WATER-CHARGING IRRIGATION - the pros and cons, why is it needed - advice from the candidate of agricultural sciences
WATER-CHARGING IRRIGATION: BENEFIT OR HARMFUL?

Moisture-charging irrigation ... It seems that everything is clear and understandable here, but until now there are fierce debates whether it is necessary, whether we will harm the plants by flooding the soil before frost. Let's figure it out.
In the southern regions you will have to wait a long time for frosts, usually before November you will not wait for them, and all this is combined with often very dry autumn: sometimes even a drop of rain does not fall in three autumn months. What to do? Here, naturally, water-charging irrigation is necessary. Of course, one cannot say that this is a free pleasure. Alas, no: you will have to pay for water, and a lot, because you need to pour it out enough to be able to wet the soil to a depth of up to a meter, otherwise there will be no sense from such watering.
In this case, the benefits are obvious: the soil is dry, the plants are depleted, and we help them. There is also a minus - moist soil can draw heat from the depths of the soil, it can even wake up plants.
But this minus is more than covered by a huge plus - moist soil cannot freeze to a great depth, because it has a significant heat capacity, such soil will simply freeze from above, and the roots will not suffer for sure, even if it is cold and little snow falls.
Moisture-charging watering will also help in the spring. There is another misfortune: as soon as the sun warms up the crown, the roots begin to work, absorb moisture from the soil, and if it is there, then this is very good, and if not, then the plant may suffer greatly.
How does water recharge irrigation work? It, like a thermos, does not allow the soil to warm up ahead of time, the roots remain dormant, but when real warmth comes, then moisture will only benefit.
It follows that such a procedure is needed in any region, even in the north, even in the south, and of course in the center, too.
And who is the real water lover? Most of all, stone fruits, especially cherries, peaches, nectarines, and apricots, need water-charging irrigation in autumn. They adore abundant watering of pears, but the apple tree somehow does not particularly favor it, and if modern new varieties, and even on dwarf rootstocks, are worth watering, then old varieties, such as Antonovka or white filling, can not be touched at all, let yourself sleep until spring and have good summer dreams.
ATTENTION!
Before grabbing buckets or throwing a hose under a tree and forgetting about it for hours, you need to assess the state of your soil right now. Try to gently dig a hole; you don't need a very large one, just a couple of bayonets will be enough for a shovel. Now remove the soil from the bottom and try to roll it into a lump. Happened? This means that your soil has enough moisture and does not need to be watered heavily. And if there is obvious dampness, then you can do without watering at all.

In August-September, during the period of fruit ripening, limit watering. In general, fruit trees need to be watered rarely, but accurately, deeply soaking the root zone (at least 30 cm). Timely watering makes the pouring fruits larger, reduces the shedding of the crop, and maintains the viability of the tree. During periods of prolonged heat and drought, one or two plentiful waterings are usually sufficient.
Don't overdo it! With an excess of moisture, the roots do not have enough air in the soil, the growth and ripening of shoots slows down, cracks appear on the fruits of varieties prone to cracking.
BY THE WAY: WATERING THE APPLE TREE SHOULD NOT BE SPINLED AS IT INCREASES THE RISK OF DEVELOPING FUNGI DISEASES (MONILIOSIS, SCAB, POWDER DEW).
