CULTIVATION OF JAPANESE BAGGER IN MOSCOW REGION - MY ADVICE AND FEEDBACK
Once I saw a photo of Japanese scarlet in the catalog, I set myself on fire with the goal of definitely planting it on my site near Moscow. There was not much information about this tree, but I remember the lines that its leaves smell like gingerbread and caramel. I really wanted to breathe in the gingerbread aroma!
The Latin name for scarlet is Cercidiphyllum japonicum.
In Germany, it is called the gingerbread tree due to the scent that autumn leaves exude. At my request, a two-year-old sapling was bought and brought by my acquaintances, it was the last one in the store, and at first I was upset, since I would not have chosen such a plant myself - it was frail and broken. Before planting, I had to trim it, slightly cutting it off. I took the place for the gingerbread tree to the sunniest and most open (I read such a recommendation somewhere).
In the first year, the crown growth was insignificant, apparently, the plant, as expected, grew roots. But then for a couple of years there was freezing of the growths, so I decided to transplant the crimson tree in the forest part of the site, besides, by this time I came across another recommendation - to plant a gingerbread tree in partial shade. The new location is protected from winds and there is no risk of sunburn to the bark. The scarlet leaves have become a little smaller, but he quickly recovered, annually gives an increase of 30-35 centimeters, and the ends of the branches no longer freeze.

TIPS ARE FREQUENTLY MEETED on how to form a gingerbread tree in the form of a bush with a height of 2-2, 5 m.To do this, it is recommended to annually shorten all the shoots, first by 10-15 cm, and then,
The bloom of scarlet in the Moscow region is short and inconspicuous, there is no point in waiting for it, but the autumn color of the foliage is breathtaking! when the plant reaches the desired height, simply keep it growing at that level by cutting regularly. Whether such a scheme really works, I cannot say, I did not dare to apply it. But once I saw a scarlet nickname in the Baltics. At the bottom, the trunk of the tree was quite thick, and the crown itself is neat and small, it turns out that it can still be formed.
I also heard that some owners of the purple tree tie branches near the tree for the winter so that they do not break from the snow. I never did that either. In my opinion, the branches of the scarlet are quite flexible and thin, they do not even suffer from freezing rain. And, frankly, I can't imagine how you can pull off branches on an adult tree 5-6 m tall?
I CAN ABSOLUTELY EXACTLY say that the gingerbread tree does not like dryness. A young plant must be watered without fail, and an adult can suffer from drought. This year she made a mistake, and in the summer the leaves on the tree began to fade, but after watering everything was restored.
THE LEAVES OF THE BEAM ROOM with a diameter of 5-8 cm, green above with a bluish tint, gray below, and the young foliage is very bright purple-pinkish. But the finest hour of the gingerbread tree comes with the onset of autumn. The autumn color of crimson is a separate song. In a golden-orange-pink dress, more and more saturated maroon color begins to appear. Unfortunately,
foliage stays on the tree until the first severe frost, and then completely flies around in an instant
HEARING THE FIRST TIME OF THE SMELL OF HANDBOOK, I thought that the neighbor, in anticipation of the grandchildren, decided to bake cookies. But then she pulled herself together, because she had been in the city for a long time. Crimson leaves only smell dry or badly beaten by frost, and even if they are already on the ground. Smell, spicy, something from childhood: burnt sugar, caramel, butter biscuits The aroma spreads through the garden and is felt even from a distance. Once I wanted to preserve this smell, surprise my sister, who was supposed to come for the New Year. I collected an armful of dry leaves, stuffed them into a thick canvas bag, and forgot about them. I found it only in the spring - the leaves crumbled, but the smell, albeit weak, remained.
The scarlet plant has been growing for me for the fourth year already, during this time I have never been ill with anything, I have not noticed any pests on it either. Nevertheless, I will not call on all gardeners to have a gingerbread tree.
Still, it is not suitable for every site - an adult plant is not only tall, but also quite voluminous, with long branches directed to the sides. Finding a place in the garden that would be to the liking of the purple is also a problem. I think it's not for nothing that its name says "Japanese". The climate of Japan is maritime, the air humidity is high, such conditions cannot be created in the garden.
That same year, when I planted my scarlet tree, a friend who lives practically next door also bought a gingerbread tree. Its plant regularly freezes, often to the level of snow, leaves are devoid of aroma. True, she bought a Polish seedling, and mine was purchased at the Botanical Garden of Moscow State University.
NOW I HAVE A NEW DREAM - I want to plant a weeping Japanese scarlet in the garden. The plant is capricious, but I hope I can handle it, because I already have some experience.
