CABBAGE IN A NON-CAPESTIC YEAR
Purchased cabbage seedlings are always a lottery. It is sold, as a rule, in two varieties - early and late. Therefore, those who want to get a guaranteed harvest, either take seedlings in proven places, or grow them themselves, choosing the right varieties.
I have been growing cabbage for many years.
There were various problems, but they never remained without a crop. Several times I came across poor seed germination. Now I insure myself: I take a small jar (containers in which maggots are sold are convenient), put a wet cotton pad on the bottom, and 10 seeds on it. I keep it on the top shelf of a kitchen cabinet. It's the warmest place. On the 3-4th day, high-quality seeds are pecked. It is so easy to determine the percentage of germination: 10 seeds is 100%.
Sowing is carried out in the third decade of March. When the plants give 1-2 nd true leaves, I dive them into separate pots. At the beginning of April, I transfer the cabbage to the greenhouse. It's still cold, so I'm making a temporary greenhouse over the garden. I cover it with a non-woven material with a density of 60. I water it as needed. Cabbage lives in the greenhouse until the May holidays. Previously, ants settled in pots and ate the roots, the plants wither. Now I fill the earth around the pots with diatomite - it helps.
IN THE BEGINNING OF MAY, I plant the grown seedlings in the garden. I have been preparing it since the fall. I remove the top layer from there, 4-5 buckets of earth. I fill the holes in the lawn with it. I dig up the rest and add dolomite flour or superphosphate. In the spring I add 4-5 buckets of compost to this bed and dig everything up again. Cabbage loves fertile soil.
I put full mineral fertilizer and ash in the holes. I plant seedlings and sprinkle the ground at the base with ash - from slugs and cabbage flies. On top I put a 5-liter eggplant without a bottom and a lid. I put arcs over the bed and cover it with agrofibre, press it with boards around the perimeter. When the seedlings grow, I take off the bottles, and the non-woven material remains for almost the entire season. It protects against cabbage and cruciferous fleas. I even water without removing the shelter. I weed as needed.
So the cabbage grows until mid-June. In the summer, once every two weeks, I feed it with an infusion of nettle and dandelions. Plants like it. At the beginning of tying heads of cabbage, I give top dressing with a full mineral fertilizer with trace elements, and during their formation - an extract from superphosphate. After 2 weeks I water it with ash infusion. I remove the covering material when the cabbage begins to burst it with its leaves.

VARIETIES OF CABBAGE FOR TAMBOV REGION - MY REVIEWS
FOR SEVERAL YEARS I have tested different varieties of cabbage. From the earliest I tried June, F1 hybrids Explosion, Kazachok, Parel, Start, Transfer, Express. I did not notice much difference between them in terms of ripening, size and taste. All early, hassle-free, juicy. But in terms of resistance to cracking when overripe, F1 Parel and F1 Kazachok are more popular. I take off the harvest from the end of June to mid-July, my wife cooks borsch and cabbage soup in the summer, makes hodgepodge and pies. Heads of cabbage grow small, looser than in later varieties. Weight is about 0-8 kg.
The wife considers mid-season Slava 1305 to be the best variety for pickling.
If not for this, I would have long ago given up growing it. She attracts butterflies like a magnet. Caterpillars turn leaves and heads of cabbage into a sieve. We have to use drugs with a.v. against them. diflubenzuron and cypermethrin.
I harvest Glory until August 15, if you stay a little longer, the heads of cabbage will crack. They are not stored for long, so you need to ferment quickly enough.
CABBAGE MIDDLE or LATE varieties vary greatly. I tried to grow both.
Mid-late varieties and hybrids, such as F1 Aggressor, F1 Brigadier, F1 Megaton, are harvested in the third decade of October.
F1 Aggressor is an unpretentious hybrid. He does not rot, does not get sick. There are almost no pests on it. Plants are relatively compact. Outer leaves are dense, with a bluish bloom. The heads of cabbage are small, very firm and well kept. But the leaves are tough and not the most delicious. It seems that the pests do not like this either.
F1 Megaton love most of all. He needs a lot of space, he likes to spread the leaves wider! I have been planting this hybrid for several years now. This year the heads of cabbage turned out to be small, weighing 3-6 kg, but dense. Usually they are larger - 6-8 kg, or even 10 kg. We store it in the basement and finish it by April. It is impossible to overexpose in the garden; it can crack. Or the lower leaves will move away from the stump. Then the heads of cabbage will be stored worse.
The foreman refused to grow the F1 hybrid. I don't like the high leg. Plants must be either heavily spud or bricked. The size of the heads of cabbage depends on the planting scheme. At 60 × 70 cm, they grow 3-4 kg in weight, and at 90 × 90 cm, they grow larger, up to 4-8 kg. It is better to eat the harvest before January-February, then it starts to deteriorate.
I remove the MIDDLE varieties after the first frost. At the root, they can withstand minus 5 °, and minus 10 ° is already a bit too much for them. If removed earlier, the cabbage will taste bitter and the taste will remain herbaceous. And after freezing, it crunches better.
LATE varieties have never cracked. I remove them, if the weather permits, at the end of October. Until this year, I knew that the most delicious late variety is Moscow late. Her leaves are huge. Bushes have to be planted less frequently. And the heads of cabbage grow very large, weighing 10 kg or more. This variety must be allowed to lie in the cellar to mature. We start eating it in early December. It is the leaves that become juicy and tasty. You can also ferment. But in general I am thinking of abandoning this variety - it is inconvenient to use large heads of cabbage. They are stored up to a maximum of March.
I plan to take F1 Valentina to replace him. The hybrid is late, lying, grows slowly in seedlings, and its leaves are not very large. Heads of cabbage are very dense, covered with a layer of bluish bloom. Under the knife they crack like a ripe watermelon. The size is convenient, 4-5 kg, the taste is excellent. My wife makes stuffed cabbage and salads from this cabbage. Heads of cabbage are stored perfectly. The last one I brought from the cellar in May. He was almost like from the garden.
Amager is a reliable variety, like a Kalashnikov assault rifle. Each year produces small heads of cabbage, hard as stone. They are completely inedible at first. Leaves are dry, tough. But I decided to let him lie down. What if it ripens? Ripe just in time for spring. We ate all the delicious cabbage, leaving Valentina and Amager. We tried to cut it. The head of cabbage became softer, the leaves became juicier and tastier. Now I plant a dozen heads of cabbage every year. Like the rest of the cabbage we eat - just Amager reaches it.
FROM EXOTIC I grow red cabbage. A little, only for salads and for fermentation, I tried to grow Mars MC and Faberge. There were few caterpillars on them, and the heads of cabbage did not burst from the rains.
The varieties are declared as early, but they sat in the garden until frost. The heads of cabbage are dense and heavy, they were stored well, but they were not suitable for salads. The leaves are too dry and rough. Their wife sours with white (50/50) cabbage. Red cabbage gives color, and white juice. together very tasty.
And for salads I grow red-headed Kalibos. Plants are medium-sized, loose heads of cabbage.
The largest one weighed about 2 kg. This is the best cabbage for salads. I plant several bushes along the path. It is not stored for long, but the site beautifies.

I do not plant early, but the middle varieties ripened earlier than the early ones and all cracked. Coming late. The forks are large, but I'm afraid they will also begin to crack. Apparently, a good harvest will not work either.
Color is even worse. I planted seeds in March, planted gorgeous seedlings in mid-April. I thought in May or early June to get the first harvest. But no! The heat came on, my cabbage began to wither and completely disappeared. Now there is only hope for late varieties, although they also do not shine with health. Only if September and October are cool, we will be able to please ourselves with cauliflower dishes. As long as there is hope.

White cabbage and cauliflower grew for a long time under covering material so that moisture does not evaporate much. In July, the covering material was removed. She sat motionless for a long time - only in August, when the heat subsided a little, she began to gain weight and surprised with rather weighty heads of cabbage. I love Slava.

This year the cabbage has grown glorious, and all because I start taking care of the harvest with the preparation of the seeds.
Before sowing, I held them for 2 hours in a pink solution of potassium permanganate (it is possible in Humate).
It formed holes at a distance of 5 cm from each other. I poured 1 tsp into each. with a slide of baking soda, 2 handfuls of humus, a pinch of wood ash, hydrated lime and ground chalk.
On April 5, she sowed cabbage seeds - 5-6 pieces in each hole. At the stage of 5-6 leaves, I left one sprout in the hole, the rest were planted.
Then she looked after the cabbage as usual: weeded it, watered it once a week. Three times she fed herbal mash (1:10): two weeks after transplantation; in July; in August.
