeds for future seedlings in March or early April, deepening them by a centimeter. Seeds usually hatch after 5 days. They need to be watered as the soil dries. "Babies" need a long-term (up to 15 hours a day) illuminated place, the air temperature in which is from 12 to 15 ° C. In a warmer environment, the seedlings can get under way too much s growth.
After the appearance of two true leaves, it is time to make a dive, burying young plants into the ground up to the cotyledonous leaves. As they grow, you need to sprinkle them with earth. In open ground (in loamy or sandy loam soil), brassica is planted in May - when return frosts are no longer expected. 6 holes for planting are placed on a handful of humus, wood ash and mineral dressing for cruciferous plants.
From the strong sun and pests, the planting is covered with a film or non-woven material. They spud cabbage 2-3 times per season. You also need to periodically weed and loosen the soil near it. From June and throughout the growing season, it is advisable to feed ornamental cabbage with mullein infusion. To resist the black leg and other diseases of the brassica will help feeding from 10 g of ammonium nitrate, 20 g of superphosphate, 10 g of calcium chloride per 3 liters of ox.

VARIETIES AND COMBINATIONS OF DECORATIVE CABBAGE WITH FLOWERS
Ornamental cabbage varieties are very diverse and differ in bright, often rare color, as well as in the shape of the leaves, the size of the plants and their height. The most popular varieties in Russia are "Nagoya White", distinguished by large leaves, openwork along the edge. The variety "Peacock" is also beautiful with a pink center, dark purple openwork leaves.
Variety "Heron" during the flowering period is similar to the buds of white, pink, red and even two-color roses.
Aesthetic and hardy milky-pinkish "Pigeon" Victoria ", bred by Japanese breeders. To preserve the decorative effect of cabbage, it is better not to fertilize the soil where it grows with manure. Plants will be larger, but the multi-colored palette will fade - green will prevail.
Kale blooms from July to late October, but its decorative effect appears in early autumn. Therefore, brassica is harmoniously combined on the flower beds with "Octybrinks" - New England and New Belgian asters. With the onset of frost, you can cut the cabbage leaves and put them at home.

I sow the seeds of ornamental cabbage in early April immediately in separate pots (you can sow them in the garden under a film in mid-April). I plant seedlings in open ground in mid-May-early June with a large clod of earth and water abundantly.
I choose a sunny place for ornamental cabbage: in good light, it builds up squat rosettes, and immediately stretches out in shade and partial shade.
TIP: To protect ornamental cabbage from caterpillars, I water the plantings with saline a couple of times over the summer (1 tablespoon of salt per bucket of water).
