Figs from cuttings outdoors - my tips for planting and care

Figs in the dacha, or dreams come true
Changes are constantly taking place in the list of dacha exotics: some cultures drop out of it, others appear. Figs are still there firmly. But it would be high time to take a closer look at him!
All my life I really wanted to breed citrus fruits on the site, especially tangerines, lemon and figs. But no matter how many times I entered our gardening store, I could not find the seed. And, apparently, she was already so tired of her questions to the saleswomen that one of them, finally, in her hearts told me that I was wasting my time: they would not have citrus fruits on sale. Because these "toys" are very expensive and no one will buy them. In short, ordinary summer residents do not need all this. And I, it turns out, is not easy, or what?
But there was nothing to do, she began to wait for a chance. And he came! Once the son (the kingdom of heaven to him) suddenly took and brought from Akhtyrka a stalk from a fruiting tangerine. I was delighted, put the gift in a jar of water and placed it in the cellar so that he would release the roots there. And the shepherd pulled it off and nibbled it! Well what can you say? I began to study the files and this is what I noticed: some readers grow citrus fruits from seeds. Yes, they succeed. But at what cost!
After all, for example, lemon and tangerine in this case will begin to bear fruit only after ten years. And the figs? He's a little earlier.
But that doesn't change the matter. I didn’t want to go such a long way and decided to fulfill my dream at the end of my life. Without really understanding anything on the Internet, I asked my grandson at the end of this winter to order the best varieties of fig seedlings. He chose Strawberry Verte, Kadota, Brown Turkey and Dalmatian. Hooray! In the spring, the long-awaited package arrived. Hands shook when she opened it. And what did I get for a lot of money? Consumption twigs as thick as a pencil and 15-20 cm high.
Well, I’ll take care of these weak crumbs.

TRANSFERRING FIGS INTO OPEN GROUND
Afraid to even breathe on them, I put them in a container filled with fertile soil, watered them and put them on the south window. Every morning, barely waking up, I ran to the “children” and looked to see if the kidneys were waking up on them. And a week later this miracle happened (photo 1).
So, now we need to feed the seedlings with something. I decided not to use mineral water, so as not to accidentally burn the delicate roots. But she constantly watered the kids with green fertilizer from green wheat.
Where did you get the wheat? Yes, just every year in the offseason, I grow it in boxes. I give it to grow up to 10-15 cm, cut it off along the beam, pass it through a blender, dilute it with water and drink this "green" in the morning to strengthen the immune system. And then she began to pour the leftovers under the figs.
Step by step, the plants began to come to life. When they were completely strong, I planted them in the open ground in the spring. But not all, but only Strawberry, Kadotu and Brown Turkish. Where are you doing the fourth? More on this later. In the meantime, I will say that I did not add any fertilizers to the holes for the same reason - I was afraid to burn the roots.
But she generously introduced vermiculite there, because figs hate stagnant water.
Ask if the game was worth the candle? The answer is yes! And, looking ahead, I will say that it turns out that it is possible to grow figs in the open field in our latitudes. Only it must be covered for the winter. Moreover, in one article I even subtracted such a saying: wherever grapes grow, figs will also live. And this is very good - no need to transplant plants in the fall into buckets and drag them into the cellar.
Figs without pests
What I liked about that first year of growing figs was the complete absence of pests on the plants. But I met information that this culture is strongly affected by the spider mite. It turned out that this was not true. And I can prove it.
The fact is that I planted a seedling of the Dalmatsky variety in a greenhouse: I wanted to conduct an experiment and find out if the figs could survive the winter there without additional shelter? So, next to him grew cucumbers, which over time were attacked by a spider mite. And figs at least that! But that's not all. A whitefly started up in the greenhouse, which also did some business. And the figs again had nothing to do with it!
I was also surprised by the Brown Turkish, which managed to give the crop the very first (photo 2). Later, he had a second wave of growth (photo 3), and next to each leaf he again formed a fruit. Good guy! Yes, it was not for nothing that it was written on the Internet that farmers love this variety so much: the rest of my seedlings were unable to repeat the feat of their brother. Now it also became clear to me why in the homeland of this culture - in Asia Minor - they say: "He who grows figs will not die of hunger." And what is more, I will say: the price of figs on the market is generally prohibitive. So it turns out that growing it is profitable in any way. True, my neighbors are still laughing: they say, our Andreevna's roof has gone from old age, what has she thought of - to grow figs in the country! But nothing, we'll see who will be the last to laugh.
I, together with my family, ate my figs to the dump in July-August. At first, however, at first they ran to the toilet out of habit. But it was still worth it! It is simply impossible to refuse such a yummy that grows literally close by. It’s impossible to eat just a couple of things and stop. And in the markets we sold several types of figs: green, red and purple. The last one is the sweetest. But! For all that, you rarely see figs fresh in our area, and dried figs are not at all the same. At all!
Well, and a little more about why figs deserve to be grown in the country: they are very useful for health. Among other things, it is the best cough remedy. I take two or three ripe fruits (you can, of course, use dried ones), pour them in a glass of milk, put them on a slow fire, bring them to a boil and keep them in this state for exactly one minute. When the milk cools down, I drink it, and eat the figs. After two or three such procedures, the cough disappears completely.
NOTE: FIGS ON THE BALCONY, AT HOME
I want to share my experience of growing Royal figs at home. There are almost no difficulties here - just water on time and warm the flowerpot a little for the winter so that the roots do not freeze. This fig has been bearing fruit for me for ten years, and twice a season. For the winter, it sheds foliage and goes into suspended animation.
During this period, watering should be limited to a minimum so that the roots do not rot.
And my fig lives in a flowerpot on an unheated loggia. If the stems grow strongly, I partially shorten them, and put the resulting cuttings in a jar of water so that they take root. Moreover, this can be done almost at any time of the year. When the grown white roots reach a length of 1,5 cm, I transplant the cuttings into cut plastic bottles with earth. The survival rate is excellent: up to 5-10 seedlings per season are obtained. I give or distribute to those who wish, sometimes persistently, because my wife swears that I am growing a vegetable garden on the window again.
A couple of times I tried to plant and keep my figs in the country - I insulated it with agrofibre, made a frame, filling it with straw, but the upper part of the bush froze out anyway. I read that frost-resistant varieties have appeared, but I do not risk buying yet.
My main bush produces up to 30 berries per year. It is clear that you will not be satisfied with this, but you can pamper your grandchildren with exotic things. And just from the contemplation of a beautiful plant, we all get a lot of pleasure.

By the way
Fig (fig tree, fig tree) is the oldest fruit plant. Raising this southerner in the Middle Lane is not so difficult. This is best done in a greenhouse. In severe winters, the plant can be additionally insulated (but not with foil). Figs grow well in the house, giving a crop twice a year.
